Matthews master of discipline

1000

Few Celtic players have glided through four seasons with scarcely a critical comment directed his way but Adam Matthews can make this claim.  I didn’t expect him to make it as a first team player as a 19-year-old when he arrived from Cardiff City, but he so comprehensively made the position his own, you’ll struggle to name the two right backs at the club when Adam arrived………….?

The limiting factor in his Celtic career arrived in the form of a tall Swede.  Mikael Lustig has had plenty of injury problems but when fit, he’s first choice, with Adam playing backup.

Adam’s most memorable performance came against Barcelona in that game.  With Lustig at right back and Emilio Izaguirre unavailable, Adam was asked to play left back.  Tony Watt and Victor grabbed the headlines that night but Adam’s performance was remarkable.

He didn’t miss an angle all night, no matter how fast Barca pinged the ball, Adam was there.  We faced so many balls on the wing that night but the discipline in defence was remarkable.  He was clearly asked to give the Barca players space outside the box and drop to the 18 yard line, I remember yelling “Close him down” all night, but Neil Lennon had done his homework, the tactics were sound.  That game is recalled so often, for so many great reasons, but while the tactical discipline deployed was not as sexy as the goals or the atmosphere, it was genuinely world class.  We analyse games through different perspectives: when Celtic win like that all you hear about is the atmosphere, but if a German team had won that way, UK pundits would wax lyrical about their discipline.  Adam was a big part of that success, and if he goes to Sunderland, he’ll flourish.

Those two right backs were Mark Wilson and shampoo hero Cha Du-Ri, b.t.w.  But you knew that anyway, didn’t you?  If you can remember the left back we signed that summer you’re doing very well.  So many miss the target for every Adam Matthews.

Well done to Celtic, who have improved the look of two stadiums this week.

if someone had said to me we could swap Adam Mathews for Ciftci I would have bit their hand off

Adam has played very little in last 12 months and we need to add to striker squad

But we need a proven goal scorer

Cracking thunderstorm too. But should be fine for the game.

Hope you all remember it’s a 1230 ko.

Agreed, mate. His scoring ratio doesn’t strike me as good enough for SYDNEYTIM.

Ciftci had scored one league goal before joining United. Makes Bangura look prolific.

Used to be a fan of Adam Matthews but he never regained any type of form since that wee bassa lasley dislocated his shoulder at Celtic park

I suffer atrial fibrillation. First strong attack in December last year. Now, when these attacks come very often, my heart settled at 45 bpm, sometimes going even below 40bpm. Big difference in efficiency between 70 bps and 45, and big change for the man who used to ride the bicicle regulaly etc. Thanks God I have excellent doctors in one of the best hospitals in Warsaw. I will have aditional treatment these weeks and operation in four weeks.

I tell you the story becouse my symptoms were similar to angina pectoris.

Matthews seems to avoid stick because of the Barca game, a bit like Neil Lennon.

Pity Matthews didn’t play that kind of game more often. His positioning last season was woeful and his tacking was weak. He is no loss.

  24. Just thinking about the wisdom of a three year plan.

Year one, Assemble a squad with a new manager that wins the championship at the first attempt.

Year two. Develop and improve the squad to beat everyone but celtic to finish second

Year three, keep hold of all your millions of pounds worth of stars, develop further and beat celtic to the title and then win through three qualifying rounds to get into champions league.

Sounds difficult enough even with the help of the men in black.

    I’ll watch with hilarity

At present our strikers are Griffiths and the rubber plant in the foyer ( or stokes and stephonivic). We need to add to the bench

I would rather have Citci on the bench than Mathews in the stand

Strikergate from PL and JP has to come to an end We need two goal scorers in the first 11 and citci is not one of them

But as a squad player ok

We must remember tho we sold hooper and with the cash bought Balde and the slowest player in the Shalke squad ( pukki )

Lawell must go along with park
