Matthews master of discipline

1000

Few Celtic players have glided through four seasons with scarcely a critical comment directed his way but Adam Matthews can make this claim.  I didn’t expect him to make it as a first team player as a 19-year-old when he arrived from Cardiff City, but he so comprehensively made the position his own, you’ll struggle to name the two right backs at the club when Adam arrived………….?

The limiting factor in his Celtic career arrived in the form of a tall Swede.  Mikael Lustig has had plenty of injury problems but when fit, he’s first choice, with Adam playing backup.

Adam’s most memorable performance came against Barcelona in that game.  With Lustig at right back and Emilio Izaguirre unavailable, Adam was asked to play left back.  Tony Watt and Victor grabbed the headlines that night but Adam’s performance was remarkable.

He didn’t miss an angle all night, no matter how fast Barca pinged the ball, Adam was there.  We faced so many balls on the wing that night but the discipline in defence was remarkable.  He was clearly asked to give the Barca players space outside the box and drop to the 18 yard line, I remember yelling “Close him down” all night, but Neil Lennon had done his homework, the tactics were sound.  That game is recalled so often, for so many great reasons, but while the tactical discipline deployed was not as sexy as the goals or the atmosphere, it was genuinely world class.  We analyse games through different perspectives: when Celtic win like that all you hear about is the atmosphere, but if a German team had won that way, UK pundits would wax lyrical about their discipline.  Adam was a big part of that success, and if he goes to Sunderland, he’ll flourish.

Those two right backs were Mark Wilson and shampoo hero Cha Du-Ri, b.t.w.  But you knew that anyway, didn’t you?  If you can remember the left back we signed that summer you’re doing very well.  So many miss the target for every Adam Matthews.

Well done to Celtic, who have improved the look of two stadiums this week.

Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications (Scotland) Act 2012:

You read it ? If not, it’s here and well worth the read, sort of. It is a miasma, but when you plough through it you’ll be amazed at how poorly constructed the document actually is. A quick scan and you’ll wonder why it was created in the first place. You’ll see a number of flaws too:

It’s easy to conclude the act was created to target the Celtic support. Affirmation of that conclusion is available form the SNP’s Christine Graham on Youtube.

It’s telling that today we will see an officially endorsed march by many hell bent on espousing hatred on our streets.

Status of a song was mentioned earlier. Another similar crass error is “reasonable person”.

In practical terms that “reasonable person” is a police officer.

    Judge for yourself:

This act is unnecessary, unworkable and disproportionate.

    It kinda,works.

I’m beginning to sense the ‘superiority complex’ is just a very thin veneer over their deep seated insecurity.

However – our job is to help the scales fall from their eyes and let them see the people who have shafted them are the same people who shafted the rest of us. No more divide and rule.

I hold what may be classed as a very simplistic views on religion, and for the avoidance of doubt I class myself as a Roman Catholic albeit not a very good one.

Most religions can be compared to the people who founded them, human beings. In general they mirror humanity, they are in the main founded upon decent principles whereby people should treat others as they would wish to be treated themseves. I believe that the majority of humanity acts in this way. A.minority of humanity do not possess the gift of compassion and act accordingly.

Unfortnately religion is there to be hijacked by minority for the benefit of evil and I include people in positions of trust within my own religion in this.

Religion is a mirror image of its creators, humanity, and is therefore subject to humanities frailties.

I was brought up by good people who taught me right from wrong and who instilled in me the need to respect others and there beleifs, and to try and use the gift of compassion. I have to be honest and say that at times I have failed them but at least I can acknowledge when I did.

My parents would have brought me up in this manner whether I was Catholic, Protestant, Hindu or Muslim but I am grateful for the fact that the Catholic family underpins there teachings, I am sure the vast majority of decent Protestants, Hindus or Muslims feel the same.

  16. Not for a minute am I saying that Ciftci is the answer to all our prayers. He could be a roaring success,he could flop. What I find very strange is the comments from many on here.

We were delighted to get Boyata and Janko in.Two players the majority on here know nothing about.”Wonderful signings, good bit of business”.But with Ciftci,a guy we have seen give our team a real torrid time, along with other teams in the SPL,the response to his signing is very lukewarm,to say the least from many.

I think a wee bit of snobbery is afoot here.If we had signed Ciftci, from Galatasaray, without really knowing about him,we would be looking forward to seeing him in the hoops.Especially for just over £1 million.

Instead of the disappointment at the signing do you not think we should give the boy and RD the chance to prove he can do a job.Could be many with a few apologies to make.Same as they had to do with RD last season.Really cant understand why so many jump the gun,and are prepared to rubbish people without giving them a chance.

  17. Turkey…,

I’m concerned about his temperament I think this could be his biggest issue, pointless having a player that spends more time in the stand because he can’t control his temper.

  19. Turkeybhoy,

Very valid points, however I disagree with this statement…

“But with Ciftci,a guy we have seen give our team a real torrid time…”

It’s not what I’ve seen. And any time I’ve seen him show anything of note against us had been well outside the box and out wide. Not where I want to see a striker to do his stuff.

He isn’t a prolific goal scorer even against the mediocrity of the SPFL (25 league goals in 2 years).

It’s not that I don’t want him, I just don’t think he is what we need or is better than what we have.
