President of La Liga in Spain has stepped into the Catalonian independence referendum debate by saying if Catalonia became independent clubs from that region, notably Barcelona and Espanyol, would have to leave the Spanish league and compete within their new domestic boundaries.
This claim is without foundation as multinational ‘domestic’ leagues are authorised by Uefa, Fifa and the EU, while Spanish clubs are able to compete with foreign clubs in European competition, but this intervention is likely to be one of the more emotive topics in the Catalonian debate. Would Barcelona fans vote for Catalan independence if it required them to withdraw from the Spanish league and hand back their status as one of the game’s world powers? Some would, some wouldn’t.
Football is the key cultural touchstone of European nations. Those who want to preserve the Spanish nation know this. Excluding Scottish clubs from the England and Wales football market has an enormous commercial impact on top-flight clubs here. It also means that our key cultural touchstone is Scottish.
Those who want to build a cohesive UK would be more productive by working to end the exclusion of Scottish clubs from the England and Wales league than telling nationalists they would be wrong to hold another referendum.

Billy’s nickname in the early 60s was Cesar after Caesar Romero.
However, after a short time that got corrupted to Caesar, either because it was getting mis-written so often as such or because it suited Billy’s imperious playing style. Either way, he spent more of his career being likened to a Roman Emperor than to an obscure late 50s/ early 60s film actor.

Talking of nicknames being used in the wrong context i e Big Billy’s Cesar (no the dug or cat food) being changed to Caesar
When Brian ‘Choccy’ McLair moved to Man U, some in the English media thought his nickname was Jocky as he was the only one or one of the few Scots players at Old Trafford at the time.
They were too lazy or daft to equate Brian’s nickname with a cake.
Whilst on our 40th wedding anniversary on a Caribbean cruise I was given a Bramalea CSC bun net(2001) by a had from Lillie originally who had heard there was a mad Celtic supporter on board(should that be Celtic mad). I still wear it to games.Wonder if he is still in the Bramalea?

Spot on… when our most pressing issue is domestic success in League and Cups, we should looking for much more success there before turning our attentions to the CL. On one hand we complain about not enough doubles or trebles, poor performances and a lack of excitement on the park, and on the other hand we talk about competing in the EPL. We are a Million miles away from England right now, and that goes for their Championship too.
