McGregor and managing form of young players

913

If you’ve not been following the work being done in your name in Malawi this week, do so here.  20 people arrived from Scotland early this week on behalf of the Celtic Foundation to renovate six centres which feed children ages five and under.  They are also building a latrine (pretty sure this is a toilet) at one of the centres.

It’s another remarkable testament to the ethos of Celtic 127 years after the project started.

The Foundation are in Malawi with Mary’s Meals, the remarkable Scottish charity which is feeding hundreds of thousands of the world’s poorest children each day.  By careful management of costs, utilisation of volunteers and ‘vocational’ staff, a remarkably high 93% of their revenue reaches those in need on the ground.

Really good to read Callum McGregor speaking to Celtic media.  Not that he had anything particularly illuminating to say, but he was speaking after putting in a training session, confirming his return to fitness.

With the injury to James Forrest, Callum was one of the few bright lights in our early season form, opening the scoring in three consecutive European away games.  He even shone in the inept Murryfield performance against Legia.

At the Hearts game last month I overheard someone suggest Callum needed a rest.  His form had definitely dipped, which is not uncommon after young players sparkly when first breaking into the team.  If he stayed fit there’s little chance he would have been rested for any of the recent games, such has been the form of those around him, so maybe his recent illness came at the right time.

    It’s a great game.

I also believe, it’s a great way for folk, who would otherwise struggle, to gain an understanding of capitalism, the philosophy which is currently ruling the entire planet at the moment.

Transpose the currency of [poker] chips to food, and you’ll get the idea.

A simple approach would be if 10 of us sat at the table, made sure we had the same amount of chips, then fecked off to get on with our lives.

But for the ruling elite, secret societies, amoral bastards et al, this is just not an interesting enough approach.

Cue Capitalism and all its wonders.

Why post such a dilemma here, you ask. On a Celtic Site?

“NEIL LENNON is a frontrunner for the manager’s job at Bolton.

The former Celtic boss has already applied for the vacant post, according to sources close to the Championship side.

Lennon, who ended his four-year reign as Hoops gaffer at the end of the season, has also been linked with Saudia Arabian club Al-Ittihad.

Ronny Deila looks on with concern as his Celtic side are beaten by Hamilton Accies

Ronny Deila looks on with concern as his Celtic side are beaten by Hamilton Accies

It’s been a bit of a stuttering start to the Norwegian’s tenure at Parkhead to say the least, and events last week did little to offer any answers to the consistency conundrum that has been puzzling many fans at Parkhead.

After recording what was a fantastic win against Dinamo Zagreb in the Europa League, virtually the same Celtic side then went out just three days later and lost 1-0 to Hamilton Accies in the league.

It seems to be one step forward and then one step back for Ronny and his squad at the moment.

The latest hiccup came at a time when Celtic really could have done without it given the recent Premiership draw with Motherwell.

If you analyse the game against Hamilton, the Hoops did miss a lot of chances, and a few of them were pretty clear-cut too.

But, at the end of the day criticism or praise is dictated by the results achieved, not by performances.

Take nothing away from Hamilton, they played very well to record their first win at Parkhead since 1938, and young Ali Crawford took his winning goal well. However, with the inconsistency of their results in recent weeks it was the last thing Celtic needed or wanted.

Unfortunately, it focused pressure on the manager, something which he has been forced to get used to since joining in the summer from Stromsgodset.

The topic of conversation has revolved around Ronny, which is inevitable given the uncertain start he’s had.

There have been positives under him, especially in the Europa League. The Dinamo victory was part of that.

But there have also been negatives, and losing last Sunday and being sixth in the league are just two of them.

There’s an inconsistency with results but each game has had its own highs and lows. That epitomises their season so far.

Ronny arrived at Celtic tipped as one of Europe’s most promising young managers and he is trying to put his own stamp on things, which you can understand.

But I read his comments in Monday’s SportTimes that he believes the Celtic team are still progressing under him.

I don’t have a problem with him being positive about his team or his methods, but it’s a strange time to come out and say that. I believe it’s results that dictate what people will believe. Maybe Ronny sees things in training that makes him think the players are getting better under him, which is fair enough.

But the players have to prove it in getting results.

Even though the manager sees it and thinks it, the fans aren’t seeing it in the shape of results in the league, and that is where they’ll be judged.

Ronny can say what he wants. As Celtic manager he is entitled to his opinion.

But to make his argument convincing the results need to start coming.

Four points from their first two Europa League fixtures have sort of compensated for the slow start in the league.

However, there is still a lot of uncertainty in the minds of many supporters, and the Hamilton defeat will have done little to help that.

In that sense, I think the international break has probably come at a good time for Ronny and his players.

Even though many of them won’t get the chance of a rest because they’ll be away with their respective countries, at least they should be able to recharge mentally after a draining few weeks.

When the players come back, though, it’s crucial they get off to a good start to win over the doubters.

Ronny really can’t afford more results like the Accies defeat, so the visit to Ross County next week must be the start of Celtic getting back to winning matches.

When you win games, your training methods are right, but at present there is too much focus on what Ronny is doing off the field in training and with his approach to fitness rather than what is happening in games.

