Legends, history, £6k and tens of thousands of Celtic fans

1401

Congratulations to everyone who participated in the 9-in-a-row CQN Charity Golf Day at Aberdour in Fife, yesterday.  The event, auctions and raffles leading up to it raised £6000, the bulk of which will go to the 1254125 appeal, while some will go to Clic Sargent, who help families with children with that dreadful disease.

Lisbon Lion, Willie Wallace, and his wife Olive, were fantastic guests, who enjoyed spending a day with 70 or so friends.  It doesn’t matter how far away Lisbon Lions live, you always find them the same way.

My sincere thanks to everyone who came along, bid of the auctions or bought a raffle ticket, all in aid of people you will never know. Thank you from all of us to John, Kevin and John, for their stressful work in pulling the event together, for the ninth year!

125 years ago a handful of people, living in a community devastated by hunger, destitution and TB, but who could make a difference, decided they would make a difference.  As a result, Celtic was born.  Celtic is not just something to brighten up your weekends, it’s not purely there to build friendships or to create common-interests across the generations, it is a movement you are required participate in.

The clarion call to all Celtic fans this year is to do more than just put your hand in your pocket, the spirit which gave birth to the concept of Celtic will only survive if those who can get involved, inspire a fresh generation by doing so.

Go register for 1254125, and commit to doing something to raise £125.  It can be anything.  You can walk a 1888 meters, go to the barbers and get a baldy to celebrate the signing of Amido Balde, it doesn’t need to be as ambitious as the 150 brave souls who right this very moment are atop Ben Nevis about to undertake the world’s highest huddle.

If you believe in this club, don’t leave it to someone else to take care of what’s important.  The same goes for your season ticket.  It has been over a century since we have been as close to the founding spirit of our club, but the sporting dramas which inspire us all are not achieved by new strikers, they are the fruits of tens of thousands fans buying season tickets.

Go stake your claim on Celtic.

  1. yesterday for some reason was the first day in over a year that I have not logged on to cqn…..I have been to England, wales, holland, Portugal and turkey, but never missed a day (that i’m aware of) of reading our beloved blog(thank you paul67,and all who assist you) it was only last night as I was counting the sheep(ahem) that I realised I had missed my daily fix, after a great fathers day lunch here I am stuffed to the gunnels with two bottles of the finest hooch to look forward to and I think to myself, what a wonderful world (sorry mr Armstrong)…….family maters aside(which are unquantifiably superb) and just on being a tim the only time it was better being a tim was from may 25 1967 till the end of the man u ,benfica game at wembely……because all during that period we as tims all supported the reigning European champions. I hope and pray that this will happen again in my lifetime(and remain eternally greatfull that it did once ) but the way the game is run now I just don’t see it happening….however I diverse….the period I refer to was a celtic celebration over the period of the stated year(I am aware that it was also the era which saw the start of NIAR.and the only year that a Scottish team won every tournament that they entered ) now we are in unchartered waters, the demise of our main rivals has saw celtic achieve great things this season, and us as iys support are lapping it up it just cant get any better can it? just a couple of current examples celtic are offered what we consider a derisory figure of 4.5 million for hooper..sevco(our main rivals{?} ) have a whole squad that wouldn’t command half that value…we have just won the double….(last 16 barca..etc) and to raise interest at parkhead we can watch A Balde T Watt do what they do best. whilst elsewhere they can watch a bunch of fa**ys do what they do best……….I know what I prefer (wink wink ,nudge, nudge)

Just been listening to Simon and Garfunkel album bridge over troubled water. first album i learned cover to cover. Bit of nostalgia. A few tracks on that album I absolutely love. Brings Bach happy memories.

  8. victor has been good for celtic, if we get between 10 to 15 million for him i’d be happy. the same goes for hooper, although 5 million is good money given his contract situation. if both want to leave we need to move them on. the space created can be filled by;

moving for the next group of up and coming players i.e. 19 to 24 years old, with the potential to improve and a desire to prove themselves (balde). just need to add centre back, forward and creative midfielder that fit the criteria, supplemented by our own academy bhoys. half the transfer income for victor and hooper would get us what we need.

other half can pay for a significant part of the celtic triangle i.e. museum, café, restaurant, members club, sports bar, food outlets, landscaping etc…, which will improve the quality of service to celtic, visiting supporters/ people on match and non-match days. increase income/ revenue resources etc is the name of the game. always betting that drum.

anyone know when celtic will commence work on the new avenue?

This is not specifically aimed at you pal but I’ve been holding this back and quite frankly I need to say this.

The first thing I’d say is just because he supports Celtic it doesn’t mean I agree with everything Galloway says and nor should anyone do that. John Reid and him both support Celtic and I like neither of them nor agree with much of their politics.

Galloway tried very very hard to make this about Ethnic nationalism – which is isn’t.

His “I’m Scottish I should get a vote” was the best example of this – his point was I’m a foreigner now and it’s not fair – well Galloway all I’d say to you is if you only get 3.3% of the vote in a Scottish election (the only groups to get less are UKIP, the BNP and Smeato) what does that say about you? Bitter much? It is akin to that fool Margaret Curran who said her son would become a foreigner. My God. He’ll always be your son just as I’ll be my Mother’s son from Slovakia until the day I die and I don’t get a vote either.

