Legends, history, £6k and tens of thousands of Celtic fans

1401

Congratulations to everyone who participated in the 9-in-a-row CQN Charity Golf Day at Aberdour in Fife, yesterday.  The event, auctions and raffles leading up to it raised £6000, the bulk of which will go to the 1254125 appeal, while some will go to Clic Sargent, who help families with children with that dreadful disease.

Lisbon Lion, Willie Wallace, and his wife Olive, were fantastic guests, who enjoyed spending a day with 70 or so friends.  It doesn’t matter how far away Lisbon Lions live, you always find them the same way.

My sincere thanks to everyone who came along, bid of the auctions or bought a raffle ticket, all in aid of people you will never know. Thank you from all of us to John, Kevin and John, for their stressful work in pulling the event together, for the ninth year!

125 years ago a handful of people, living in a community devastated by hunger, destitution and TB, but who could make a difference, decided they would make a difference.  As a result, Celtic was born.  Celtic is not just something to brighten up your weekends, it’s not purely there to build friendships or to create common-interests across the generations, it is a movement you are required participate in.

The clarion call to all Celtic fans this year is to do more than just put your hand in your pocket, the spirit which gave birth to the concept of Celtic will only survive if those who can get involved, inspire a fresh generation by doing so.

Go register for 1254125, and commit to doing something to raise £125.  It can be anything.  You can walk a 1888 meters, go to the barbers and get a baldy to celebrate the signing of Amido Balde, it doesn’t need to be as ambitious as the 150 brave souls who right this very moment are atop Ben Nevis about to undertake the world’s highest huddle.

If you believe in this club, don’t leave it to someone else to take care of what’s important.  The same goes for your season ticket.  It has been over a century since we have been as close to the founding spirit of our club, but the sporting dramas which inspire us all are not achieved by new strikers, they are the fruits of tens of thousands fans buying season tickets.

Go stake your claim on Celtic.

  3. b2k,

Equating the two independence movements simply doesn’t work – just as it would be wrong to say that it is strange that some want Ireland united but the UK divided.

And self determination does not necessarily mean independence anyway. If a majority of Scots, as seems likely right now, vote to remain within the UK then that is self determination.

  4. Folks,

Took part in the Nevis Huddle yesterday. Would say I am in agony from the hair down but the knees, oh heel ,the knees !! Someone told me it was harder coming down and how I laughed – how can it possibly be harder coming down ? It’s hard to compare the pain with childbirth as I am a bloke but it is worse than a stinging 3 iron on a cold day.

Any way, superb experience. Met some cracking fellow ‘tic fans. If any CQNer knows of someone with a beautiful little dog called McGrory, I have a brilliant photo as the wee chap sauntered up the hill.

  5. Taranis

well done you and to all involved, brilliant effort.

I’ve got the walking poles as my knees are shot to bits after years of abuse on ash parks…

  6. Great pics from the summit of Ben Nevis well done to all who took part in the Worlds Highest Huddle, brilliant stuff from our fans from golfers, mountaineer huddlers, cyclists, etc makes you proud to be a Celtic fan and there efforts for 1254125 and other charities

On CQN there seems to be a group of republicans, eg Oglach, who are keen to see Ireland united and free from UK interference but want Scotland to remain as part of the UK . This is beyond strange. Self determination should be a right for all.

    ————-

Self determination ‘ a right for all’ very true yet some peoples have to struggle through generations to gain freedom and the right to govern their own destiny from a foreign occupation. Now it seems some others just get a wee bit fed up with their nefarious partnership with their neighbours as they do think it is financially worth it anymore and want to end the union. Remember a willing union that murdered and subjugated millions while growing rich on exploitation and slavery.

Some rational people may well ask ‘what have they done to earn independence’ ?

Personally I really don’t care if Scotland remains a part of the UK or otherwise. I am just somewhat surprised that some believe that the balance of power in Scotland would change with independence. IMO nothing would change the old order would remain along with the old prejudice.

  8. Taranis,

    Congratulations on a fantastic achievement.

I know McGrory and his owner very well.

He is mostly a CQN lurker and very occasional poster.(his owner that is!).

I am sure he will spot your post however I will make sure he is aware of it.

    Thanks.

Divorce should be a right for all.

Don’t mean you have to get divorced..

If a majority Scots want to leave the UK then Scotland will leave the UK.

The majority of us don’t want to.

    Deal with it.

And equating Ireland’s and Scotland’s positions within the Union is like equating rape to consensual sex.

Another Golf Day at Aberdour has gone by, roll on 2014 and another helping of meeting like minded Celtic Folk.

