Janko, concentrate TV money on 6, not 42 clubs

1067

The assembly of Celtic-2015-16 continued apace yesterday with the arrival of Saidy Janko (19) from on a four year contract.  Saidy spent the second half of last season on loan to Bolton Wanderers, under Neil Lennon, in one of the game’s most bizarre transfers.

Manchester United were happy to allow Janko to go to Bolton in the winder transfer window but his absence would have left their U21 team short.  They needed a defender so Bolton offered Andy Kellett.  Kellett had only been in the field a total of 85 minutes in his Bolton career and had been farmed out to Portsmouth earlier in the season.  So it came as a surprise when Neil Lennon called to say “Pack your stuff, you’re going on loan to Manchester United”.

Saidy arrived in Manchester from Zurich as a 17-year-old right back but now plays all right-side positions.  There are things I like about this transfer: he’s been watched by the manager and scouts and was high on the wanted list. The success rate of players who have been well-scouted is vastly better than players who arrive after glowing references from respected names in the game, but where the Lennoxtown guys have only seen rare glimpses of the target.

It’s heartening to read glowing references from those who have watched him in England but references don’t mean he’ll make it at Celtic.

The use of New St Mirren Park by Celtic for a friendly game was not in itself controversial. Before being liquidated, Rangers used the same venue for youth games, and Celtic have often used Excelsior Stadium Airdrie for the same purpose.

But when photos emerged early yesterday of Celtic livery above the club shop, temporarily stocked with Celtic merchandise, it stirred something within St Mirren fans. They don’t mind their stadium being used by another club in return for cash, but for some, sensitivities need to be observed.

I can’t say I was remotely bothered by Commonwealth Games livery at Celtic Park last year, nor would I have raised an eyebrow to the Celtic Superstore being handed over for the sale of Commonwealth memorabilia, very few of us were. However, I have some sympathy for St Mirren fans. We were in a position of strength when we agreed to the Commonwealth deal, St Mirren have just been relegated and most fans expect their stay in the Championship to be more than a single season.

Yesterday’s livery was an indication of St Mirren’s place in the world, not so much a Celtic competitor, more a facilitator, who survived for years on a dividend from Celtic fans’ TV subscriptions.

Paisley is big enough to support a vibrant community club, but it’s too close to Glasgow to build an independently resourced competitor, they are not an Aberdeen, Dundee United, Dundee (maybe still), Hibs or Hearts. We have a handful of economically viable tier one football clubs and should nurture them accordingly, while aligning community clubs to focus on what should be their strengths.

Imagine, for a second, TV money concentrated on six clubs, not 42. These clubs would harvest the talent from a community feeder system and have the opportunity to build a sustainable businesses.

    Re BP Settlement

The judgement against BP allows for claims against lost business due to the spill.

So a restaurant shows that their revenues were down compared to the previous 5 years.

In goes a claim for the difference.

The boat captain who supplies the restaurant with fresh fish reports lost revenues.

    In goes a claim.

The waitress who had less hours and tips reports a drop in earnings.

In goes a claim for loss of earnings.

The guy who rents kayaks, boats and bikes does likewise, along with the deep sea fishing captain, his crew and fuel supplier.

And so the chain continues from property rental companies and hotels with double double dipping and of course large expense fees to the legal profession.

And all due to Pat and Mary from New Jersey deciding to cancel their Florida vacation and instead go to the Jersey Shore.

I was basking on a beach in Marathon during the spill and I can assure you not a speck of oil was seen and no damage was done to the reefs or beaches.

I was down the following year as well and the coast was thriving.

PP / Ladbrokes have military coup in the next 7 days — 7 / 4 on.

They are not going to let the “No” side win.

Just follow the money — no pun intended.

Who is paying for all the “Yes” adverts on Greek TV?

Beyond irony that a Greek airline is offering half price flights to get all the expats back in time. For the vote.

That would be all the tax avoiding expats coming home to vote.