The only people who drag ethnicity, race, religion or nationality into the debate are Unionists and a quick glance at their rhetoric shows you that.

    Farage screams – Anti-English racism

Galloway screams anti- Catholic, anti-minority in the papers

Margaret Curran (and others) scream foreigners, borders, passports

Others go on about Scots vs English.

It is classic divide and conquer but if you need to keep talking about these things chances are being together isn’t working the way you want it to and people are waking up if somewhat slowly.

His point about a legacy of grievance and grudge is correct but not the way he imagines it. The way the unionists and the media who control the debate and have a pro-union agenda are trying to make this Scotland vs England, Britain vs Scotland (little Bravehearters), Catholics vs Protestants (Galloway himself has said this) ethnic minorities vs everyone who is “Scottish”, ethnic nationalism and not civic are only going to make those divisions (if they exist to the extent the Unionists clearly believe them to and like and want them to to scare people into voting NO) worse and in the event of a NO it will create a bitterness and pain which will last a long long time and which will drive up tensions if it already is not.

Supporting evidence suggests it is creating tension and I think this needs addressing.

By the way Galloway (if you’re reading this) it is the union which creates grudge and grievance and all the things you say you despise not independence.

The Debate deserves better and the voters do as well. The programme allowed him and Farage to spout rather nasty views in my book and no debate was had – mission accomplished at the Beeb. No serious points made and no intelligent debate was had.

Margo MacDonald when the date was announced and having heard the party-political snide remarks from the big parties, rose and screamed at the chamber and told them “This is for a country’s soul” and that the level of the debate needs to be raised. She was right and it has not been one iota especially from the scaremongering better together mob and the MSM.

If she stood for office in an Independent Scotland she’d have my vote. She for me is a true Scottish Heroine.

    Anyway.

Galloway typifies a low level debate in my view. A blowhard with little substance other than the things his audience love to believe whether real or imagined and a man who holds what I can see are quite contradictory positions – youtube videos catch him out rather frequently on a number of these.

He’s good at talking and expressing himself but that is about it for me.

I was waiting for the old “I don’t want to break up these small tiny insignificant islands in an uncertain 21st Century” line that he does when he is on his best behaviour and showing good manners to the “British audience” – but methinks if another part of these tiny insignificant better together islands eventually gets the chance for a referendum to rejoin another part of the islands he’ll be on there as Moses with Pharaoh – Let my people go.

Sorry but he is a hypocrite. A serial supporter of independence for some countries from larger regimes when it suits him but any group of people except the Scots. He makes me sick if I’m honest. A serial separatist and a serial unionist in one. My hero.

Riddoch also said there were 1 in 29 Londoners who were Dollar Millionaires – that is a fact. Galloway called her a liar – check the report in the Guardian if you don’t believe me – google it – I did and it is real. She wasn’t saying there is no poverty in London, she is highlighting the massive gap and the fact that the political system is geared towards London and the South East and so that’s what Political parties aim their policies towards. She was right and he was wrong and he tried very hard to smear her as some kind of nationalist looney which she isn’t. She hadn’t even said before that show if she’d vote YES but I’m glad she did highlighting Trident and poverty and all the things the Union brings Scotland and we pay for the privilege as Alan Bisset’s poem showed.

She wants real change and Milliband and Balls have demonstrated this last fortnight nothing will change of any significance in 2015 should they win – which they won’t because the South east elect every Government we’ve had with one exception since 1945.

Galloway’s rubbish about The SNP deciding who was on QT was simply playing into the mindset where the SNP must be portrayed as extremists – another unionist tactic. The SNP guy rightly said the panel was disproportionate and he’d have liked parity – he was correct and he was also correct and rightly highlighted for the UK audience that YES is not supported by only one political party – there are several and within two of the three “major” UK Parties we have groups like Labour Voters for Independence – look them up on Facebook you might see someone you know. Instead of representation worthy of the debate we got loudmouthed sensationalist rubbish which thankfully some of the young audience managed to raise – However when you get a kid saying we’ll be one step closer to finding aliens on a show and it isn’t the most mental comment of the night you know you’ve hit car crash TV.

The show was billed beforehand about being about Scottish Independence but was later changed and the 60 minutes had 40 of those minutes on that issue or issues surrounding it. Seems having a 16-17 year old audience getting the only vote in the UK that that age group are being afforded for now on the only issue they can vote on for now is a show about Scottish Independence to me. I was shouted down the other night when I said this but having watched a show where 40 minutes from 60 (approx) were on this topic I’d say my complaint and YES voters’ complaints are justified.

Galloway may be Scottish and he may have a stronger connection to this debate than other people they could have got on but he and his party are a political irrelevance in Scotland and have no effect or influence over this huge call next September. Ditto Farage and his gang. Neither of them will win any seats in Scotland as MSPs or within Scotland at UK level with or without the Union and those young voters and indeed most Scots will not even have the opportunity to vote for them – who exactly do they represent? That was and is the point. Not their right to speak. The criticism was of the programme, it’s initial billing and its subsequent presentation. All valid complaints.

I have said my piece. You may not agree with me but I’m entitled to say it just as Galloway and Farage have the RIGHT to speak – the question is is any of it relevant or does it bring anything interesting or progressive to the table?

Personally I don’t think they do and in my view they brought nothing to that show or to the wider debate.

  19. Hoopsmon,
