It always stings when we lose a good one

1262

It always stings a bit when we lose a good one, and there appears to be universal agreement that Victor Wanyama is a good one, but there are compensations.  We lost him for the asking price (a club and Scottish record) and lost him early enough in the transfer window for the cash to be put to good use. Technical note, £12.5m and freeing up a very small wage will not provide £12.5m for transfers plus wages for either a £12.5m player or a collection of players at that value. It will free up a lesser transfer budget and provide a higher wage budget.

Victor goes with our best wishes.  He joins a club who signed Celtic fringe player (I’m being generous), Jos Hooiveld, two years ago, and who also employ former Celtic misfit, Danny Fox.  It’s not a sexy move but Victor will be as well compensated as Celtic by England’s bling.  There could be claims about the move being about football, but it’s about the money, honey; not that there’s a problem with that, Victor didn’t pack his bags in Nairobi hoping to end his days in Glasgow.

He only became a first choice player after Beram Kayal was injured so comprehensively by Elbows McCulloch and played less than 30 games and was a first team choice for less than a year before declining a contract extension for a substantial wage increase (several times the wages he was on).  This, when he had almost three years left on his existing deal.  There’s a lesson there for future negotiations.

If you are feeling less than happy about this development, I could suggest a reason or two.  Back in the 70s and 80s Macari, Hay, Dalglish, Nicholas and McClair were sold for competitive fees but the Cavalry of reinforcements didn’t arrive.  Instead Celtic hoped a new generation of youths would fill the gap.  Those of us from that generation were condition by the experience.

Things worked differently when Jock Brown was in charge (aye, you read right).  Within a few months we lost the league for the ninth consecutive season and sold the Three Amigos for a substantial amount of money.  In August 1997 I was distraught but 10 months later the penny dropped.  The challenge now for Peter Lawwell, Neil Lennon and the Celtic scouts is to outperform Jock and Wim………….

Easy, right?

  1. Hate to say it but after three years Lenny does not have a formation and still no capable central defence partnership .There is something tactically wrong with our coaching staff. The Cliftonville game is massive, not I feel only for our club, but also for our manager.

  2. First time poster so please go easy for the first few hours….

If we had played Arsenal, Dortmund and Real Madrid in pre season friendlies and beaten them all we’d have our hopes for this season way through the roof and be telling ourselves that this is the season we’ll earn the 2nd star above the badge. Pre-season is purely a fitness exercise to give players game time rather than the monotony of training. Also, had the players been going at 100 miles an hour and several got injured then again, we’d be criticising for allowing players to be playing like that a week or so before a game that actually means something. It’s never good as a Celtic fan to lose but lose we will. Usain Bolt doesn’t beat the world record every time he runs, he picks and chooses when to peak (Olympics or Grand Prix meets when there is more money and running means something to him). So everybody love everybody and have faith in the bigger picture.

How did the people of the Ardoyne fare last night? Did they have to endure what the oo term “their culture” forced down their throats?

  5. taranis,

Then you’d be completely wrong with your guess, I give new players the benefit of doubt, always, in my book they have two years to make their mark, one to settle and one to prove themselves. If they don’t get the opportunity of a regular place then I don’t judge, I do however judge those who criticise players who never got a chance to prove or fail to prove their worth, gobshites is the term I use, if you can fine any archive from this site since Sammi’s signing you’ll find very few of us actually gave the big ghuy credit for being a rare player.

So back to yer ‘I’d be surprised if they were not’

I’m currently trying to make money men stick to the terms of their contract and minimum standards, it’s no working, every shortcut and cost saving is being employed, amazing and ridiculous arguments are being used to justify why it’s no needed, a lot of these arguments I’ve heard at home not just here in Arabia, money is too important to some people, those people should never be allowed to dictate the rules or philosophy

Think you were depressed long before I came on the scene…LOL…you obviously have an anti-board agenda and you are trying to convert others to your thinking …… Thank God the vast majority of CQNers just love the Club, and are actually very pleased with our Board …… Oops, sorry, said the wrong thing …LOL ……a democracy is only a democracy when opposing views are respected……people like you who accuse delighted Celtic fans as “cowardly” defeat their own argument …… You should a politician….

  19. If the board have done nothing, then who gave all us fans who go and watch the team £100 off our season ticket?

Who has spent considerable money on making Celtic Park a better experience when attending?

Who has authorised work on a new museum/superstore?

Also, it is July ffs, plenty of time for a couple of new players.

The way things are shaping up, or are failing to shape up, Sammy could be invaluable in the CL qualifiers. Whilst I agree 100% that he is not a striker in the style of a stokes or watt, he has popped up for us in some big games in Europe. I feel we may be needing him next week.

  21. twists n turns on

Well bhoys, time I hit the shower and freshened up for our wee suaree. Happy punting, or happy whitever it is you’ll all be doing today. Just …….be happy……..

  22. Really don’t understand why we haven’t signed McFadden. There is talk of him going to Motherwell… if Motherwell can afford to pay him wages that he finds acceptable then there is no risk in bringing him in. At worst it’s another player for the left side (which besides Commons show is not a natural wide player) we have nobody for.

If he finds his form and keeps injury free then it would be a fantastic signing.

We need some creativity for Christ’s sake! He’s a free.

  23. Canamalar1

Pick a system, that suits the players you have, and stick with it.Tell me this, who will be playing in central defence in the next game, then tell me who will be playing in the next game after that, and so on.Three years and we still not got a recognised partnership in defence.A disgrace IMO.

  24. taranis,

    Eh ?

What’s the ‘back pages of the record’ ?

    You’ll need to enlighten me.

My club has many outlets and means to inform me of what is going on, THE BOARD, choose not to, it’s hardly my fault their communication skills are lacking.

  25. Robcfc, Welcome, i take your point. It depends whether you think we take more from these games having lost them or play weaker teams and run up cricket scores? Does that create false optimism & complacency, and so after losing 4 games will we have an edge about us or will we have lost significant confidence, only time will tell.

In terms of NL its hard to believe he doesn’t have an idea of budget, and different planning scenarios have been gone through. I’d hope that we are in a position to fill any gaps with suitable replacements.

  26. If we get £5m for Hooper I wouldn’t beat about the bush with a gamble on a non-goal-scoring striker and spend a big whack of it bringing in Charlie Austin.

Like for like replacement. We wouldn’t make much, if any profit but people are saying we should keep Hooper and let him go for nothing (hoping he helps us reach the CL group stage). Would rather replace him for a few years with a similar type.
