Lessons in team building from Switzerland and Cyprus

1100

Living so close to England it’s easy for us to get drawn into the ways and processes which prove effective south of the border.  SPL clubs all scout there, more often than not trying to pick up physically robust scraps discarded by the lower leagues, or troubled souls looking for a sixth chance.  Scottish clubs are full of players who have failed to make the grade in England.

When Motherwell were looking for a manager a year ago I heard one of their directors say they hoped to get someone with experience of the English lower leagues, as this has proven to be an effective place for them to network in the past.

Problems with the neighbours works both ways.  It’s too easy for English clubs to use the loose change part of their budget to scoop up anything that looks like promising talent from the SPL.  While most players will earn well in England, few enjoy the career progression they hoped for.

They do things differently elsewhere.  When was the last time teams from Cyprus or Switzerland badgered an English League Two side for their surplus talent?  Developing football teams is difficult but a good top level plan helps.  One of the most encouraging aspects of Celtic’s top level plan is that it meets criteria that match our place in the world.  Recruit talent from the right markets, at the right age and price.  Some money has been spent in England, but not much, and those who have arrived from there look decent value.

If Celtic are to match the recent Champions League achievements of Basel or Apoel Nicosia, players like Izaguirre, Kayal, Wanyama and Ki, who pitch up in Glasgow from what appears to be beyond the horizon of the English, will be crucial.  Just as those players at Basel and Apoel, they arrived here within an affordable budget and appear to have the talent required to compete at the level Celtic aspires to.

11 years ago we bought Chris Sutton from Chelsea against competition from other FA Premier League clubs.  He was soon joined by others at the peak of their ability and reputation, all relatively low-risk signings.  We had a few years in the sun but it was neither affordable nor sustainable.

We’ll know soon enough if the current crop of players trying to establish a reputation for themselves have what it takes to win the league and compete in Europe. Good top level plans can still fail in execution, but I’d rather this strategy than send my cash down the M6.

Could some of the ‘seekers of truth and justice (for all)’ on here please explain the difference of the two dives between Gary O,Connor of Hibs and Sone Aluko?

    Aluko’s was a dive in a dive?

For me it was a blatant cheat…

In normal circumstances when a penalty is awarded the ref will run to the touchline to avoid confrontation….If you watch the incident again you will see that said ref hangs his head low and dawdles to the touchline…Body language told me that he new it was never a penalty kick…

    Ok will watch again m8.

  4. what i cant understand is that they were offered a 2 game ban, decided to appeal, the decision is upheld and they get the 2 game ban, does that mean that everyone will appeal as nothing extra is added, seems to me everyone will appeal as the worst that will happen is the original decision upheld and no added penalties, surely this will just add to the red tame admin burden……add an extra game ban if the appeals fails…..surely…….makes sense tae me….

not seen the oconnor, but from your post you agree aluko dived, so why complaining about being punished for cheating when you accept he cheated, particularly when the 2 points he cheated you to will be the only reason you will remain top when we beat you on 28th, surely the 2 match ban worth that!

Difference between O’Connor and Aluko’s dives?

O’Connors only had the double twist and somersault whereas Aloko’s had the triple twist in the pike position.

    Unbelievable.

So there was contact – seems clear from the pictures – but it’s deemed to be insufficient to cause him to lose his balance.

On that criteria Nakamura would have been done for every foul he got awarded!!!!

So will this new found drive to eliminate “cheating” from the game now look at every foul to see if there was sufficent contact to justify the player going down?

Who decides which “acts of simulation” should be investigated and which ignored?

Why was Samaras not investigated for deliberately misleading a referee – there was bugger all up with him and he was rolling around as if he’d been elbowed – surely that was a case, if ever there was one, for the compliance officer to investigate?

It’s just so obviously a complete stitch up it’s beyond words.

    we’re a complete soft touch. – fans and club/management.

people know they can throw whatever they want at us and we will provide little or no fightback.

for the size of support we have, we are an incredibly tame bunch.

we are all guilty of it -sitting on our hands – or at our keyboards, yet when it comes to a unified mobilisation or act of defiance we are a shambles.

we must be one of the most unorganised, disjointed fan groups in the whole of football – and everyone sees that whish is why they’ve been getting away with this pish for far too long now.

I long for the day when the Rangers support reignites the fire in its belly. We are far too obediant, meak, humble and apathetic. As long as this continues to be the case, we will be treated like we have been.

It’s our choice bears – stand up and start the fightback……….or continue as we are.

I am not paranoid, but there was an article in one of their fanzines about 20 years ago that said what they needed to do to get ‘equal’ treatment form the SFA was to get ‘their’ sort of people into positions of power in the SFA. I suspect that is what has happened.