  11. madmitch,

Simple solution, poll cards or even better tax return/records which I expect has been dealt with.

But the fact that the EU have now refused to take discussions any further until after the referendum means they have got the fix in.

Trick being I expect a landslide in support of the govt, only thing that will derail that will be military coup.

  12. So Celtic’s season got underway on the first week in July and will not end until late May and that’s one long helluva a season with an awful lot of football to be played with Europe and International matches. I imagine the support at the game yesterday enjoyed watching football on a good pitch in balmy summer weather as I did at a big game last Sunday in Croke Park among a 50,000 crowd in shirt sleeves with the day ending with a nice meal and a couple of pints with the mates. Hard to beat watching sport in good weather.

  13. Well hankray, if you enjoyed it so much can we presume you are not from Kildare then.

  14. 67heaven…,

If his heart is set on playing for us and he’s willing to accept our conditions then Wtf give the guy a chance. We don’t have too many players wanting to risk their careers for a shot with the tic, takes balls and if what’s been reported is true then I say good give him a shot.

Corkcelt………….Correct, the first game was a thriller, although the Dubs played some great stuff the atmosphere was almost funerial after the excitement of the opening match when Kildare went into meltdown. You always want to see a contest but happy to say overall it did not stop us enjoying a great day out. will the rebels beat the kingdom next Sunday?

I agree. I like LG (he is a good finisher), but I think Ciftci adds something we are lacking up front …. a bit of skill, a bit of size (he can hold the ball up) and a bit of attitude (although I think Scepovic has size and skill, and still hope he will work out for us… but you cant have too much of either up front). And if he wants to play for us…. then, sign him up!

Expect decline in morale, efficiency, quality, output, results…

  20. mike in toronto on

as has been pointed out, however …. the problem with Ciftci is, if he signs for someone else, he will get a ‘not proven’ or a 3 game ban … but if he signs for us, he will get an 8 game ban!

why has his hearing not taken place already? Do they not hold disciplinary hearings in the offseason?

I think Kerry will beat cork ( sorry corkie you know I love you) If they are ready. Sometimes the feckers don’t start training properly until the all ireland final

Hard to know what to make of Dublin. Winning almost too easily. Need a big test to see how good they are

  22. mike..,

I really don’t rate the guy but if he’s wiling to scupper his chances elsewhere potentially his career for a chance at Celtic then that’s enough for me to let him try.

He’s young enough to be coached and old enough to know his previous behaviour is not acceptable. It’s up to Ronny I’ll take his decision, I thought we were in for some Belgian what happened there ?

  23. Joe Filippis Haircut on

It surprised me that Cifti is only 23 years old so he still has time to develop I think a big bustling striker that upsets defenders is something we dont have I thought Guidetti might have been the man but unfortunately not. At around a million pounds for me he would be well worth the risk. H.H.

  24. Nye Bevans' rebel soldier on

Scepovic is not a target man,he is a poacher, his goals

for us have been scored from around the six yard box.

Ciftci would give us the hold up type player we need, and

he’s a no nonsense nasty type who will score goal’s in

Scotland, whether he can hack it in Europe is another

matter, the same could be said about much of our present

    squad.

  25. mike in toronto on

    Canamalar

As I have said often, in the last few years, I think we have signed some good strikers, but (i) they have taken time to adjust to the Scottish game and/or (ii) we have made them look ordinary.

This year, we are thin up front. If LG were to pick up an injury, we have no proven strikers ….. at least, with Ciftci, we know what we are getting, and know that he has already adjusted to the Scottish game.

I like what Citfci brings, but I thought that the looked like he could do with a decent RD pre-season to really get into top physical shape, so the sooner we get him in, the better.

  27. mike..,

Sorry but Stokesy was banging them in no long ago IMO a proven striker, plenty of boo BHOYS don’t like him but the bottom line is put in place and given the chances he’ll put them away, too many snobs and racists don’t like him.
