Marching Newco into the Sea one insolvency at a time

835

‘Starve your club of money until I get what I want’ is just about the measure of Glib and Shameless’ statement yesterday.  No one at the SFA, SPFL, the Glasgow City Council, the Co-op/Vatican Bank or Celtic could do as much damage to the Fledgling Rangers as Dave King’s pronouncement.

These people have taken so many wrong turns in this episode it is like they are being operated by a compulsive Karmic puppeteer.  There is a time for withholding ticket sales, Celtic fans did it 20 years ago next month, but Celtic fans had a plan, grassroots support, investors on hand, unencumbered by Fit and Proper concerns, or the law against directors of a liquidated business working in a company using the same or similar name.

Most importantly the Celtic ‘old board’ included some, like Kevin Kelly, who was committed to change, while even the hold-outs were died-in-the-wool Celtic men, if clearly misguided.  None of the decision makers would ever consider razing the stadium.

Fledgling Rangers are at the mercy of hedge funds, some spivs and a couple of ‘Rangers’ men, who must be increasingly frustrated at the attempts of others to usurp what they legitimately bought and paid for.

Before stepping off the ledge – and make no mistake, stopping fans from buying season tickets is the only way to kill not just a club, but any successor clubs – you need to be sure you are in a position to cut a deal, and that you have the cash to make it all possible.  If you don’t have a watertight plan, you are working towards the end of your football club and its dilapidated remains.

I would be utterly amazed if the Easdales or Laxey Partners submit to this Glib and Shameless series of demands.  If they do, I have seriously misread them.

King was on the oldco board when they walked slowly to the gallows, all for the want of the kind of money he now says is needed to make Newco competitive with Celtic.  His chance to bang the populist drum and raise some cash was in the years before the club, stadium, stock and bike were sold for a combined total of £1.

It makes you wonder if there is a plan to march the entire club, and all its symbolism, into the sea, before picking up the driftwood after another liquidation.  For a fan of the club that would be horrendous, but think of the rich pickings available to whoever can grab the assets.

This is high stakes poker, but those forcing the issue don’t have any skin in the game.  Even if the whole thing is washed away in the storms, they will avoid most of the blame.

Delighted to read Fergus McCann on the club site this morning:

“I am very proud when I see Celtic’s progress, its status in Scotland, and its worldwide reputation. Especially when I see the great work of Celtic FC Foundation carrying on the legacy of Brother Walfrid.”

Despite the perspective that the events of 2012 gave us I still meet people who just don’t get what he did for Celtic.  No football fan is under any obligation to worry about their club’s finances but the man at the top is, and when our top man wore a bunnet, our transformation was outstanding.

There is a little over two weeks to go before the CQteN St Patrick’s Night Dinner on Friday, 14 March, at the Kerrydale Suite, Celtic Park.  The beneficiary of  the night will be Kholoni Primary School, Malawi, where we will fund Mary’s Meals to build a kitchen for 1200 kids who currently don’t have meal facilities.

We have received some incredible assistance already (more on what happened in Germany and Belgium when I get the next stage of the development ready), but you can get involved by ordering a personalised beanie hat, with your name on one side and CQN on the other.

Hats cost £15 each and if you order before 7 March you can collect yours at the CQteN Dinner.  If you’re not attending the dinner (and why not?) the £15 will cover postage and packaging.  If you ordered a Virtual Ticket, you’re personalised hat is part of your package.  All profits go to the school kitchen.

Take a look at the front and back of the hats.  To order, email hatfrompat@celticquicknews.co.uk with name, whether you are attending CQteN and address if not, and I’ll get your message to Pat.

  1. Croppybhoy…

You are entitled to your opinion mate,it’s a blog and I will always defend your right to articulate and express said opinion.

I think you are wrong on the crucial things though.

Tommy Burns would have been a manager, who stopped even 8 , if properly backed by the Bunnet.

Paul McStay would have been a marvellous sweeper if wrapped in cotton wool and deployed in big games only…10-15 a season perhaps. He showed this v Huns in Scottish Cup 1997.

He said in the interview he wanted to play on for at least one season. The fact he was considering another club at this point, because of McCann, speaks volumes of how acrimonious the Maestro felt at the time. Will post the full interview if you want to read it?

Will post the full interview if you want to read it?

    No don’t.

For some reason you always seem to want to be controversial, why is that ?

  3. Funny now time plays tricks with the mind.

The commitment to our cause emotionally, psychologically and physically by Tommy Burns and Paul McStay is beyond reproach however they play football for money and we pay to watch football…….they see it all a bit differently.

They were both great servants to the cause of CFC and were paid what would be the going rate at the time I imagine and getting to live the dream also.

