Few Celtic players have glided through four seasons with scarcely a critical comment directed his way but Adam Matthews can make this claim. I didn’t expect him to make it as a first team player as a 19-year-old when he arrived from Cardiff City, but he so comprehensively made the position his own, you’ll struggle to name the two right backs at the club when Adam arrived………….?
The limiting factor in his Celtic career arrived in the form of a tall Swede. Mikael Lustig has had plenty of injury problems but when fit, he’s first choice, with Adam playing backup.
Adam’s most memorable performance came against Barcelona in that game. With Lustig at right back and Emilio Izaguirre unavailable, Adam was asked to play left back. Tony Watt and Victor grabbed the headlines that night but Adam’s performance was remarkable.
He didn’t miss an angle all night, no matter how fast Barca pinged the ball, Adam was there. We faced so many balls on the wing that night but the discipline in defence was remarkable. He was clearly asked to give the Barca players space outside the box and drop to the 18 yard line, I remember yelling “Close him down” all night, but Neil Lennon had done his homework, the tactics were sound. That game is recalled so often, for so many great reasons, but while the tactical discipline deployed was not as sexy as the goals or the atmosphere, it was genuinely world class. We analyse games through different perspectives: when Celtic win like that all you hear about is the atmosphere, but if a German team had won that way, UK pundits would wax lyrical about their discipline. Adam was a big part of that success, and if he goes to Sunderland, he’ll flourish.
Those two right backs were Mark Wilson and shampoo hero Cha Du-Ri, b.t.w. But you knew that anyway, didn’t you? If you can remember the left back we signed that summer you’re doing very well. So many miss the target for every Adam Matthews.
Well done to Celtic, who have improved the look of two stadiums this week.

Burgas Hoops, weeman67,
Interesting reading weeman’s story.
I was telling my son what you both posted.
He has just left the Cardiovascular Research Bureau in UCC after seven years as a post doc researcher and is up to speed on matters cardiac, especially stent development.
He reckons that Cleveland is the top place for that kind of work and fair play to you, weeman, for getting treated there.
I know not everyone’s thing but St Brigid’s Way is a lovely trip.

Could they no just have got Boydychenko to jump up and down on it a few times?
Burgas, see if you can insist on an angiogram, a simple op that allows them to see the extent of the blockage ( as alluded to earlier by weeman ) and treat accordingly. Worth it, they may do an angioplasty ( stent insertion to blocked artery ) to clear the blockage and have you fitter than they huskies in no time.
Good luck but modern medicine today is magical.
Hail! Hail!

Since the season finished Zaluska, Baldé, Pukki, Tonev, Wakaso, Denaya, Guidetti, fridjonsson, Herron and Charmers have been sold/ released/ returned to their clubs. Mathews is apparently on way to sunderland. VVD to follow after C/L qualifiers have been negotiated.
youths players McMullan (St Mirren), McManus (Alloa), Duffy (Alloa) confirmed loan and Findlay on route for loan at Kilmarnock FC.
RD making some inroads now, think its a question of how long rather than when will McGeouch (22) McGregor (22) Boerrigter (28) Stokes (26) and Irvine (22) be punted!!!

I agree stephbhoy, and its only the 3rd of July. In all my years following Celtic, I can’t remember such an early decisive strategy. He seems a guy who knows exactly what he wants and is in a hell of a hurry to get there. As ever he will be judged on results and especially results in Europe.

Speak with the doctors Sir. If I’m not mistaken, ECG can’t confim or exclude angina. I had similar sympthoms for a few weeks. Echocardiography sugested it was angina problem.
I had Cardiac Catheterization on Tuesdsay. The doctors expected angina pectoris and were ready to make angioplasty in one go. Final diagnosis is different and I’m due to be back to the hospital in four weeks. I’m ten years younger.

Happy Birthday.

Now agree with those who have gone :-))
How much do you reckon we have knocked off the wage bill ? With 11 out ( not counting those out on loan) and 2 in
Incidentally I think about time we done as Ronny has said, smaller squad of hopefully Better quality
Hail,Hail
What surprises me about Stokes is if Ronny doesnt rate him why does he not make him a make weight in a transfer deal for a striker he does rate. H.H.
Tallybhoy
Currently on holiday in Lido di Camaiore….one alright storm just past!
Happy to see things shaping up for the new season.
All the best to Adam on his new venture. Hail Hail!
My take on the Virgil will he stay/go transfer saga is…
Play the qualifiers, if we get to the groups he stays till Xmas on the promise he’ll be sold for bids over £X amount.
Plays the qualifiers if we go out he’s sold straight away.

Maybe Ronny rates him !!!!!!!
hun skelper. I think you are right fella and we still need to find his replacement. H.H.
Well Joe, it ain’t that easy, there is no reason to expect that a team selling a striker we fancy would fancy Stokes as a replacement. Especially if it were a bigger or foreign team. The likes of Dundee United might fancy him but they could not afford his wages and Stokes himself mightn’t fancy a move to a smaller Club.
I think Ronny is waiting to confirm Ciftci signing, there could well be a deal done for Stokes but it won’t go through until new striker is in. The same as Matthews & Janko.
Interesting that neither Stokes or Matthews played against Den Bosch. Wouldn’t surprise me if Lenny came in for Stokes.

Your comment about Canamalar’s welcome to a new poster last night was hilarious.
As for the welcome……never before on CQN have I witnessed.
Totally out of order but it appealed to my sence of humour. HH
hun skelper. If Ronny rates him he has a funny way of showing it. H.H.
