May deadline is time to get off the pot

There is a striking symmetry in the English Premier League.  None of the 10 clubs in the top half has an English manager, whereas only two clubs in the bottom half of the table have non-English managers.  For all its apparent self-importance, the English game is keen to learn from Europe.

The likes of Sam Allardyce, Steve Bruce and Roy Hodgson are still getting a gig, although I cannot understand why.  Graham Potter took over at Premiership Brighton two years ago and has kept them there since.  Sean Dyche also keeps Burnley away from the trapdoor.

The England national team has a native manager, although one who took over at top flight Middlesbrough before changing their status to a Championship club., his only prior managerial experience.  The top English manager today is sitting at home on the south coast waiting for his next appointment.

News leaked that Eddie Howe spoke to Celtic four weeks ago.  A week later his agent sent out the clarion call to prospective employers.  Newcastle, Southampton and Crystal Palace will all remain in the top flight and could replace their manager, Everton, who Howe supports, may lose Carlo Ancelotti, despite his £12m salary.

You know the script, players, agents and even managers talk-the-talk but if they have a pen in their hand and are about to sign your contract when get a text message from a club paying £12m-a-year, they will want to check a few details over.

I know the managerial appointment is taking longer than Celtic wanted.  “The clock is ticking” for a club with enormous rebuilding plans ahead.  A desire to make the right appointment will soon conflict with a desire to make the appointment at a time that allows the new manager to make a success of the job.

The month of May is a hard deadline, candidates have been told it’s time to get off the pot.  No deal is done, but there will hopefully not be long to wait.

  1. If John Kennedy is anywhere near Parkhead no one should buy a season ticket..an absolute joke . ..his brief spell in charge gas been shocking. Playing loan players and players who are leaving…standing in sideline arms folded .making same decisions as Neil Lennon .the comments after the game. That appear to show he was watt a completely different game

  2. COYBIG – the biggest Derby in years (in light of how this season has gone). That photo of the Celts celebrating is the attitude that must be brought to the game on Sunday. A real must win to set the whole tone for next year.

  3. G’day…

With tabloid rumours that JK may get the gig as Sporting Director, I looked up the job description online. Norwegian student put together a decent working remit, which included:

    – Support the Manager and the First Team

    – Have a good relationship with the owner (and every other employee)

    – Employ Head of departments

    – Create, implement, and oversee a clear playing philosophy across all teams. The academy teams will often have the same playing style as the first team

    – Develop and maintain an excellent scouting network

    – Be in charge of player-logistics (buy and sell in the transfer market)

    – Oversee the performance departments

    – Make sure academy players and teams have the necessary tools for maximum development.

Clearly a job for someone with developed business acumen AND a real feel for game style and strategy.

Surely John would be better served leaving the nest to forge his own creds as a manager in his own rights.

Leave the DoF or Sport Director to someone who can take a fresh look at our crumbling apparatus and make the necessary best practice fixes.

  4. I can only assume the JK for SD is putting a toe in the water by the board and of course using a board apologist site to promote it. Does anyone seriously think JK has any of the skills required for a job like that? Particularly since the club needs a complete rebuild? Does he have the contacts? Does he have the respect? Not in my opinion.

Someone already posted his record so far has been dreadful in terms of results and team selection, I am definitely in that camp.

I guess if there is overwhelming negative feedback the move will be cancelled.

  5. I think it despises The Dear Green Place and Paul’s work even more than it despises Celtica……..

    Hurtin’ horribly………..

    Rumours, rumours, rumours.

    Rumours planted.

    Rumours discussed copiously.

    Rumours planter’s mission accomplished.

PS – if Sevco do indeed get a CL windfall of £68.3m next season

    AND

The same the following season (perhaps even more with an inflationary uplift) I, for one, would be seriously worried.

Lots of ifs and buts however it is a scary scenario, even more reason why anyone who was involved in this seasons fiasco should be nowhere near the club going forward.
