Lessons to learn from Pukki mistake

1527

Teemu Pukki’s permanent move to Brondby for a reported £500k is good business for a player who never came close to commanding a regular starting place at Celtic.  While we did well exiting him from Celtic Park but his arrival two years ago is worthy of review.

He came from Schalke as a 23-year-old, having been at Sevilla as a teenager and scoring slightly better than one in two in Finland.  Even his Schalke stats were decent, 8 goals in 7 starts and 30 appearances from the bench, which for a sparingly used young player is around the mark expected.  On paper, Teemu looked a good fit for us, so do we have anything to learn?

For a start, being able to score goals in the Bundesliga does not guarantee you will be able to translate this into an even better scoring rate in Scotland.  We have made similar mistakes when recruiting strikers from Spain in recent seasons.  For all our lack of financial clout, delivering in Scotland is not an easy task.

There is a whole world of potential issues around psychology, motivation and appetite, which I regularly hear cited about players from people in the game.  For the most part, I reckon these are excuses to bridge the unexplained gap between expectation and outcome.  You get the odd indulgent nutcase, but most players have an overwhelming sense of their need to maximise their commercial value by delivering on the park.  I suspect Teemu is no different.

Whatever the reason behind him not fitting at Celtic, the exercise cost us not only the £1.5m net loss on transfer fees, and wages paid, but more importantly the failure to kick on from reaching the last 16 of the Champions League in season 2012-13.

There’s a truth in the game which has stood the test of time: only people who watch a player week-in-week-out know his true value.  Schalke fans would have told us things about Teemu which we can tell others about John Guidetti.  John will pick up a club keen to exploit his untapped potential.  A year from now they will be a little wiser.

Our lesson: scouting is the only important part of recruitment, stats, references and YouTube clips don’t count.

Our friends at Magners have offered us two of the new Celtic away jerseys.  It’s another fantastic offer from Celtic’s main sponsor, my thanks to them.  In order to win, answer the following question:

Which team won this year’s Premiership Play-off final 6-1 on aggregate?  Put the answer in the SUBJECT line of your email to celticquicknews@gmail.com

Competition closes at midnight TONIGHT, so get busy, these are two great prizes and there’s less than a 12 hour window to win them.

And………….. while you’re entering, you might want to kick a pound or two towards our Marys’ Meals Malawi school kitchen appeal.  Thank you.

And #2, if you enter, check your inbox for a response over the weekend.  There’s a home shirt unclaimed from a similar competition last month!

Good to read your discussion with Lennon n Mc Mjallby, a genuinely good debate excellently articulated.

However I must disagree with you about modern day scientists and 2000 year old tent dwellers.

In 2000 years time I think folk will still be fascinated and intrigued by the wisdom emanating from the New Testament while chortling down their sleeves about the no doubt wonderful endeavour but ultimately foolhardy notions of our Scientists.

To give you an example, one I heard on the radio not so long ago.

For centuries humanity has been obsessed with the healing of humanity. When science got hold of the Medical profession in the 20th Century we simply wanted to cure.

Thought it was an excellent point and one the 2000 year old tent dwellers might be inclined to agree with.

My opinion, we are treated like automatons – cured to keep us useful to society.

Where we should be treated like human beings. Mind, body and soul.

Nobody would pretend that Islam is fair in its treatment of women, or that Hinduism is not class-ridden, or that every Religion, particularly those with wierder sub-sects, do not have big problems. But are you seriously saying you have never heard denunciation of practices such as forced marriages, and genital mutilation from western liberals and feminists? If you say yes to that, I think you have been ignoring all reports of it or they do not get reported in the media circles you consume. It is dead easy to disprove that there is nothing being done or said. The following links took two minutes research. I did find a lot of tea party and right wing blogger sites advancing the same argument. Those least informed and least interested about other cultures seem to be more adamant and strident about advancing the view that “If I don’t know about it or have never had it brought to my attention, then it doesn’t exist”

I must admit, there does appear to be more of a point to this one, though again most of the instances I found were of the same right wing sites and blogs (who have no tolerance themselves of Gay Rights) decrying the Gay movement for not calling out Islam. I did find it hard to find contrary evidence readily available here but I did find these:-

    LGBT protest Sultan of Brunei

“I feel we are bending over backwards to accommodate attitudes and behaviour which we would find intolerable among members of a different religion.”

There is a lot of confusion about what we want to protest about on Islamic influence. The stuff about treatment of women and LGBT issues should be the easier stuff around which we can agree. Instead we find the stupid right protesting about their different clothes and the smell of their cooking, but, as I said at the start, there is no shortage of protest against genital mutilation and forced marriage. We even get to pass laws against them and have successfully prosecuted. It really would be nice to believe that most of those calling out the liberals and the left for their failure to call out Islam, were themselves actually committed to Gender equality and LGBT rights but I have my doubts.

RWE/Quonno … I think the whole receivership thing is such a scam …. they are supposed to be impartial, but, in my experience, favour (i) themselves and their fees, and (ii) those that routinely appoint them (usually, the banks) …. and, at least in Canada, their conduct usually just gets rubber-stamped by the courts, and they charge people ridiculous amounts for it!….. I did an appeal recently about reducing their fees, which we won …. so I am not the Recevers’ favourite at the moment! ….

Folks on here have just gotten fed up with it all, particularly as the media and the establishment appear to do all they can to airbrush away the sins and the sinners.

No wish to offend any politically sensitive bods but since THEY were considered to be the quintessentially Scottish club, synonymous with the “real” Scotland then it came as no surprise to hear Scottish politicians fall over themselves trying to pander to the blue demographic in 2012.
