Emeraldbee…I’m glad you enjoyed the film.
My wife is a producer/director of films. Aquarela took about seven years to make from the original idea. Her intention at first was to make a film about large companies such as Nestles who steal water from local communities. That practice still goes on. Anyway, she had a change of heart and went off in a different direction with her idea.
If you are going to make a film you need someone to buy into your idea. First port of call is a good, well known director. That certainly helps to raise money and interest. Victor Kossakovsky is in that category. He approached her because he wanted to make a film about Hugo Chavez (my wife is Venezuelan) but after he died in 2013 she persuaded Kossakovsky to direct her film. She then has to find co-producers willing to invest as well as someone to buy it. That can be, and in this case was, a long drawn out process. Kossakovsky is a notoriously difficult director to work with. Very passionate and very demanding, a perfectionist.
However, my wife is also very strong willed and was able to handle his occasional whims. He demanded the latest Arri cameras, filming 96 frames per second,(he came to Scotland and tried out the camera in the underwater horse scene in Loch Lomond), Dolby Atmos audio, drones, helicopters, underwater cameras, all the latest technology. If you noticed, even in the storm the camera was steady and there was no water on the lens. Not accidental by any means. They lost one camera when one of the drones decided to dive into the sea around Greenland.😊
So, her job during the filming process is to make sure everything goes to plan. It was a fair sized crew who needed to be fed and watered and kept safe in difficult conditions. Kossakovsky’s favourite moment was the drone shot that revealed the rainbow at the Angel Falls. He apparently cried tears of joy after that shot. The film was shortlisted though not actually nominated for an Oscar.
Personally, I loved the film and obviously I’m very proud of my wife’s achievement. Sorry for the long post but I thought it might be of interest to anyone who watched the film.
