  1. The “up the ra bitter enders”

Like those put on the blanket by Merlyn Rees

    Labour sec in Mid 70s

Such a misread of history, selective and fills the amnesia criteria

  2. Chapters dear boy — chapters.

Mid 70’s — RA ultras wanted to win the war not social justice.

They took their lead from the Loyalist strike — muscle trumps brains.

The hunger strike was a local action — the high heid yins outside the wire didn’t want it.

Again revolutionary violence from a small minority sets the agenda.

    Just like 1915/1916.

70’s — Blood feud angle was turned up to the max.

6 county population was sick of the wanton violence.

Just not mature enough / sophisticated enough to follow it up.

RA bitter enders = early 60’s failures.

RA in the 50’s was an Ealing Comedy style staple.

  3. Parkhead / Burnley….

I live in Ireland and while I tend to agree with ye on this, I’d also add that I have come across a lot of the opposite opinion. The state celebrates the efforts of those who fought for Independence and the writer of the song Derek? Warfield…was on RTE 2 and Newstalk stating that he wrote the song with that in mind too……. after seeing a graffiti’d wall with the the UP The Ra line he incorporated that into the song. He also made a good point to the rather po-faced RTE commentator that it was everyones right to like or not like some things. Theres plenty of British cultural stimuli that is not liked too, The Poppy, Oranj walks etc etc. but the appetite for confronting it doesn’t seem to be as keen??? That said, I would avoid the songs in most football situations but I’d support anyone’s right to do so – even if to an extent it upset me , in some way.

As Burnley 78 said last night, I wish those belting out their songbook (we even had a rendition of Roamin’ in the gloamin yesterday) would visit Ireland and see that people there have moved on.

I was talking to a nun recently, who actually lives in the Republic. She was telling me that their girls’ team who had chanted for the IRA were being roundly condemned there.
