Jota needs to hide effectively too

228

With four assists and a goal in the opening two fixtures of the campaign, Jota is getting himself noticed.  We have seen this before with players on a prodigious streak.  Opposition teams scout Celtic, record where the danger comes from, then spend 90 minutes trying to inhibit the player.

We are inevitably going to see Kilmarnock and Hearts double up on him in the next two games.  This tactic often achieves its primary objective; man-marking a player, with a second defender sticking close, can subdue even the greatest talents.

This may be inevitable, but there are still things Celtic can do to exploit it.  Ange’s fondness for switching Jota from left to right will help, even though the player appears stronger on the left.  Teams will find it more difficult to plan how to double up on a player on both sides, than if he remains on one wing.

Players marked out of a game can also ‘hide’ effectively.  Drop deep, stay wide (or inside), and create space for others to exploit.  Jota may be our most creative talent right now, but he is not our only asset.  Consider how much close attention Kyogo Furuhashi has been on the receiving end in our first two games of the season.

If Killie double up on Jota, can they also inhibit Kyogo?  Don’t bet on it.

  1. Abada’s goal on Saturday was something to behold…the BBC guy called it ‘outrageous’ 😀

Celtic should do it more often

    Close attention , Paul?

Is that a euphemism for referee permitted barbaric assault ?

  5. We have a plethora of match winners, so feel free to double up. I’m hoping Killie and livingston are the bottom two but livingston keep getting results like yesterday 🤔

  6. Maybe switching McGregor further forward or O’Reilly dropping deep.

At the very least we should get big Joe up for a corner

Been a lovely start to the season. Team has been excellent, but will get better again. More to come from a hugely talented group.

It’s a pleasure to watch this team play. We will drop points when other teams get lucky, as Ross Co nearly did on Saturday. But I don’t see us ever getting outplayed in Scotland, other than perhaps at Ibrox if Sevco have a good day.

What a job big Ange has done in a year. Miraculous.

Come on Union St Gilloise. Finish them off.

  9. Personally, can’t understand the Julien situation at all. The guy is a good footballer no doubt.

Only conclusion I can make is that he has an attitude problem

    Shame

  10. Jota will be targetted by thugs the same as our other skillful players.

Both Celtic and the SFA have a duty of care to the players yet the silence

is deafening. You are either part of the problem or part of the solution.

My only hope now is that the Luxembourg club win the court case and we

can move out of the cesspit. If they win and we don’t move, I will take that

as a clear sign of our true position.

  11. Kinglubo,

The last two team selections and bench speak volumes.

I’m sure the fact that CJ is our 2nd most expensive signing ever will ensure that focus remains.on the player.

  12. When you have threats all over the field then doubling up becomes either impossible or futile.

Abada, O’Riley, DT or Hatate would be targets for man marking/ doubling up in teams without Kyogo and Jota.

Giako has proven he can find that half yard of space in the box.

This is an exciting squad only getting up to speed.

Plastic pitch aside I am more confident than normal about the trip to Kilmarnock.

  13. Can’t say I’m looking forward to the game on Sunday. Never do when it involves a plastic monstrosity.

Easy to predict how McInnes plays it. Let Celtic have the ball, every Killie player behind the ball, choke the game. When the home team do get a set piece, fire it at Lafferty’s head. And send category A thug, Alan Power, out with the instruction to take an early yellow, ref won’t issue an early straight red.

Would settle for one nil and no injuries right now.

  14. Back to basics – there was a foul on (I think) juranovic in the first – through the back of him. No free kick let alone the yellow it deserved. Potential leg breaker.

  15. I watched sevco v Killie highlights on Sportscene, I didn’t rate Killie’s performance at all, which surprised me as McInnes normally fares well against sevco. Every sevco chance the programme showed (including the two goals) came from a pretty poor Killie mistake, some real howlers in there including a Killie tackle that played a perfect through ball on goal for sevco.

I’m not going to fall into the cliché of insisting sevco are rubbish, but I’m not sure they would have got much from the game without Killie’s ineptitude.

And Morelos looks like a retired footballer who’s come back for a charity match, I hope they start him tomorrow.

    Killie 17 fouls 6 yellows

Seems we are the bully boys again….

  17. The TFOD2.1 booster club in the SPL are playing “Buddyball” on our team.

Ludge MIB know what they are up to and will referee accordingly.

There will be bookings but only to keep the stats reasonable.

I think they are fired up for this season from the MIB changes in the EPL.

Seems that the idea down south is to keep the game flowing so fewer fouls called.

Will transform itself into a charnel house in the SPL with us taking more than our air share.

    Worth a watching.

Along with the penalty count and the card count.

  19. CASH WARNING !

I dont know if anyone on here KNOW about this, but I read a NEWS ARTICLE earlier this morning and it stated that…..ALL Bank of England AND Bank of Scotland notes of the values of £20 AND £50 will NOT be usable in the UK from SETEMBER 30th 2022 onwards. Some BUSINESS’S…Pubs etc MAY NOT ACCEPT the OLD Notes after September 30th 2022.

