McGhee, the old faux

504

Mark McGhee put on a stunning display as a faux hard man last night. After being escorted from the touchline by a police officer at Pittodrie, the Motherwell manager didn’t take well to his antics being recorded for posterity on video by an Aberdeen fan.

His unfocussed irritation transformed into confrontational anger towards the fan, but only after McGhee had made eye contact with a rapidly approaching Aberdeen official, who was a split second from intervening on his behalf.

This is the offline equivalent of the keyboard hard man. It’s just someone working through their issues in what feels like a real confrontation, but is actually relatively safe environment. Mark just needs a hug. Hug Mark, if you see him.

Speaking to the media afterwards McGhee then went into full irony mode:

“I’m absolutely disgusted and horrified by the attitude of the fourth official. Before a ball was kicked, he was causing issues that didn’t exist.”

Like creating a scene when a visiting goalkeeper warms up in front of his assigned goals, perhaps. There followed an explicit threat to get his lawyers involved, which is almost certainly faux bluster.

Many years ago Dundee United and Scotland assistant manager Jim McLean resigned from his SFA post when he ran into conflict with the Association. McGhee should consider doing likewise this morning. But first he needs a hug. Someone?

Great to see Ryan Christie making his mark at Aberdeen, the finish for his goal last night is worth catching, if you haven’t see it yet.

Delaney’s, the night Kiev beat us 3 1 over there , Big Audio Dynamite played the Barras and what a gig it was.

We ended up standing next to Bobby Hodgens at the gig and he was great company as well as being a good guy.

Talking of playing Dinamo Kiev, in the first game, Tommy was on top form then their number 9, Zavarov , hit Tommy on his ankle . Tommy had to go off and missed most of the 86/87 season as a result.

After the first leg against Kiev, three us blagged our way into the Housemartins gig at the Barras that night.

With the woofers they’ve got nowadays, the ability to tweet during a gig,and his band purring behind him, he most certainly can!

Formidable force to be surrounded by. He convinced me that he was a Celtic man when I chatted to him. I love a convert. :)

  4. JObo …. are you my mum? “I’ll not going to tell you again to clean up your room!” …. five minutes later …”have you cleaned up your room yet?”

TSoAL .. Liam in Toronto’s wife met him recently …. said he was fascinating… but badly damaged. quite sad.

for old glasgow bands … Sideway Look’s first album was classic … and there was the Beat Poets … an instrumental band who billed themselves as ‘the only band in Glasgow not afraid to have nothing to say’..always made me laugh.

    Cowiebhoy, wow.

I saw the McLuskey’s and your good self , four times. The first time was in the Arts Centre in Washington Street across the road from the Marriot Hotel. It was during Mayfest.

Each one was a very enjoyable gig.

I’m sure he wouldn’t mind me tugging his tail on here:))

I remember him coming to quite a few games with us for sure, there was quite a crowd from the West End that went regularly, a couple of right good Tims down in the restaurant at the Cul de Sac Big Jim and Chris, Top Bhoys.

Another one who drank in there and played fives with us was none other than Baron Bouffant himself although don’t remember him myself I am assured he did in fact play at the Kelvinhall with us mob:))

Wonder what he’s doing these days:)))

Beatbhoy … thanks. I am currently working through the Autobiography of Malcolm X, and just picked up the Springsteen autobiography… but your book will be next.

*Not really a fan of the Boss, Mrs TT is but just finished his book. Early on he talks of being on the altar at St Rose of Lima Church and his kafflick upbringing. His mother’s family were Italian and his da’s Irish although the paternal side of his family were dikepluggers coming over tae the Sates in the mid 18th century.

He mentions leaving the church in his teens but admits that later it still influenced his writing and way of thinking and as he says the Catholic Church never really leaves you.

  9. DD – ya roaster, it wisny me :-)

Yes Laurence was bassist with Bluebells and was on TOTP twice on one night with Bluebells and Lloyd Cole.

Remember him giving it 2-1 fingers coming on-stage at Secc after we skelped the auld rankers. Eurythmics were cracking support that night!

  16. Cowiebhoy

Aw naw! Mike in Toronto just said you were seriously talented!

I’m sure he’s got a letter he sends to people for extracting compliments under false pretences.

I saw Bauhaus that gig at Nightmoves. Very dark. Saw Spear of Destiny there about same time. Taken by a lady who loved both.

    Preferred Pete Murphy’s band.

Also, John Otway & Wild Wily Barret in 1979 – The famous Tent Tour – free entry if you bought their latest single DK50/80 in the local Woollies that day.

They were trying to show they coukd manipulate the charts or summit like that.

Meant they had no cash from entrance fees – slept in a tent on tour ( so they say)

    They were muckin fagic btw…

  25. Wow! Casemiro’s volley last night, Real’s third, wonderful goal.

Great 60 minutes, then both seemed to settle for the score.

That away goal for Napoli should make for some second leg, especially if Napoli nick one first. Can be a very uncomfortable atmosphere for away teams once the crowd there smells blood!

Saltires , thanks for the update on Mr Donegan.

General White was quite pally with Lawrence.

Cowiebhoy . I hope things have moved forward in your search for answers about what hapenned to your family dogs.

Delaney’s , my main memory of that Bauhaus gig was Pete Murphy getting a lady up on stage and crawling through her legs during one song.

Starry Plough , a few mad hairstyles about in the eighties.

A very good night on the blog . Thank you.