Defeat can cause people to overscrutinise. That’s what’s happening with Ronny.

Thankfully the league isn’t lost in a game, and Celtic still should win it. But the sooner they start winning the better.

When that starts to happen more fans may start turning up to games because there’s obviously been an adverse effect on attendances.

  20. Callum: Celtic must do better

CALLUM McGREGOR has acknowledged Celtic’s start to the season has been ‘unacceptable’ as he plots a return to the Parkhead first team.

Callum McGregor reckons team have still to gel

Callum McGregor reckons team have still to gel

After playing in the first 15 games of the season

for Ronny Deila, the attacking midfielder has sat out the last two matches which saw the Hoops beat Dinamo Zagreb and lose to Hamilton Accies.

It’s that incosistent form which has blighted Celtic’s start to the campaign with them currently sixth in the SPFL Premiership, six points behind the New Douglas Park leaders.

Just four wins from eight league games and an early Champions League exit have left many fans unhappy with the progress of the team this term.

But while McGregor can understand supporters’ frustrations, he says the Parkhead club are making forward strides under Deila, even if it is at a slow pace.

He said: “It’s obviously disappointing that the

Hamilton game didn’t go the way that we wanted it to go but during the international break I think it’s important that everyone reflects on it.

“We’re all right behind the manager and all we want to do is go and get a good run of results now.

“At Celtic, we know this a massive club and people are going to doubt you when you start to lose games and don’t pick up the usual points.

“Everyone in here knows that it’s not been acceptable so far.

“It’s just going to take a wee bit of time but we all believe that we are going to get there.”

McGregor is one of the few players left at Celtic’s Lennoxtown training complex following a mass exodus of international stars who have cleared out to play for their respective countries.

The 21-year-old was part of Scotland’s squad for the match in Germany last month but was left out this time by Gordon Strachan, presumably due to a recent bout of illness that has kept him out of the Hoops side.

But McGregor insists that, despite the lack of numbers at training this week, improvements are being made ahead of next weekend’s game against Ross County.

“There are a lot of guys away on international duty at the moment but the ones that are still here have had a few good training sessions.

“We’re looking forward to getting the full squad back together next week and focusing on the game at Dingwall,” he told the official Celtic website.

“Everyone is talking about the transitional

    period we are in.

“I know it comes across as a bit of a cliché but the fact is people have to gel and we are slowly but surely getting there.

“I think you can see that in some of the games we have played very well at times even though some of the results have not gone our way.

“There have been a few good performances, such as last week’s win against Dinamo Zagreb.

“Unfortunately I did not play in that because I was ill but you could start to see some of the signs of good football.

“We also played well against Hearts. That was two good performances.

“You’re starting to see more overlaps from the full-backs and some good passing and moving.

“And I think everyone agrees that we played at our best against Dundee United when we won 6-1 at Celtic Park.

“We showed some good character and had plenty of shots on goal. We all want to put in more performances in like that.

“You can see the signs of what the manager is trying to do and when it comes to the fore you get a high-scoring game.

“Everyone has to remain upbeat and not get too disappointed when it doesn’t go our way.”

  21. Brown demands results

Scott Brown is looking for Scotland to start garnering points to go with the plaudits when they face Georgia in their 2016 European Championship qualifier at Ibrox on Saturday night.

Scott Brown is looking for Scotland to start garnering points to go with the plaudits when they face Georgia in their 2016 European Championship qualifier at Ibrox on Saturday night.

Gordon Strachan’s side performed well against Germany in their Group D opener last month in Dortmund but the 2-1 defeat means the onus is on the Scots to get points on the board against the Georgians before the trip to Warsaw for the second game of the Group D double-header against Poland.

The Celtic skipper said: “We done really well against Germany in the last game and we’ve got to take that on and try to get back to winning ways.

“It’s a home game for us and we’ve got to go out thinking we can win every game. “We’ve been doing really well under Gordon and we need to try to keep it going, improving every time we meet up.”

Brown knows expectations have increased over the past 16 months as the Tartan Army dream of reaching the finals of a major tournament since the 1998 World Cup in France – where they 2016 Euros will be held.

The former Hibernian midfielder believes bravery will be the key to victory against Temuri Ketsbaia’s men.

He said: “We’ve got to be brave and play attacking football, especially at Ibrox.

“It’s been a long time since Scotland qualified for a major tournament.

“I think we deserve to be there in France for the Euros and hopefully this can be our campaign.”

Speaking before his squad trained at Ibrox, Ketsbaia warned Scotland not to take victory for granted.

“We have been written off since the beginning in Scotland,” said the former Newcastle and Dundee player.

“They said that the only teams who will not play in the finals is Georgia and Gibraltar. That is their opinion.

“I’ve been manager for five years and we have played much better teams than Scotland.

“If you see our games we are maybe not winning but we don’t make it easy for anybody.

“I don’t think Scotland are better than Spain, France, Croatia, Greece or any other team that played in the finals or won World Cups or European Championships.

“So if they (Scotland) feel confident that is their problem, not our problem.

“I’m expecting my players to go out and prove them wrong.”
