Lustig, Samaras and problems after World Cup 98

1000

We’ll all be supporting Mikael Lustig and Georgios Samaras as Sweden and Greece attempt to qualify for the World Cup tonight but the prospect of Lustig, Samaras, Izaguirre, Ambrose, Forster and possibly van Dijk not having a break until July, days before the Champions League bandwagon starts rolling again, is unappetising.

Celtic contributed more players to the 1998 World Cup than any other team.  Perhaps as a consequence, we started the new season in third gear, unable to string two league wins together until thumping five goals past a now defunct outfit.  A Perfect Day.

Georgios, Mikael, Emilio and Efe are hugely important players to Celtic.  They are also players we have an excellent chance of retaining, which in some respects makes it even more important that they are ready for action early than those like Fraser, who until he signs his new contract we can be less sure of retaining.

Best of luck to Greece and Sweden tonight, but if your guys return home disappointed there will be compensations.

Ross County have won the respect of many, and rightly so, for building a successful football club from little more than sticky backed tape and empty washing up bottles, but one of their key achievers, manager Derek Adams, has to be one of the most ungracious people in the top fight game, a fact now being picked up in the wider media.

It is unfathomable if this trait is a fundamental aspect of the club’s success.  The clichéd football manager is an unapproachable tyrant but surely there’s more to it than that?

I’ve heard a good few footballers tell their tales of drama, they all have them, even the quiet ones, but it is an objective fact that Frank McAvennie has more stunning stories than anyone in the game.  I’ve heard him tell some publicly, and then listened to the really incredible stuff privately.

The Untold Truth with Frank McAvennie, is at Victoria’s Night Club this Saturday 23rd.  Doors open at 7pm for a three course meal, entertainment and Frankie recounting his stories.  There will also be a sporting auction and a Q&A session.  Book at www.franktalks.co.uk

  1. Maybe that Kirk Broadhoof can do us all a favour.

He should take the Sevco egg and stick it in his microwave…

  2. Alasdair,

Thanks for the reply and I’m glad you didn’t take offence at my post – I’ve never tried Harris Lamb but I want to now.

Nan MacLean’s, the butcher’s on Tiree, has closed now unfortunately. A row of buildings where the animals went in one end and the shop was at the other end…

Yes, there are an awful lot of good musicians on Tiree – we’ve been lucky enough to a few parties with Trail West playing. Unfortunately, I can’t claim any affinitycredit as I was an incomer to the island (not as bad as it sounds, actually).

  3. Tom,

I could be making that mistake, we can get everything here except the skwerr, I was back home for 12 days last year and had much too much skwerr, the cholesterol was up from about 4 to past 7.5, need a couple of years of that stuff before I have another fill!

I aint changing my moniker based on an STV report FFS. The proof of the puddin is in the fry up. However, you’ve certainly opened my mind to the global black pudin debate. I’ll try harder to more tolerant to pudins from other areas.

  13. Seen a few guys earlier on in the thread speak about Bobby Murdoch , I had the absolute pleasure of meeting him and chatting to him one to one for over 30 mins (passed bye in a heartbeat) I worked in the building trade plying my trade as a joiner on a job in Rutherglen while Stonelaw high School was being built around 97, Bobby came over to me to enquire where a fella some from Glasgow may know, A Billy Clinton (Non U.S President lol)??? I believe he drank in Bairds Bar? Would be good if any of you’s know him as he was a good guy/tim , Any how being only 19ish at the time I never had the pleasure of seeing Bobby in the flesh however my dad loved him and was easily in my dads top 3 of all time, my dad used to tell me of stories of Bobby arriving early for games just so he could sit in the dressing room wearing the hoops with pride! Bobby was so humble while chatting to him it was hard to believe he had graced so many stadiums and touched so many with his fantastic play! This was at a time when we were heading to Anfield after drawing 2-2 at Home and that Arse PVH had gone on strike claiming 7 grand was okay for a homeless guy (Bobby said to get PVH hunted)!! The passion Bobby spoke for Celtic made me realise how privileged these guys felt to wear the hoops! Anyhow my lunchtime was well over and the gaffer/hun was drawing the eyes so I made my apoligies to Bobby (I believe he would have stood there all day chatting) and told him I would fetch Billy for him , Bobby thanked me and we parted company, what a man, I then dug out any footage I could of the Legend and my old man was more than right ,what a football player, equally good with both feet, a creator and supplier of goals who knew were the goals were himself and hard as nails into the bargain, scary to think what Bobby would be worth in todays market. God Bless Bobby.

  14. Looking for some info.

At 8.32am today I posted some comments and included a load of quotes re.the demise of our friends.

“Your comment is awaiting moderation” came up and nothing since.

Can someone explain what this means and if my post has been pulled?

Try the WAGU fillet steak from the Grill on The Corner in Bath Street.

Feckin expensive but you will never have tasted anything like this if you haven’t tried it.

    SUBLIME.

  17. Perhaps the SFA should respond to Sevco by stating that they don’t really have time to deal with such poultry complaints.

Has Rory Bremner submitted a complaint yet after being compared to Sevco?

  19. I’m off into the Docs in 30 minutes to have a blood pressure monitor fitted. Having had normal blood pressure for 65 years, mine has suddenly soared. Asked the Doc what might have triggered it, he replied did you log on to CQN after the last Ajax game. Well OK the last part was a joke but Mineshafters be warned, don’t go upsetting corkcelt.

  20. TTT , suits.

    1. definition of heteronormative

    2. when DBBIA provides a link to an SFTB posting (i know it should be ‘a’ but it never reads or sounds right to me) , don’t follow it unless you want to enter a Lewis Carroll inspired world of psychotropic dysfunctionalism.

  21. Alisdair/Ryecatcher,

sorry guys, but been to and tried the steaks in both places you mention. Enjoyed them both. In fact going to The Butchershop for my work Christmas meal, before the copious beers!

Also had many, many lovely steaks in many, many different restaurants (no comments need be thrown in here by many of the CQN wits – you know who you are!), all over the place, however THE best steak I have ever had – and ive been on plenty occasions and the quality has never been anything other than superb – is El Chango Argentinian Steakhouse in Cologne!

If you ever visit Cologne, I urge you to go.

    You will NOT be disappointed!

  22. I have just read the SFTB post on p14.

The article itself I found interesting and plausible but I was left astounded of forehead that such an informed author could come to such a conclusion.

Surely he can see that the argument he promotes is precisely what Sevco fans are doing ie pretend Rangers are still the same club and it will become so.

Let me add that the tone of the piece was far above the norm for Follow Follow etc

  23. Interestingly the dates match.

Perhaps the SFA/Vincent Lunny should take a page out of the Cleveland Browns book and reply as follows ?
