Matthews master of discipline

1000

Few Celtic players have glided through four seasons with scarcely a critical comment directed his way but Adam Matthews can make this claim.  I didn’t expect him to make it as a first team player as a 19-year-old when he arrived from Cardiff City, but he so comprehensively made the position his own, you’ll struggle to name the two right backs at the club when Adam arrived………….?

The limiting factor in his Celtic career arrived in the form of a tall Swede.  Mikael Lustig has had plenty of injury problems but when fit, he’s first choice, with Adam playing backup.

Adam’s most memorable performance came against Barcelona in that game.  With Lustig at right back and Emilio Izaguirre unavailable, Adam was asked to play left back.  Tony Watt and Victor grabbed the headlines that night but Adam’s performance was remarkable.

He didn’t miss an angle all night, no matter how fast Barca pinged the ball, Adam was there.  We faced so many balls on the wing that night but the discipline in defence was remarkable.  He was clearly asked to give the Barca players space outside the box and drop to the 18 yard line, I remember yelling “Close him down” all night, but Neil Lennon had done his homework, the tactics were sound.  That game is recalled so often, for so many great reasons, but while the tactical discipline deployed was not as sexy as the goals or the atmosphere, it was genuinely world class.  We analyse games through different perspectives: when Celtic win like that all you hear about is the atmosphere, but if a German team had won that way, UK pundits would wax lyrical about their discipline.  Adam was a big part of that success, and if he goes to Sunderland, he’ll flourish.

Those two right backs were Mark Wilson and shampoo hero Cha Du-Ri, b.t.w.  But you knew that anyway, didn’t you?  If you can remember the left back we signed that summer you’re doing very well.  So many miss the target for every Adam Matthews.

Well done to Celtic, who have improved the look of two stadiums this week.

Never knew you cared for religion and now with all your pious Christian posts how do you reconcile those with your vitriolic attacks of old against the Irish and Neil Lennon in particular? If I recall rightly, and I’m positive I do, you used to revel in calling for the head of Neil Lennon on a plate.

Don’t mean to be rude, just being honest, but there is something very false about you. (just saying like, no offence intended) Having said that on here, I’m going to be out Gatton way next Wednesday, why don’t we meet up for that beer we used to talk about. I’ll even take you to the Pink Palace that you didn’t know.

NL was never a ‘Great’ manager. That is subjectivity for you. Objectively you could cite ‘stats’ otherwise, but when you compare to GS or MON, who played against a stronger opposition, he doesn’t figure.

    Against the irish?

News to me. I came to this country from Ireland.

There is something very confusing about you. No offence intended, just saying like.

Definition of Piety: dutiful devotion to God and observance of religious principles

Okay, I’ll happily go with that.

Your saying however is a tautology.

I’m careful who I mix with, so no thanks. No offence intended, just saying like.

    Honest.

A 92-year-old woman has run away from her nursing home – to be with her LOVER, 87.

In a story that shows the heart never stops dreaming of romance, the woman had been seeing the gentleman for some time, and he had visited her in the home.

There had been a search launched for the resident of Vilberg old people’s home in Eidsvold, north of Oslo in Norway after her walking frame was found abandoned in a car park.

But it was called off when they found out that she had driven to Stockholm in neighbouring Sweden to be with her Swedish boyfriend, who is 87.

It’s understood that the pair were in a relationship before she went into the home.

plans to return this weekend, has been very understanding about her decision.

Vilberg boss Janka Holstad told Eisvoll Ullensaker : “This is really a touching love story.

“Imagine not being able to go on a romantic holiday just because you’re past 90. The lady did nothing illegal, but she caused some uneasiness for us, because she never announced she was leaving.”

The resident’s romantic holiday has lasted for 10 days.

Her parents are said to be frantic;)

It’s nice that Mr Advocaat is bolstering the Celtic coffers.

    Great deal for us.

So that is your justification for all your hateful bile regards Neil Lennon on here… strange and very weak.

    I just won myself $100 I knew you’d never show, ever. I don’t wonder why….No offence, honest.

    Family and domestic obligations ,unfortunately.

    Actually,when I think about it…………fortunately.

Quite excited about our new season and have ,I hope, realistic expectations.

Particularly hoping that Rogic comes good.

Pre world cup,the Oz team were gathered in Sydney for the usual hoopla.

My lhad spotted Rogic and predictably yelled out “`Mon the Hoops” and was rewarded with a huge smile and wave.

So rewarding when kids of expat Tims “get” what you and I take for granted.

  10. Ohhhhhh thems out for their wee walk today will be soaked right through to there drawers, and the wind will be blowing them all over the place, send it down Lord, send it down.

  11. Bobby. A wee bit cold for cruise now. It’s winter. Sunny and 15deg

Indeed Owen Paul was a youth player with us and his Bro was a drummer with a well known scottish band. Can you guess :))?

Slan, its been many years since I read the bible. If homosexuality and gay marriage is so unchristian, could you remind what Jesus said on the subject?

    Thanks.

And btw, he had two dads and turned oot no bad.

    Just saying, like.

  13. Good morning friends.

This morning’s live report is from the middle of a torrential thunderstorm that’s passed over East Kilbride in the last half hour. Still teeming down and very windy. Could hardly be more different from yesterday’s sunshine. Mad. And why else would I be up at this time on a Saturday after a ‘night before’? Grrrrrrrr. ;-)

I don`t think he was suggesting clapping them in irons.

  15. Nags.

Richard Hughes really talking up his mount in the last race at Sandown, Silver Quay. He says he will drop it in, and will power up Sandown hill at finish. Quote.. ” best ride of the day..an each way will get a return”.

Currently 12/1 so if he is correct, a place will see you double your money and a win will get you a right few bob. That 12/1 won’t last…move now:-))

  16. Wakened at 5 due to the inclement weather, do not mean to tread on Jobo territory here, just wishing it had arrived about 4 hours later. Terrific noise and colour , the storm that is, here in darkest Lanarkshire. Later on, dreadful noise and stench as the Manky Mob go on tour, pity them.

Anyway, yesterday’s run was abandoned in favour of grass cutting duties at home and at parents, just means I will have to man up in the rain this morning or wimp out on the treadmill at gym…decisions, decisions..

We need a new midfield box to box player for us to go anywhere in the CL this season.

The focus of Peter Grant, the engine of Paul McStay, the grit of Roy Aitken, the bite of Bertie Auld, the vision of Henrik Larsson, the resolve of Tommy Burns, the inspiration of Stevie Chalmers, the passion of Neil Lennon.

    Not easy to find.

    We can but dream.

I would take a Wullie McStay or an Anton Rogan with three left feet over some of the prima-donnas we have paraded over the years.

I wonder if i’m alone in wishing that people would stop talking about religion on this site my understanding is that this is a blog for Celtic fans and that Celtic is an all inclusive club.I understand when some passes away that people offer up prayers ect. but other than on occasions such as that some posters come across as being very intolerant when they talk about this subject.