Some Banks MAY allow the customer to DEPOSIT CASH Amounts ( £20 AND £50 Notes ) AFTER the Date of September 30th 2022, but this will depend on your Bank ?

This is apparently happening due to the Banks replacing OLD £20 and £50 Notes with NEW PLASTIC ONES for future use.

I have just TELEPHONED my Bank, who advised that ALL the ABOVE is CORRECT and ACCURATE. I have some Cash that I NOW must Deposit in my nearest Branch, but the Bank ALSO need 24 HOURS NOTICE of me physically entering my nearest Branch and DEPOSITING any amount of OLD NOTES ( ( £1,000…OR MORE), Before I go to the Bank.

I will need to PHONE my Banks Customer Service Number to ADVISE/CONFIRM that I PLAN to go to my Bank and Deposit some OLD £20 and/or £50 Notes, so that the PHONE Customer Service Team will then ALERT my nearest Branch of my forthcoming visit.

I hope that the above ADVICE is useful to some on here, who may NOT be aware of these changes with OLD £20 and £50 Notes ?

  20. Champions League 3 match ticket package.

It’s not a topic at the moment but it will be in a couple of weeks after the draw has been made. The board will already have set the prices but won’t divulge until after the draw.

For season ticket holders, £90 would be fair and reasonable. For non-season ticket holders, £150 . Only fair that those who pay upfront for the whole season are rewarded when the elite come to play under the disco lights.

We are supposed to be a club with a strong social conscience after all.

  21. Tom McLaughlin on

    MARKIEBHOY

You say that if the Luxembourgers win their court case and Celtic don’t move away from the SPFL, you’ll take that as a sign that the board don’t care.

Tell me. Where do you expect Celtic to move to? Do they just decide they’re moving to another league and that’s it? Don’t they need to ask, or at the very least solicit an invitation?

  22. The low block will be ever present this season, goals from all over the pitch greatly helps in overcoming it.

Two games in, we’ve scored 5 and had 5 different goal scorers.

When we do get in front, we’ve dropped very little points and manage the games very well.

At some point you hope teams have a go when they realise the futility in dropping so deep when they’re behind in need of a goal but I suspect many teams in Scotland are happy to take a goal defeat against us.

We’ll have to be patient this season but I’m confident there won’t be many weeks we’re we fail to score.

As for Sevco – push up on their full backs and make them play through the middle – extremely limited in central creativity. I’d be amazed if the Belgians don’t do this tomorrow night. Let their three defensive mids have the ball all night.

    £147 surely😎

  24. !!Bada Bing!! on

Jimdom- i have heard 3 game adult package £141 or £145…….surely a ton is plenty given the cost of living crisis…..

  25. Tom,

If this case is won there will be movement in my opinion.

I would expect some kind of Atlantic league offer to be put before clubs like our own, Ajax, Anderlecht and Scandinavian clubs who have been living in Poundland too long. The Bosman case revolutionised football, if this wins it won’t be far behind. I despise everything about Scottish Football. I would love this to finish it off permanently.

  26. We were paying £100 ten years ago for a CL group stage package so I think that’s a bit optimistic.

£130 would be cheap imo. Other clubs will be charging close to £200 should they make it.

  27. BB @ 2.02

Unfortunately the club is a bit old school when it comes to financial matters and protecting what they have.

If that is going to be the three ticket price then they are rinsing the market to the max — not good as it looks as if they are just interested in the revenue they can wring from the support.

The higher the prices they set — season ticket holder and non season ticket holder — the more that will be left over for returning part timers like me.

The board come across as very small time / cornershop / poujadist — their stream hunting efforts as embarrassing as they are amateur showing how thin skinned they are plus they cannot see the wood for the trees.

  28. MB @ 2.23

Not sure how that would work and who would benefit — EUFA has all the cards if they take the huff and stop any team taking part getting in the CL or EuL.

If our focus was on some sort of Atlantic League then how would we even qualify for the CL unless the SPL totally changes to allow us into a reduced / smaller SPL with a lot fewer games?

Consequently file under a can of worms.

If the much rumoured Super League gets off the ground then everything will be up for grabs.

Any thoughts on a CL that does not include teams from the Big 5 Leagues?

Would you still be able to charge £140 / £150 for a three game package?

Or would a Super League mean that the CL would be a lot more open if 16 / 18 / 20 “big” teams are not allowed in?

They have their Super League on Tues / Weds while the rest have a revamped CL / EuL?

TH — aka Spurs — into the Super League would be good for laughs and giggles though.

What a joke — expensive stadium so they have to get in.

Jimdom- i have heard 3 game adult package £141 or £145…….surely a ton is plenty given the cost of living crisis…..

    ————————————————————

I agree, a ton is plenty. But expect the price to be £138. The board will think we are getting off lightly having no qualifiers to pay for. There will be plenty of young kids experiencing the CL Groups for the first time, parents need to pay. Some families will not get much change out of 500 quid. Would like to hear our long term NED, Brian Wilson’s view. Brian was a socialist politician in an earlier life.
