There is a striking symmetry in the English Premier League. None of the 10 clubs in the top half has an English manager, whereas only two clubs in the bottom half of the table have non-English managers. For all its apparent self-importance, the English game is keen to learn from Europe.
The likes of Sam Allardyce, Steve Bruce and Roy Hodgson are still getting a gig, although I cannot understand why. Graham Potter took over at Premiership Brighton two years ago and has kept them there since. Sean Dyche also keeps Burnley away from the trapdoor.
The England national team has a native manager, although one who took over at top flight Middlesbrough before changing their status to a Championship club., his only prior managerial experience. The top English manager today is sitting at home on the south coast waiting for his next appointment.
News leaked that Eddie Howe spoke to Celtic four weeks ago. A week later his agent sent out the clarion call to prospective employers. Newcastle, Southampton and Crystal Palace will all remain in the top flight and could replace their manager, Everton, who Howe supports, may lose Carlo Ancelotti, despite his £12m salary.
You know the script, players, agents and even managers talk-the-talk but if they have a pen in their hand and are about to sign your contract when get a text message from a club paying £12m-a-year, they will want to check a few details over.
I know the managerial appointment is taking longer than Celtic wanted. “The clock is ticking” for a club with enormous rebuilding plans ahead. A desire to make the right appointment will soon conflict with a desire to make the appointment at a time that allows the new manager to make a success of the job.
The month of May is a hard deadline, candidates have been told it’s time to get off the pot. No deal is done, but there will hopefully not be long to wait.

Move your arse Eddie !
Arlene is the only British political leader with any interest in the working class.
Good article.
An honest appraisal of where we are.
Much prefer this candid assessment than the earlier ‘signing on1st June’ one
Would very much welcome the appointment of EH, though hope we have others irons in the fire (not meant as an unsubtle reference to west ham!)
Howe come?
The Big Chief says “HOWE” or something like that.

51% fan ownership is law in Germany I think? If so hasn’t hurt them very much.
——————————————-
I thought that too but I heard a German sports journalist say that 51% refers to voting rights, not necessarily ownership but in reality it all amounts to the same thing.
Who would win in a fight between wee Arlene Foster and an East German ‘Lady’ behemoth shot putter?
MCPHAIL BHOY, yeah its a wee bit confusing.
“The month of May is a hard deadline”
That deadline – is it the 1st or 31st May?
Fergus said way back in the day that “Celtic created CEO position to deflect criticism from the board.”
And here we are all these years later.
A RIFC player/employee shouting sectarian abuse? Pretty inaudible/inconclusive in my opinion.
But inaudible/inconclusive accusations of Morelos being racially abused by a fan at Celtic Park made the front pages after RIFC flagged it up!
Spot the difference?

Sad that we are being left dangling from, according to Paul candidates plural
Well ban the media then.
A bewildering amount of Political leaflets in the post this morning.
A bizarre amount of small parties with niche views and none of them have a chance.
what a waste of paper and ink.
That was for Bada Bing.
BTW – respect to the poster who provided the shareholding info in last thread.
It was more encouraging than I had expected.
It showed major shareholders owning c.75%
(can we assume the other c.25% belongs to “small shareholders” like us?)
It also showed that Celtic supporters Dermott Desmond, Chris Trainer and James Keane combined own more than 50%.
Maybe this 51% fan ownership idea (which I support) is achievable after all.
Hail hail

Won’t be before the next potential reversal at Stolen Stadium FC.
Frank Connor picked the Celtic side after we appointed Luigi Macari, Brian O’Neil scored a late winner against Rangers who played there long before we’d ever heard of a Sevco.

i wish we would try learn from.europe when it comes to buying players instead of just filling the squad and first team with scottish players

