Lustig, Samaras and problems after World Cup 98

1000

We’ll all be supporting Mikael Lustig and Georgios Samaras as Sweden and Greece attempt to qualify for the World Cup tonight but the prospect of Lustig, Samaras, Izaguirre, Ambrose, Forster and possibly van Dijk not having a break until July, days before the Champions League bandwagon starts rolling again, is unappetising.

Celtic contributed more players to the 1998 World Cup than any other team.  Perhaps as a consequence, we started the new season in third gear, unable to string two league wins together until thumping five goals past a now defunct outfit.  A Perfect Day.

Georgios, Mikael, Emilio and Efe are hugely important players to Celtic.  They are also players we have an excellent chance of retaining, which in some respects makes it even more important that they are ready for action early than those like Fraser, who until he signs his new contract we can be less sure of retaining.

Best of luck to Greece and Sweden tonight, but if your guys return home disappointed there will be compensations.

Ross County have won the respect of many, and rightly so, for building a successful football club from little more than sticky backed tape and empty washing up bottles, but one of their key achievers, manager Derek Adams, has to be one of the most ungracious people in the top fight game, a fact now being picked up in the wider media.

It is unfathomable if this trait is a fundamental aspect of the club’s success.  The clichéd football manager is an unapproachable tyrant but surely there’s more to it than that?

I’ve heard a good few footballers tell their tales of drama, they all have them, even the quiet ones, but it is an objective fact that Frank McAvennie has more stunning stories than anyone in the game.  I’ve heard him tell some publicly, and then listened to the really incredible stuff privately.

The Untold Truth with Frank McAvennie, is at Victoria’s Night Club this Saturday 23rd.  Doors open at 7pm for a three course meal, entertainment and Frankie recounting his stories.  There will also be a sporting auction and a Q&A session.  Book at www.franktalks.co.uk

  1. Does this complaint from Sevco re our CEO mean he will be put under pressure to resign (position unattenable) from the SFA?

What would our reaction be if Campbell Ogilvie was seen to be the driving force behind calls for Peter to resign?

If he does have to resign, in what way would it be harmful to Celtic?

    Thoughts anyone?

  2. ACGR yeah just saw it will resend the info you require. What time you in your cafe? May pop in and say hello. Hail Hail Hebcelt

Gretnabhoy- Houstons in Dumfries are the ones with the big reputation [ prize winning haggis etc] but I think they are over rated.

Johnstone the butchers in Annan are tip top.

Their black pudding is pure ambrosia.

  4. Tom McLaughlin

In the statement put out there was in it a few words that thanked folk who were not signatories but supported in other ways.

The statement came as a result of those who had signed asking for clarification, so was aimed mainly at them, but everybody who took part in the debate, even if they were not in favour, still contributed to forming a resolution that passed muster.

This Res was a pioneer in many ways. It did not come from an organised Celtic group ( in fact organised is the last word that could be used) .

It was not voted against because it had a valid point, used a valid route ( which I think was the thrust of ACGR’s point) and it responded to reason at all stages of its development including after feedback came from Celtic on what the SFA’s position was.

In that respect it shows that reason and how to pursue it is ultimately how to make those running clubs and running the game accountable to the supporters of those clubs.

We now know that the licence was granted within the law but are not satisfied on monitoring thereafter and if that turns out to be technically within the law then we can still ask how that law saw Sherriff Officers call to collect a tax bill yet still argue under the football law that it was not an overdue payable.

So even if Celtic were not denied a place in the CL it will still have been a worthwhile exercise over a variety of fronts as the SFA are asked to explain how they monitered the process after 30th June in light of information suggesting they failed to do so diligently.

Our game is very badly served by its governers who forget their ultimate responsibility is to serve, a prevelant form of amnesia found in most authorities.

So just to make the point : everybody played a part in trying to change the game, even those who thought the Res a bad idea (and if you want an explanation for that notion have a read at The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom) and to make it clear the thank you in the statement goes to all as far as I see things.

Yes it was great to meet you (all those years ago) and I did appreciate the lifts.

Problem just now is I normally work (for myself) Saturday morning, which can spill over into the afternoon. So canny be sure of getting away at a particular time.

I don’t go to games on a Sunday as need time with the family.

So, currently get to a handful of games a season.