At the latter end of McStay’s career he was carrying a persistent ankle problem while Burns was the manager. Burns tried to get McStay a 3 year contract I think while Fergus, realising the ramifications of the injury( reduced player productivity) offered a “play as you go” type contract which may possibly have caused the ensuing rancour……all this from the memory of course.

The upshot was McCann thought Burns was trying to put one over him with the McStay contract according to MSM at the time.

Again looking back over youtube clips its funny how time plays tricks with the mind.

I now think Burns was a better player than I thought at the time.

McStay was very very good in a not so good Celtic team probably around the same level as Petrov but not as physical.

Its all about opinions of course……..

  4. BigCupwinners….

Having an opinion does not mean controversial?

    All about perception mate.

I read lots of things and views that I disagree with on here and in life in general.

Doesn’t mean something is wrong if you disagree with it.

  5. Jude

The player was PMcS – TB and HK got together to put pressure on the now saintly Bunnet to give him a deal deal -despite what Rye might think it was not a pay as you play type contract they were looking for!

    Rye

Sorry to disagree but TB had plenty of support from the Bunnet

Perhaps you are forgetting disasters like RRFC at Ibrox in the LCF or the two disasters against lower league Falkirk in the SCSF ?

Games where we had upteen forwards on the park but found it impossible to defend a one goal lead!!!

Sorry for the rant but the 1990s were a pretty bleak time for Tims and too many seem to think that it was all the fault of Fergus

TB a bit like NFL was too young when he got the job and never learned from his mistakes

Ask yourself who was his last signing?

In all his time he never sorted the defence

Wim came in and that was his first priority – he then sorted the middle of the park

TB always thought another forward would solve the problem

  6. I raised this issue before but it was taken rather dismissively.

It is however a serious point.

Whilst the conjecture is doing the rounds about new/old club going into admin 1 or 2, suffering points deduction accordingly, I believe the real issue is will Sevco be able to fulfill their fixtures for the season?

Previously this point was dismissed given the fact that they can simply turn out their kiddie squad, even if they take a pasting.

The wages of the players taking the field is not the issue, the issue is whether they are able to fund hosting their fixtures.

I have no idea how much it costs to host the mass hordes of zombies for any given fixture but I am pretty sure it ain’t cheap. The power bill alone must be huge. How much does it cost all up?

If, as PMGB is posting, the Sevconian die-rectors are already stumping up their own money to keep the lights on, are they prepared to keep doing so for the remainder of the season?

They could, of course, play the fixtures behind locked doors. How would the fans react to this, especially when they have a legal right to witness the spectacle?

How would the SFA and other clubs react if Sevco did turn out their kiddie team?

Isn’t there some rule somewhere that they are required to field a team taken from their top level squad?

How will clubs who have lost to Sevco feel about this when other clubs get to play against the kiddies?

If they stop paying their players, the SFA will have to act and given their previous actions against the mini-huns the SFA will have to take punitive action.

And so I ask again, are Sevco in danger of not fulfilling their fixtures?

What does happen if they have totally run out of cash?

Think I’ve got a nice combination of good questions this week.

Funny last week……when Kayal33 had 100% then misspelt liquidate ! He has fantastic knowledge about our club.

  12. Just a wee clarification re start time for CQTEN. We organised for the doors to open a half hour earlier at 6.30pm but 7pm is still the start time. Hope that hasn’t caused too much confusion! Just thought the extra half hour would suit some early birds!

Re your quiz (the cheek of me as I rarely take part) you could simply pose your questions at set times and allow say 10 minutes for answers. All responses show the time sent. So for example, post Q1 at 9.00, Q2 at 9.10, etc. Any answers for Q1 have to appear before you ask Q2, any for Q2 before you ask Q3 etc.

Or is this starting to make it a bit more serious and competitive than it’s meant to be?

    Back to lurking…

  17. Big Cupwinners…..

Would be a great quiz if you did that format where you give the answer to the last Question and not the current one.

Could throw up some hilarious answers and imagery.

One to think about in future maybe?

Or will I get my jacket?

That is not what I meant; you knew that though.

You have been posting about Fergus McCann for the last few weeks. We all get he wasn’t everyone’s ideal Celtic Legend. But the powerbase ie the 60,000 capacity wonder he built not only dominates Glasgow’s skyline it is the foundation for our success since.

When you are back up in March drive up the new Clyde Gateway road to see it at it’s best.

But opinions are one thing, there has been some posts bordering on the malevolent tonight ? Stuff about Tommy Burns and Paul McStay !

Some should learn to keep perverse opinions to themselves and that is my opinion………