Based on voting share rights, the Resolutions in favour of the board are usually around 95%.
I take from that, that the small shareholders are around only 5%
Shares and PLC’s are they not capitalist masonic thingys?
An aspect sometimes overlooked though is the foreign owner aspect. The majority of manager jobs [in English top flight] go to foreign managers who generally are coming from a bigger club (even as reserve coach) and have established themselves as a great coach, or have won something that resonates with said foreign owner. They don’t see any English manager as being successful unless they have silverware in their history. Only Newcastle or Crystal Palace I reckon would look at Howe. The others have pitched themselves as big players and need headline grabbing manager.
Be surprised if Everton get rid of Ancelotti and if they do it won’t be to replace him with Eddie Howe. Don’t see Southampton making a change either. As for Newcastle and Palace – that would just give him what he had at Bournemouth – relegation battles.
Nagelsmann to Bayern – maybe explains why Marsch retreated back into his box after flirting with us.
Roma said to be in talks with Sarri. I’d be sounding out Fonseca. Might get a reprieve if they win the EL but I doubt it. We should have more than one target.
Second qualifying round of Champions League starts 20 July.
Work to do so earlier in May the better.
We, like everybody else, have to fill the squad with scottish/homebased players
Homegrown Player Rule is a rule for UEFA competitions that was first introduced in 2006–07 season and fully enforced beginning in the 2008–09 season. On top of a maximum 25 players for List A, clubs had to designate a minimum 8 players that were trained by clubs from the same national league, with 4 of them being from the club’s own youth system.[1] The rule in turn capped a maximum of 17 foreigners for the club in UEFA competitions.
The English Premier League enforced their own version beginning in 2010.[2]
Definition
UEFA defines locally-trained or ‘homegrown’ players as those who, regardless of their nationality, have been trained by their club or by another club in the same national association for at least three years between the ages of 15 and 21.[3]
What does it say about the broadcast media in Scotland that it takes a broadcast journalist based
in England to ask NS about the possibility of a Scotland / England border if indy2 happens?
Park the bus – totally agree, we should have been banning the placemen and liars from the media years ago HH
Its a bit like Phil Mac being based in Donegal before the Huns tax dodging could be revealed.
Bada yip!
Level-headed article on the variables involved in appointing a new manager these days, except of course if he’s a former manager who is out of work and having a shower.
I have no real feelings for anyone at the moment – when you have had Brendan Rodgers recently others pale in comparison.
Of course Howe may be an inspired choice and bring instantaneous success – we’ll see.
I am much more interested how we deal with the financing of the rebuild and how speedily it happens.
Most, I suppose, will look for us to be back on top next season with automatic Champions League qualification turning a £3m prize for winning the title into a £40m prize.
Is this realistic with a brand new management team and the number of ins and outs that look inevitable?
The Ibrox club look to be in a favourable position with regard to CL qualification in July/August. If they do qualify it will allow them to strengthen on the back of it for the season ahead. If that’s the case our task next season will become more difficult.
The next sixteen months will be more problematic & challenging on football & finance matters at Celtic than anything we have had to deal with in the last ten years.

Oh! Oh!
So in reality no further forward other than we know our candidates, I suppose that’s a combination of our place in the food chain and our super dooper board and ceo
If Celtic get Eddie Howe they deserve massive credit for their ambition after a year of pure negligence. It would guarantee nothing in terms of success, but the difference from this year would be that every effort had been made to maximise our prospects. Appointing then retaining Neil Lennon was the opposite of that.
However, we are out of time, so I completely agree. It’s now or never Eddie. If it’s never then the board can’t be criticised and we move on.
If PLC has put all their eggs in the Howe basket and it doesn’t happen
the media will delight in telling the guy who does become Celtic manager
that he wasn’t first choice.

What it says is that we have a cowed & compliant Scottish media snugly sitting the the SNPcult’s pocket. These people believe that indy is inevitable and want to be on the right side when it happens.
It chastens them to see the modern ‘father’ of the SNPcult, Alex Salmond – the person responsible for transforming it from a bunch of weekly ceilidh-dancers to power at Holyrood, stabbed in the back by this fanatical ‘#me too’ administration backed by a staunchly ‘native’ civil service – why then would anyone intent on earning a living within the Scottish media even consider ‘rocking the boat’?
The bottom line is that the days of talented Scottish journalists that actively pursued a story to a conclusion are, sadly over, it’s got nothing to do with what ever side of the political fence you inhabit. Generally a PA rep turns up asks banal questions and then it’s widely reported as fact with everyone else, as an example the John Beaton death threat made up stuff
Paul,
I am not sure what point you are making about top 10 clubs in England being keen to learn from Europe.
Ryan Mason is English. Brendan is from the Black North. David Moyes is Scottish.
My politics are my own, and because there is no preferred Sinn Fein candidate I am now swinging to vote SNP on both ballots, JHB well done with your persuasive thoughtful intelligent insightful arguments, you convinced me.
Well done.