However, I have met loads of CQN Bampots including a crowd of legends, last Saturday.

  10. Huns better be carefull what they wish for, they may not like the answer they will get from the SFA, firstly what goes on at a private AGM is SFA to do with anyone outside that meeting, it’s the MSM who are pushing it and it’s nothing to do with them either, there are things that where said and voted on at the meeting I didn’t go along with, a lady asked a question, the question was answered jokingly, I know it was a joke being made, Hugh Keevens was not at the meeting so why is he and representatives of Sevco/Sevco Scotland/RIFC/ taking anything that was said at a CFC AGM, to be out of order, I was there I liked the joke, let’s see if the MSM get an invi. To the panto on Dec. the 19th.

    ************************ DAM JUSTICE **********************

Following on from previous posts by Hamiltontim and CRC, I’d like to remind you about the Dam Justice bucket collection before the Aberdeen game this Saturday.

We desperately need volunteers to give up a couple of hours of their time to help raise funds for the ten innocent supporters severely affected by the events in Amsterdam. The money raised in the bucket collection will be paid into the FAC legal defence fund to help support the fans and their families.

I can’t state strongly enough how much your fellow Celtic fans need your help at this time.

Two of the fans have been instructed to return to Amsterdam in January, two are still being held in custody and the other six will be travelling back today to face court appearances tomorrow.

There is a distinct possibility that the Prosecution will ask that all eight Celtic fans be held on remand until January. Obviously, this would be a disaster for all concerned, with huge knock-on into their personal lives.

CQN has an outstanding record in helping worthwhile causes and from first hand experience, I’ve seen this in action at previous bucket collections and fundraisers. BRTH’s excellent article in the current CQN Magazine helps to dispel the old media myth that our fans were to blame for what happened and also serves to highlight the sense of injustice.

Bearing in mind the demographic of this blog, it’s important to point out that one of the fans arrested is a 49 year-old who went over to Amsterdam for the game with his wife. She was left petrified when he was “scooped up” by the Dutch police in the square.

There’s also the case of the 46 year-old who had his leg broken by a police van.

Either of these lads could have been CQNers! The young bhoys who have been beaten and charged could have been your sons or relations.

I know it’s short notice, but all we’re asking for is about 2 hours of your time to man the buckets at the Celtic Park turnstiles this Saturday. For once, skip the pre-match pint or visit to the lounges and help some Celtic families who are going through a terrible ordeal.

Please e-mail Dambhoys8@yahoo.co.uk and register your details. We’ll then get back to you with the relevant information.

If you can’t help with the buckets, then please donate to the legal defence fund, see below:

    1. Pay money into the FAC account via your bank or by electronic transfer:

Account Name: FAC Legal Defence Fund

    Sort Code: 83-21-27

    Account Number: 11119109

    2. Pay by Paypal using the Donate button on the site of the Celtic Trust, The CSA or the Green Brigade, however if you use this method please make sure you make it clear that the money is a donation and it is for the Amsterdam Fund. This money will be transferred to the FAC account.

    Many thanks for your time.

Must admit that I misuse the word ‘peruse’ but won’t now. The misuse of ‘literally’ and ‘decimate’ annoys me though I’d concede that the meaning of the latter has now effectively changed into something else in the way that ‘terrific’ and ‘fantastic’ have.

As for the intellectual Rangers fan- don’t know if said intellectual is a ‘proddy’ or not. But they do write ‘pish’. Not literally though

So who f***ed the old Hun Chicken the most. Without a doubt twas Craigy. Therefore the present incarnation in all probability belongs to our hero.

Homlbert Fridjohnsson first got to hear of the famous Glasgow Celtic the day he took his young nephew fishing.

UNfortunately the young lad managed to hook himself through the thumb, but Antony Stokes, who happened to be in the area investigating reorts of increased seismic activity on Eyjafjallajökull, quickly and skilfully removed the barb using his trusty Swiss Republican Army Knife.

‘I hope you are practising sustainable fishing’ said the bold Anto’ I practice sustainable goal netting; if I took every chance that was handed to me there would be no goals left’.

Never mind about chickens and eggs, Trigger’s shovel is the best analogy of the sevco model.

Like Trigger,in the face of all evidence to the contrary, because the sevvies think of their club as the same it becomes the same in their warped version of reality.
