Legends, history, £6k and tens of thousands of Celtic fans

1401

Congratulations to everyone who participated in the 9-in-a-row CQN Charity Golf Day at Aberdour in Fife, yesterday.  The event, auctions and raffles leading up to it raised £6000, the bulk of which will go to the 1254125 appeal, while some will go to Clic Sargent, who help families with children with that dreadful disease.

Lisbon Lion, Willie Wallace, and his wife Olive, were fantastic guests, who enjoyed spending a day with 70 or so friends.  It doesn’t matter how far away Lisbon Lions live, you always find them the same way.

My sincere thanks to everyone who came along, bid of the auctions or bought a raffle ticket, all in aid of people you will never know. Thank you from all of us to John, Kevin and John, for their stressful work in pulling the event together, for the ninth year!

125 years ago a handful of people, living in a community devastated by hunger, destitution and TB, but who could make a difference, decided they would make a difference.  As a result, Celtic was born.  Celtic is not just something to brighten up your weekends, it’s not purely there to build friendships or to create common-interests across the generations, it is a movement you are required participate in.

The clarion call to all Celtic fans this year is to do more than just put your hand in your pocket, the spirit which gave birth to the concept of Celtic will only survive if those who can get involved, inspire a fresh generation by doing so.

Go register for 1254125, and commit to doing something to raise £125.  It can be anything.  You can walk a 1888 meters, go to the barbers and get a baldy to celebrate the signing of Amido Balde, it doesn’t need to be as ambitious as the 150 brave souls who right this very moment are atop Ben Nevis about to undertake the world’s highest huddle.

If you believe in this club, don’t leave it to someone else to take care of what’s important.  The same goes for your season ticket.  It has been over a century since we have been as close to the founding spirit of our club, but the sporting dramas which inspire us all are not achieved by new strikers, they are the fruits of tens of thousands fans buying season tickets.

Go stake your claim on Celtic.

I only mention those two trainers since they’re scottish and would utilise the scottish tracks. My own are trained in England as it suits me better for now.

    As does Boris Johnson.

The reason is simple. They are all articulate and have a degree of charisma.

“Galloway like Farage gets a disproportionate time on all TV stations and political programmes.”

You are half right with that.

George Galloway, as a Member of Parliament, is not in the media any more than many other MPs.

Farage and his UKIP sidekicks are definitely given disproportionate exposure in the media – given they have never had any MPs.

They are represented on Question Time every other week while the Green Party, as an example, are on QT about once a year.

  8. Politicians as a group are a pretty dull bunch these days. Most of them are middle class, articulate and on message, spouting the party line. That means the few who are a bit different stand out, those who are either naturally charismatic, court publicity or have an individual and non-mainstream viewpoint.

The likes of Farage, Johnson and Galloway are good tv. They are controversial in their own ways and will get people talking.

No I wouldnt trust them at all Canamalar, if they were out of the equation then more Scots would be up for the yes vote, it’s a bit of irony that the snp in power in Scotland, has led folk like me who are against independence. I do understand that voting for independence does not mean a vote for the snp but that’s the way it will be seem outside Scotland and perhaps internally?

    Fair enough.

I go by the number of new youtube videos I see every day from UK political shows and undoubtedly Farage and his gang are on far more than they deserve to be although recently they did win some victory in the only place they can realistically.

Whether it is SKY, BBC, ITV, C4, Russia today or Euro News both those guys are heavily represented.

My disdain for Farage is much greater I have to say.

Canamalar I’d reckon a syndicate of 20 would be approx £60 per month per head. Maybe a little less. Basically £1200 per month training fees. Gives each owner 5%. Equates to a bit more than a hoof but not quite a leg:-).

I had one broke a leg on the gallops. No insurance. Money and drain.

  17. Vmhan,

I’d be more inclined to vote for independence if I knew what I was getting, what I can’t understand (aye right:o) is why they don’t put up a constitution, then everyone knows exactly what they are getting, for me it really is that simple, voting to have your rights enshrined can only be a winner, the fact they don’t do this only creates suspicion.

I have never written to the club as the last time I did so I felt insulted by the reply.

I decided three years ago that they are only interested in the money. If the ST uptake was as poor as it was before Tony Mowbary got the sack he would still be in situ and Rangers going for 6 in a row. I therefore believe that it is the only thing that motivates our clubs custodians. Which I may add is a difficult thing to do. It has meant that those who have vicariously represented me. Do so no longer. It means my trendy Celtic fashions being fout years out of date.