It’s about a young Russian Jewish immigrant who arrives in Glasgow in 1911 and soon falls in love with Celtic. It’s not about Celtic, but lots of references and Patsy Gallagher is his favourite player.

I’ll be at the game on Saturday so could meet up beforehand.

  14. I’ve asked a question, but people are avoiding an answer.

    So I’ll frame it again.

2 incidents of diving in the penalty area, yes, I said diving, there is a case to answer for both players.

So, one gets off, one is found guilty, now was one more of a dive than the other one, or do you think O’Connor was not guilty?

Because I am struggling to understand both verdicts.

SFA should have charged both, surely, then it would give future charges and verdicts a template and some credibility.

Now we have chaos coming down the line.

Try to give me an answer without the accompanying guff, please, that is all I ask.

The compliance officer thought both O’Connor and your man cheated. The 3-man jury (different people on each occasion) came to a different verdict in O’Connor’s case and agreed with the compliance officer in Aluko’s case. What don’t you understand?

  17. tomtheleedstim on

Is it because the new, transparent SFA are sometimes acting in a way that one might almost call “fair” and that because of this you are in a state of confusion.

Don’t worry, you’ll get used to it.

The compliance officer thought both O’Connor and your man cheated. The 3-man jury (different people on each occasion) came to a different verdict in O’Connor’s case and agreed with the compliance officer in Aluko’s case. What don’t you understand?

    ——————————————–

Of course I get that, I know what happened, just wondering if anyone on here thinks the verdict leaves more questions than answers?

You tell us why you Think McGeadys was deserving of a ban given it didn’t gift Celtic 3 points?

  21. scotlands shame on

truth, I’ll answer your question if you do me a favour of answering mine.

havent seen oconnor one but if as you say he dived too then both bans should have been upheld, however if oconnors was as blatant a dive as alukos then they should have had ban extended due to a frivoloous appeal, i ma staggered so many gers up in arms about this (particularly using words corrupt from a very shaky moral hifgh ground), it was a blatant dive, he should be banned.

so i agree with you it seems strange that oconnor gets off but aluk doesnt, if as you say oconnors was such a blatant cheat as you say, but looking further into it just reaks of paranoia, these things even themselves out.

So my question, in fact here is 2 pick which one to answer.

do you agree you cheated a win against dunfermline and should only be 2 pts ahead.

does it concern you no audited accounts or agm in 2011, to use a follow follow term do you not think that seems corrupt?

  22. truth4767 @ 14.30

What questions? Like, will this deter Jelavic, Naismith, Aluko, Lafferty, etc. from diving in the future?

  23. Truth1690 – The compliance panel got O’Connor’s wrong and Aluko’s correct. End of story. What more do you want? O’Connor should have been banned and wasn’t. Aluko should have been banned and was.

Unless you are saying since the panel got it wrong once it means they now have to dismiss every single case of simulation brought to them by the compliance officer?

Your man got caught and done. Deal with it. You still have the 2 points you cheated out of the match so I can’t see why you are all moaning?

Two incidents were both viewed as dives by the SFA. Go this part?

The appeals were judged by different sets of people. Got this part?

One set of people judged Aluko to dive. Got this part?

The other set of people judged that O’Connor didn’t dive. Got that part?

In all of our opinions both dived. But justice only caught up with one of the cheats.

The minute you admit that your club benefited from cheating and that your player is a cheat is the moment that you can move forward and make yourself a better person. Until that moment you will stand around scratching your head about things you perceive as injustices when justice has been served in this case.

just thought where is the incentive for any club to accept the 1st decision when it wont get any worse by appealing, its a win win situation.

  26. Declan Is Neil Lennon 1888 Hates being 2nd on

as much as i am a big celtic man this truth4767 guy is talking sense. we need to pure take off the blinkers here. that decision is a joke. there is no way they can do aluko since oconnor got off. if that was a celtic player i would be raging if he was banned when the hibs guy got off. the sfa are not doing themselves any favours if they are trying to look fair with stuff like that going on.

diving happens. you just have to take it on the chin. part of the game. banning the boy is unfair it was only a wee tumble

I do hope that this poster has impeccable source within SFA.

    1. Wait to you see the O,Connor one, he took off from a forward position, both legs up in the air, swallow dive with a 4.5 forward roll but glad to see you think I have a point.

    2. No the match should not be replayed, the referee is always right even when he is wrong, or I’ll claim at least 2 Cup Finals against you bhoys to be given to us, you see , it just gets silly.

    3. Yes I am concerned, yes, there should be an AGM and 4. I don’t trust Whyte one litle bit.

    That will do for today

    Bye!

I could be wrong, but I think the appeal costs the appellant club a grand.

Not much to some, but a fortune to the Foe Malign.
