McGregor and managing form of young players

913

If you’ve not been following the work being done in your name in Malawi this week, do so here.  20 people arrived from Scotland early this week on behalf of the Celtic Foundation to renovate six centres which feed children ages five and under.  They are also building a latrine (pretty sure this is a toilet) at one of the centres.

It’s another remarkable testament to the ethos of Celtic 127 years after the project started.

The Foundation are in Malawi with Mary’s Meals, the remarkable Scottish charity which is feeding hundreds of thousands of the world’s poorest children each day.  By careful management of costs, utilisation of volunteers and ‘vocational’ staff, a remarkably high 93% of their revenue reaches those in need on the ground.

Really good to read Callum McGregor speaking to Celtic media.  Not that he had anything particularly illuminating to say, but he was speaking after putting in a training session, confirming his return to fitness.

With the injury to James Forrest, Callum was one of the few bright lights in our early season form, opening the scoring in three consecutive European away games.  He even shone in the inept Murryfield performance against Legia.

At the Hearts game last month I overheard someone suggest Callum needed a rest.  His form had definitely dipped, which is not uncommon after young players sparkly when first breaking into the team.  If he stayed fit there’s little chance he would have been rested for any of the recent games, such has been the form of those around him, so maybe his recent illness came at the right time.

If you mail me I can send you pics of some of the latest Tic related stuff I have been making.

My site has little Celtic stuff on it, soon tho, scrapping it and starting again, this time solely with football related stuff.

I have an Etsy shop called

    https://www.etsy.com/shop/CelticCollars?ref=hdr_shop_menu

Not putting the footy stuff on there.

Also if you deal direct, I can do much better rates for fellow Tims.

The bracelets are magic if I say so myself, if you look here you will get an idea what I am talking about.

    And if you do go to the facebook page, can you give it a like, it helps boost people having a look, many thanks, it’s still in it’s infancy as well, don’t put enough effort into it, but that is going to change, maybe >}

Vmhan I am staying away from the referendum stuff. It was and is incredibly divisive.

We can’t buy enough shares to influence dos DD won’t let us.

Question for all of you. Have you ever felt so detached from celtic as you do now?

    …………..

I look forward to the day we can debate Celts over a pint, you’re posts on CQN are always valid so KTF with it.

Referendum stuff lol I was at the windup, it’s a hard one for me living in England, they laugh at Scotland, we don’t deserve to be a nation and as I’m told by the English we need them to govern us, eff that!

You’re final point is …,.. Yes this is the most detached from the CFC I’ve ever felt. We all believe we are a worldwide community but we’re broke in the middle, the direction of the club by the strategically aware business plc should look at the stadium pictures of around the MON era and now.

It’s where the plc have brought my club, I look forward to a sea change in share ownership, it’s the only way forward as a football club, as a business then it’s ….. Ching Ching!

I am approaching my 58th birthday and for most of my 57 years, I haven’t never felt less attached to my team and club. It’s not just the huns in the boardroom that piss me off. I feel little or no affinity with the players many of whom strike me as out-of-touch overpaid arseholes with one eye on their next big contract. For example, I really took to Virgil Van Dyke when he joined the club and looked forward to seeing him excel for a good few years before he decided he needed a new challenge. Within twelve months he’s spat out his dummy and it’s obvious he’s much rather be playing his trade on a bigger stage than CP.

I despair at what we have become. A jumping off stage for wannabe players who yearn to move to the EPL or a dumping ground for other teams duds and misfits. Five loanees in our squad ffs. That’s just embarrassing.

Through criminal mismanagement of the club at every level we have been knocked out the CL twice by teams who have a fraction of our resources and lie sixth in a one horse league. To be honest I would not shed any tears if we did not win the league this season as it would serve the likes of Lawwell and Desmond right for their outright arrogance and contempt for our support in particular and scottish football in general.

  6. so,

BRTH, excellent stuff, and does capture it, more than a club, yes, we are firstly a plc.

    other topic,

i really liked the programme GOGGLEBOX, found it quite funny in the mix of people watching the same programmes and the comments they made, old Leon & June in particular.

    however,

when they did the Referendum results, it caught a cross section of what the English thought about Scotland and the Scots. and that was not funny.

and the programme itself doesnt have a scottish family in it.

its tainted my view a little, and made me more partisan in my views.

  7. Destroy 12. 56

There was an exercise in May to get supporters views on Celtic.

Apart from an on line survey there were a series of structured face to face meetings across the support demographic where issues were discussed and various proposals tested. The report back will make interesting reading.

This was fairly well publicised at the time but real life seems to emulate the nature of the CQN Blog, if it does not get repeated over 2 pages it never happened.

In that respect one suggestion from a chap with social media experience and how the Yanks did it was a Social Media Commander with staff to monitor social media 24/7 and pick up on issues that effect the feelings of the support.

What we need from Celtic is more focus on business and policy PR.

Why not have club business managers coming on Celtic TV every week on a shuffle basis to discuss their areas of work?

BRTH talks about being a club. People make a club and the people running the club are every bit a part of it as those they serve.

So one step would be to personalise those inside more by giving them some of the PR the football side gets. Not PL but the guys running the various Depts.