Sorry for the duff weather forecast,BBC did their best to put a dampner on our day,and I went in for overkill with believing every thing BBC say,They don’t tell the truth about anything Celtic, now they’re trying to muck up the weather forecasts to spoil our day,I’m glad to say they got it all wrong as usual.

Great day,( and night) was had by all and I look forward to meeting you all at future events.

Thanks to PFayr I wasn’t knackered before I got to Aberdour, door to door delivery service was the call of the day,and in a nice shiny Mercedes Sporty job, luxury travel on Friday. Thanks to you and Lennybhoy for great company on the day.

I met some nice people on the day, A wee word for the trio from Dunblane, you were good company lads, and I promise that I will take up the invite to a day out at Dunbane Golf Course, It won’t be in the near future but once I get in some practice I shall attend with 3 like minded Celtic Folk. It may get me into playing golf again, miracles do happen.

It was a pleasure for me, and a few others to meet him for breakfast, mind you it was in a different Hotel, from the one you stayed at.

He visited our Hotel after the Golf day had finished, and I had to take him back to his Hotel around 1, or half one, And next morning while the residents of the Hotel were at breakfast in walks the bold ACGR and seats himself at our table, then proceeds to avail himself of a glass of Orange, a coffee, and cereals, toast, and marmelade, I’ve never seen that happen before, calm as a cucumber, sat down and had breakfast with us, my estimation of him rose after that.

What a fantastic day on Friday at Aberdour, Taggsybhoy, blantyrekev, Paul and everybody involved in making the day happen thankyou so much. It was my first CQN open and hopefully not my last ( if we can keep the date round about liquidation date ).

The weather was great, the golf was, well far from great…. But the company was outstanding. Podi , midfield maestro, ACGR, Gordon j, etc etc etc…. Too many to mention.

When Willie Wallace spoke, you could hear a pin drop, I along with the 70 or so others was mesmerised with his tales and anecdotes of past….LEGEND.

No it’s not strange at all.

In the six counties the nationalists will be in the majority; in Scotland, hostility towards the Roman Catholic minority is on the rise. The Independence party has in the recent past openly targeted sections of the Celtic support and created legislation to harm Celtic supporters. Officers of the state eg the Lord Advocate and police have publicly endorsed such perverse law and ideation.

    You miss my point.

The point being that Mr. Livingston is entirely conflicted when it comes to balancing the rules of the game and pursuing them on behalf of Celtic FC and making good business decisions for BT.

The by product of strengthening the Old Firm brand will not be lost on Mr Livingston like it is here on CQN but he has far more interest in business than he has in the welfare of Celtic FC or its fans.

Most on here will think that is fair enough or revel in utter denial incapable of confronting what looks like the truth.

Its those that know the truth but present Celtics present stance of doing nothing as a fait a compli that are doing the most damage I feel.

WEDNESDAY was a momentous day in Scottish football history as the SFL merged with the SPL to end their 123-year history.

But no matter what happens, the Hotline never changes – the flames of fury continue to burn.

And SFL president Jim Ballantyne felt the anger of the great Scottish public yesterday after he claimed his organisation had been victims of a takeover.

J Wilson, Glasgow, said: “Ballantyne’s reaction sums up why it had to change – self-serving dinosaurs who go in the huff when they don’t get their own way. To see him sitting there with his petted lip as he realised the gravy train was coming to a halt was priceless.”

Mark Clark, Menteith, said: “Ballantyne’s moaning and groaning was brilliant.

“The fact he disagrees with the SFL chief executive David Longmuir sums things up and why we needed a change. Get a grip and stop thinking about yourself.”

Billy Kelly, Muir, said: “This is great news for the future of Scottish football. Embrace the changes and don’t cry into your pillow like this Ballantyne.”

But not everyone agreed as Davie Taggart, Elgin, said: “Scottish football is a poisoned chalice. You can jazz it up all you want and change its name but the people running the game are just greedy.”

Dear dear, what a poor excuse for a story on so many levels.

    In no particular order,

There is a major difference between ‘better than’ and ‘the best since’. Yet he quotes the later from baldes camp but then writes his argument based on the former being said which it wasnt

Who are these gullible fans he is on about? I can guarantee that i talk to, listen to and read opinions of more celtic fans per day than he does in a month yet ive not heard any fan give any thoughts on balde higher than just waiting and see once he starts playing for us

Finally he says that all the hype etc is harmless stuff to keep tongues wagging over the summer. Correct, so why does he write such an opinionated screed of nonsense about it then.
