La Liga president steps into Catalonia debate

719

President of La Liga in Spain has stepped into the Catalonian independence referendum debate by saying if Catalonia became independent clubs from that region, notably Barcelona and Espanyol, would have to leave the Spanish league and compete within their new domestic boundaries.

This claim is without foundation as multinational ‘domestic’ leagues are authorised by Uefa, Fifa and the EU, while Spanish clubs are able to compete with foreign clubs in European competition, but this intervention is likely to be one of the more emotive topics in the Catalonian debate.  Would Barcelona fans vote for Catalan independence if it required them to withdraw from the Spanish league and hand back their status as one of the game’s world powers?  Some would, some wouldn’t.

Football is the key cultural touchstone of European nations.  Those who want to preserve the Spanish nation know this.  Excluding Scottish clubs from the England and Wales football market has an enormous commercial impact on top-flight clubs here.  It also means that our key cultural touchstone is Scottish.

Those who want to build a cohesive UK would be more productive by working to end the exclusion of Scottish clubs from the England and Wales league than telling nationalists they would be wrong to hold another referendum.

Popcorn and ginger on hand for the latest Newco Rangers episode.  Flash mobs and EGMs, all destined to further tear the club apart.  As we’ve said here for years, internecine strife is the only thing that can really damage a club. That lot seem to have a infinite supply of the stuff.

Choccy nearly never made it to Manchester. Davie Hay went round to his house and Brian said he was happy to stay – then shortly afterwards Davie was sacked and Alex Ferguson took advantage.

Billy McNeill got our revenge when he was able to sign the highly rated Joe Miller from Aberdeen. Ferguson was raging with his old club as he thought he had a gentleman’s agreement to sign wee Joe for Manchester United!

I mentioned last week that we only signed Judas from Watford because we had a £300k bid for Davie Dodds turned down by Dundee United!

We are not be going to get an invite to the english set up, at any level, so the next best thing imo, is a brit set up, a euro league would be the preferred option, but failing that a reigional brit league would be my choice.

We have no right to walk into the English setup at the expense of an English team. We aren’t wanted or needed. How about we actually just try to avoid shambolic preparations for the CL and therefore give ourselves a chance to progress in Europe?

Agree with what you say. I don`t think any politicians are interested in building a cohesive UK.

Not when everyone of them is fixated with slashing welfare, allowing megarich corporations to enslave people in zero hours contracts, selling off public assets such as Royal Mail for a pittance etc.

Not one of them gives a toss that more and more people in the terminally knackered UK are reliant on food banks. They would rather toe the party line, further their own career, and maximise the extent to which their second home can be kitted out at the taxpayer`s expense.

In the extremely unlikely event that any politicians grow a conscience I hope that they would divert their energies towards trying to sort out poverty, tax evasion, zero hours contracts, the health service and pollution/ climate change rather than focus on the pathetic whinging of football clubs that simply want to take in more TV money to pass on to overrated footballers.

I`m at a loss to work out how on earth Celtic playing Sheffield United would build a more cohesive UK. Would the fans of both teams be expected to drink warm ale together before morris dancing, waving Union Jack Flags and sing Rule Britannia for the benefit of the Sky cameras?

Celtic have no rightful claim to a place in the English league. And to try and justify their pursuing a place in the English league on the basis that it is for the good of the UK, or that it would build a more cohesive UK, is way off the mark in my view.

I think some of Gideon`s mates are more in it than the rest of us – such as his long time friend and Best Man, Peter Davies, who made an £18 million profit on Royal Mail shares in their first day of trading after privatisation.

    Sickening stuff.

Can`t see Gideon spending any time securing Celtic`s passage into the English leagues “in the interests of building a more cohesive UK.” Too busy helping his mates fill their boots.

Blinkin’ flip, canny trust embdy these days!

Seriously, the amount of oversight bodies and regulators that are in place these days, you’d think it would be impossible to get away with stuff like that.

Well,it might be were they not filled with cronies and placemen.

Still,as long as they continue to sanction the unemployed because they’ve filled a form in wrongly,I expect they’ll make up the shortfall.
