La Liga president steps into Catalonia debate

719

President of La Liga in Spain has stepped into the Catalonian independence referendum debate by saying if Catalonia became independent clubs from that region, notably Barcelona and Espanyol, would have to leave the Spanish league and compete within their new domestic boundaries.

This claim is without foundation as multinational ‘domestic’ leagues are authorised by Uefa, Fifa and the EU, while Spanish clubs are able to compete with foreign clubs in European competition, but this intervention is likely to be one of the more emotive topics in the Catalonian debate.  Would Barcelona fans vote for Catalan independence if it required them to withdraw from the Spanish league and hand back their status as one of the game’s world powers?  Some would, some wouldn’t.

Football is the key cultural touchstone of European nations.  Those who want to preserve the Spanish nation know this.  Excluding Scottish clubs from the England and Wales football market has an enormous commercial impact on top-flight clubs here.  It also means that our key cultural touchstone is Scottish.

Those who want to build a cohesive UK would be more productive by working to end the exclusion of Scottish clubs from the England and Wales league than telling nationalists they would be wrong to hold another referendum.

Popcorn and ginger on hand for the latest Newco Rangers episode.  Flash mobs and EGMs, all destined to further tear the club apart.  As we’ve said here for years, internecine strife is the only thing that can really damage a club. That lot seem to have a infinite supply of the stuff.

    A wee word of warning

This Saturday 11th, Johnstone is going to be awash ( probably the wrong word to use ) with approx 800 & hangers on fae the OO. They are marching under the banner of “the sons of the Somme”

This is starting at 4.30 and funnily enough will be passing St Margaret’s about 5.15 – 5.30 ( just in time for the vigil mass )how the hell this is aloud to happen is beyond me!!

I know most on here will think Johnstone should be avoided at the best of times….but from Saturday afternoon onwards it’s a must.

    Auldheid,

As usual, my friend, you were able to accurately put into a few words, what it takes me pages to try to get across .

I am working on a few court submissions at the moment …. if (when?) I need my submissions edited down, I may call upon your services! Hope your rates are reasonable:)

Perhaps the former should remind us the footballers get to be professionals cos they have skilful feet.

So when they turn out to have more to offer – be it intelligence, integrity, humility and eloquence – maybe we should see that as bonus or blessing. Perhaps the latter gent reminds us of that and shoes why we should cherish the greats in the Celtic Fhamily.

Not to worry…. if I hadn’t been able to get you out in time for the game, I would have made some square sausage and brought it in for your breakfast (and as an added bonus, I would put a file in it before I cooked it, so you could use it to make your escape after breakfast!)

31 years. Congrats! In this day and age, that is some accomplishment. My parents were 49 years together when my dad passed. I’d have to be 100 to make that!

I am getting married this year, but would be 80 (!) if I were to be lucky enough to have 31 years with my lovely lady.

Re teams playing outside of their home country-

The Welsh teams only joined and were admitted to the English leagues as Wales did not have a national league of its own. This was due to the geography/ transportation issues in Wales which had impeded the formation of a Welsh national league for years; because of poor transportation links, it has always been much easier for Welsh clubs to travel east-west than north-south.

Berwick Rangers are relative newcomers to the Scottish league, joining in 1951. They only joined after their attempts to affiliate to the local North Northumberland league were rejected.

In both of these cases there were compelling reasons to accommodate clubs that had nowhere else to go. The argument was not about access to TV money and markets. It was simply about granting clubs access to league football which would otherwise be denied them.

The situation of the Welsh clubs and Berwick does not in any way strengthen Celtic`s claims to be admitted to the English leagues. We have league football, and right now its proving to be competitive.

We are a football club, first and foremost. Without the football club there is no business. So we must abide by the rules of football. These are that Celtic FC plays its domestic football in Scotland.

Rather than pining after England, I would much prefer it if those in charge at the club concentrated on putting in place a team, coaching and scouting infrastructure that gave us the best possible chance of winning the SPFL and qualifying for the CL.

That is the only recognised route to growing our revenue streams and developing our team.

  19. Blantyretim and others.

    Thanks for the kind thoughts.