The Supporters Forum is a step in the right direction but in the gaps between meetings, disaffection and detachment can grow.

We need regular engagement to makes us feel we are part of a club and social media can be harnessed better to that end.

We need to have a successful football team, is it right now/ immediately or are we all willing to let the manager over say 3 or 4 yrs bring the youth through and keep them together, I’d be willing to give it a go, alternatively we will be in the same place yacking about a different manager in 12 months time or sooner.

I was a sack the manager but I’ve thought it through and IMO the idea is right so I’d persevere with it.

The plc are useless and have failed in their downsizing, we need a change at the top, one man owning the majority of shares is wrong.

    auldheid,

Last weekend Celtic TV suffered yet another meltdown all around the world, in fact, they claim to have been under cyber attack for the second time in three weeks. One week later and I have still received no notification about why my premium subscription collapsed once again. Celtic TV can at best be described as an amateur operation with a complete disconnect with its customers.

In a complete reversal, this morning I took a look at a live stream of Western Australia V Tasmania one-day cricket match, this HD stream was absolutely incredible, the sharpness of the video was outstanding with the ball being visible all over the field. Contrast that with Celtic TV where too often it looks like the game is being played under water.

Do you have any ideas on when the report back is due and will it be available to the public?

  15. I totally accept that a new Manager needs time to get his ideas across and that new players need time to gel but at this stage we have played 17 competitive games plus a raft of friendlies and there is no discernible improvement . As NegAnon said earlier I can cope with a few bad results but the way Ronny is continuing to set the team up game after game plus the senseless substitutions has raised serious doubts about his ability.

I’m all in favour of bringing youth through, of modern diet & fitness, possession football, flair football, high tempo attacking game with lots of goals, all the stuff that Ronny preaches but he might as well add World Peace to his objectives if the reality continues to be at such a variance to the plan.

Thanks and The right Comms is vital IMO if we are a club where the supporters views are ……. Where the strategy is formed.

Let’s say we don’t win the league over the next 2 yrs but in that time we produce a team of the standard of our Lisbon Lions, is this possible? Well FFS we did achieve it in 67, maybe 2017 is when the Celts will be championees..

I dont disagree that it has lost somwthing

Can anyone tell me when they felt that it had this ‘soul’ and had a commercial viability and success on the pitch at the same time ?

Centenary year was great but we were an unsustainable commercial shambles run by ( in many eyes) self interested old board.

Seville year saw us win nothing ( not even domestically as rangers won the double ) but millions of admirers for a few weeks. Ultimately with completely unsustainable cost base which needed further cash bail out.

Lisbon was obviously amazing but in a bygone era where things were different. Old board got kinda lucky with JS appointment but still average crowds paying peanuts and below current levs for most games.

4 2 season had shocking crowds and we were totally unprofessional. Shmbolic at board level too

Not easy for me to see where we were ever really getting it right.

Sorry but I don’t have any faith that RD can deliver given that he was originally the PLC’s candidate for number 2 and only became the number 1 when Roy Keane turned down DD. His appointment was more driven by blind panic that any sort of masterplan on the part of the plc. Also, he may talk the talk but then signs Jo Inge Berget who is the antipathy of the way he professes his teams should play. Sorry, but I just don’t have any confidence in him whatsoever and don’t think he will last another 3-4 months never 3 or 4 years.

You are right that is big changes are needed about the way the club is structured so that the fans own the club. The plc model is failing badly and we need to look to go down the barcelona club membership route which means the supporters have to get organised to effectively challenge the current owners, DD and his institutional friends. I’m afraid this means making big sacrifices and denying them what they need most, i.e., our green pounds. Clearly, some supporters have already decided to do this as individuals but unless the spirit of 1994 and Celts for Change is re-discovered, I fear the club’s current malaise will continue.

Also, much will depend on the club’s official response to Sevco in the premier league next season. Unless they make it clear that we are not prepared to go along with the Big Lie and that they regard Sevco as a new club then I will be looking for some other way to waste my time on match days.

No but it was a properly commissioned by Celtic and was a professionally led exercise.

The report will go to Celtic first to consider how to progress it which is normal business practice.

On a similar theme there is a Resolution from the CST looking at the role of the SLO ( not the incumbents performance but his role) which is a foundation in which to build.

Celtic’s response to that which will be in the AGM report will be interesting in terms of their thinking which I imagine will be influenced by feedback from the exercise I mentioned.

Saturday started with a Sauchiehall Street rally with Jim Murphy and Dr John Reid as a culmination to Murphy’s 100 Streets tour. A year ago who would have thought I’d be cheering Murphy and Doctor Death?!

Murphy and Reid were introduced by Pauline McNeil MSP who is not a great public speaker. Murphy was sparkling and got the crowd going. Reid was not as impressive as was in his prime but once he got into his stride he did well – in one passage he said something like this ’78 years ago today the British Army – Scots, Welsh, Irish and English were advancing on the Rhine – we were all there together… and when they came home they build the Welfare State and everyone got free false teeth and school milk for the kids’!

    Good tub-thumping stuff.

  28. Vmhan, You can’t say stuff like that, can you accept short term pain for long term gain. Of course if we could see into the future and if we were guaranteed long term gain then yes.