If the club is not prepared to listen to us or communicate with us …. AS THEY CLEARLY ARE … I considered our reaction to the ketteling in the Gallowgate as a fudge and a kop out and an admission of guilt. Considering our major part in riding the Paul Mc Bride offensive behaviour bill and then pretending it was nothing to do with us tells me all I need to know. A massive miscalculation that the club will not take any responsibility for.

When it has now got to the stage that we have to lobby and mobilise our own support instead of our own custodians to obtain anything. I am left asking why ?

Clearly the plc do not want what we want. Making profit is more important than a level playing field. On and off the park. At games and on Tuesday mornings.

So what exactly does the plc think of our ethos ? Not much clearly. Apart from squeezing every thin dime ? What else do they do ?

The club is being ran for them and for profit. Everything else is a remote second.

Who do they represent and why is it all so secretive and clandestine. What have they got to hide ? Why the demands … Which I believe to be cosmetic .. for transparency and good governance at the SFA … But not for Celtic FC and its fans ?

I honestly find the tidbits thrown to Paul67 and Phil Mac an insult to our intelligence. Top 20 in Europe for turnover and this is how we treat our own support.

Is it because we are lesser members of our all inclusive family ?

I genuinely believe that I am a dinosaur. An old jungle jim. One with a conscience who believes in fair play and justice. I also have a brain slightly larger than most dinosaurs. Only slightly mind and that the plc would like rid of that kind of supporter.

I.e One WHO asks either difficult questions or is not that such a fanatic that I would do the boards job for them. If that sounds arrogant I only base it on the lack of intelligent and civilised debate on the subject. So a genuine thanks for engaging with me on it. It could also be down to rigid belief systems and I am irritating those that belief without daring. to. questioning that everything is rosy.

I also dont care if we win lose or draw but everything else I do care about. Unfortunately a large swathe dont look any deeper for as long as we are winning and the board know it.

I think the pursuit of these type of fans is short termism. Especially when Sevco start winning SPL championshups in about 156 weeks time and its an issue that needs addressing.

    But it wont.

I therefore find myself with the evidence in front of me losing faith entirely with the clubs custodians.

We need Celtic men at the helm.

It’s a real bugbear of mine – just how much coverage a party which basically amounts to the BNP, minus the thugs, is given so much coverage when they represent so few people in the country.

They have never come close to having an elected MP and their core support comes from people who hanker for a country that never actually existed.

I don’t reckon Farage is particularly charismatic either, as some people appear to think, he comes across as petty and ill-informed on virtually every issue.

But even if he were charismatic it doesn’t justify having any of the other UKIP buffoons on QT every other week.

Galloway is an elected MP and he obviously splits opinion. He may well be interested in himself first, but the recent expenses scandals have shown the vast majority of MPs fall into that category.

In his defence though, Galloway was not implicated in any of that.

Absolutely pal. I as a UK citizen (soon to be a Scottish Citizen hopefully) living and working in the EU loathe that man and his attacks on Eastern Europeans in particular.

They hanker for a time when England was for the English and the only foreigners they saw were Scots, Irish or Welsh or Americans in the movies.

    A truly reprehensible mob.

The SNP for all their faults don’t want Scotland to turn into Brigadoon but it won’t be long before someone starts quoting that.

To Galloway’s credit he was not involved in that particular scandal but he has been involved in some other questionable stuff but then again he’s a politician.

I’d be very surprised if he is returned in 2015 but I do worry that the BNP in suits will take some seats.

Here’s the 1 in 29 bit from the Observer not the Guardian but they are sister papers right?

London ranks top in the world – ahead of Tokyo and New York – for the number of multi-millionaires, although it also has some of the worst child poverty rates in the UK. The capital has 4,224 multi-millionaires – classed as individuals with net assets of $30m (£19m) or more excluding their primary residences, according to analysts Wealth Insight. It puts the number of dollar millionaires at 281,000 or, in other words, a staggering one in 29 Londoners.

These are people Johnson is eager to hang on to, as he stresses the tax revenue that is being garnered from the capital’s financial services and its high-earning employees. But if London begins to pull yet further away from the rest of the UK as recovery takes root, resentment may grow that the crucible of the financial crisis which plunged the economy into the deepest recession in a generation is – yet again – taking the lion’s share of the benefits of growth.
