Lack of respect for Molde and Malmo

Before this Europa League group got underway the trips to Istanbul and Amsterdam looked daunting. Those games produced two credible draws, but things went wildly wrong elsewhere.

Our goal last night was a peach. Dedryck Boyata split the Fenerbahce defence to open up space for Mikael Lustig to cross for Kris Commons, who peeled off his marker to create the space to head home. Unfortunately only one point was collected as we lost another Keystone Cops goal.

Craig Gordon seems to be struck by a lack of conviction this season. His was not the only failing at our repeated corner kick fiascos but letting a ball trickle through his legs as he appeared caught in two minds is indicative of a player who is doubting himself.

You know Kris Commons scores and creates huge goals for Celtic, we’ve discussed it often enough here. Despite his veteran status and apparent ill-fitting to our system he remains by far our most effective player.

For Ronny, it didn’t go wrong in Europe this season against Fenerbahce or Ajax (I’m absolving him of blame for Efe’s error or a last minute breakaway goal at Celtic Park), it went wrong home and away to Molde and Malmo. We appeared to underestimate both.  Did the manager have something to prove against fellow Norwegian managers?

Celtic dominated possession stats in all four games against Molde and Malmo but the Scandinavians exploited the acres of space which simply didn’t exist in our games against Ajax, Fenerbahce or Qarabag, for that matter. Ajax, Fenerbahce and Qarabag got the respect they deserved, not so Molde and Malmo.

The failure is, of course, more complicated than that. Jozo missed the bulk of the campaign, while Dedryck is only just beginning to look like a footballer (lovely pass for the goal last night). Scott Allan looks promising, but we’ve not seen enough of him either due to injury.

Curiously, Ronny’s big 2015 No. 1 striker target, Nadir, looks less like a Ronny Deila player than anyone we’ve bought in years. Knowing we were interested in him, I watched his performances against Celtic last season, and made the same observation at the time.

What happens if your keeper’s form falls off a cliff, one of your new defenders doesn’t settle quickly, two other new players miss months through injury, and your new striker doesn’t morph into a different player? You finish bottom of the Europa League group.

Celtic must now consider their strategy for January. Successive transfer windows have left us weaker, not stronger. Identify the reasons, remediate and we can build on the away performances which bookended this Europa League campaign.

    I remember Kano posting his actual address on here one night inviting a blogger to come over and sort it out. Believe it was because he was accused of being an anonymous hard man,,what a response.

     

    A mad Mitch vs p8ddy titanic tussle stands out from those days also,,,never seen bolding like it before or since. Now that was a debate worthy of televising. A true heavyweight clash when both were in their prime. A draw I believe,,no rematch that I remember. Honours even.

    How are you pal , I’ve said it before , what a lovely boy you have in Ryan .

     

     

    I can’t add anything to the discussions/arguments/debates everything has been said very eloquently sometimes robust /argumentative by more learned persons than myself , I just find it depressing these days on here when posters can’t show empathy , patience and civility to one another , it’s only a blog .

     

     

    While I’m on (tipsy) can I say a big thank you to ” WEEFRATHETIM ” and “DENA ” without these two Celtic Supporters (legends) I wouldn’t have met such good guys like yourself , I won’t do my usual list , but if it were not for the COARNIR my Celtic experience …ach I better go .. Love yeez awe ……

     

     

    PS… Weeron still haven’t forgiven myself for spoiling your experience at the corner , get yerself down there when the good guys are there .

    Gerry, my ears are flame resistant now with the amount of verbals I get in the house

     

     

    I think Pat was our top scorer in the 93/94 season. I have heard and not sure how accurate it is. his nearest and dearest had upset a few people behind the scenes at the club. I don’t know in which way but this was the alleged reason he moved back to hibs.

    Delaney’s, I first Tosh when he played for Celtic Boys Club in a game at the Blairdardie pitches. It was the.same weekend the maestro ran the show at Wembley for Scotland U/15’s at Wembley. Tosh was the standout player for the boys club U/15’s in that game I watched. I was suprised he ended up at Dundee instead of us. It may have been had Mark Reid and Jim Mc inally on our books who were both left backs.

    Dundee offered Tosh a contract. Celtic offered him a YTS. Tosh left Saint Tams at Christmas in 4th year. He never sat his O Levels. The rest is history. He lived all our dreams.

    A bit left field , you stayed in Kinfaunz ave for a while , a family that I used to meet on holiday in DUNBAR in the mid seventies came from Kinfaunz ave , can’t remember their second name but the dads name was Charlie and barber a and Veronica were his daughters a long shot but did you know of them , also Banks the Bookie along shot I know just thought I’d ask , sorry for butting in and also spelling , drink has nowt todo with it ,I’m just a poor speller (is it a word)
