Media and Spartak take hit for underestimating Celtic

965

Celtic’s win in Moscow on Tuesday has caused an interesting introspection in Russia, with both Spartak and some in the Russian media coming under scrutiny.  The pre-match tone was set by comments we reported from former Spartak player and coach, Andrey Tikhonov, who, on the day of the draw, said:

“Barcelona are favourites from the group. We and Benfica will be fighting for second place.

“Celtic are outsiders. The Champions League competition is about very good technical football.  It has nothing to do with running after the ball that somebody kicked forward.”

Another former Spartak player and Soviet international, who now works as a technical analyst and all-round raconteur , Aleksandr Bubnov, had a completely different take on Celtic, Spartak and the Russian and Scottish media.

Bubnov told Russian television:

“Spartak players thought they could push Celtic defenders around like toys.  They played long crosses forward like the idiots.  Celtic defenders knocked back everything.  It was like training for Celtic, they were on holiday.

“When Celtic attacked for the first time, de Zeeuw thought that Insarualde would stop the Celtic player, Insarualde thought Pareja will stop him.  When Celtic scored de Zeew asked, ‘Where was Pareja ?’  Pesjakov answered de Zeeuw, “You forgot?  Pareja is still at the lunch, he will be back for the second half.”

Bubnov criticised TV analysts who before the game debated whether Celtic would survive in the bottom half of the Russian premier division or a lower division.  He added:

“We were told by the experts that Spartak will shut Celtic out, kill them and bury outside the stadium.  They are experts, they watch games, they take money for this kind of analysis.  They told us Celtic are one story heroes.

“They talked about Rangers relegated to the fourth Division for financial cheating.  You see how they do things there?  What fantastic salvation. You are cheaters Rangers?  OK, go and take long rest.  Those in charge are professionals, nobody would help Rangers. They don’t go to the president, or the prime minister.

“Cherdantsev (TV expert) never played football.  You heard him, Spartak players and all these experts. ‘No problem, champions of Scotland?  Who are Celtic, who are Scotland?

“Experts?  Did they watch Celtic against Benfica? Benfica are top in Portugal, Celtic drew with them.  Even the stupid Scottish experts came here and told us Spartak would win 2-0.”

When asked how Spartak should play in the return game against Celtic, Bubnov suggested:

“You need to close wings and play carefully at the back. Celtic will not perform like Spartak did against Barcelona. They played and let the other team play.

“Neil Lennon was very smart coach.  He closed Spartak options on the wings.  Emeri (Spartak manager) should close Celtic wings.  Emeri’s tactics was move wingers to the centre to leave more room for attacks from left and right defenders.  But, our defenders were poor and slow.

“Emeri was stupid, he moved Aiden McGeady and Dmitri Kombarov to the centre because Neil Lennon closed wings.  What happened? They both played out of position and Kombarov scored an own goal.”

“Spartak were open on the wings and there was a brothel at the back.  Neil Lennon did what he wanted to do with Spartak”

Conversational Russian is apparently rich with imagery.

Look back at your story. Apart from the guy being a non Celtic supporter and unhappy at us scoring goals in the CL absolutely nothing else is factual. All a figment of your strange imagination.

  2. news just int its confirmed by Shankill YCV and others online that MEMBERS have been arrested in relation to the 12th July parade and the Parades Commission Restriction breaking at the Last Saturday parade in August.

A further 19 other band members (some as young as 14 years of age) apparently have been asked to turn themselves into police for questioning within the next week otherwise arrest warrants will be issued for their arrest.

One member of the band is facing court this Thursday. Other members arrested for celebrating the 12th July have been released on bail for the moment however their not allowed to come within 500 meters of any band parade ?

The Shankill Community are asking people to turn out in huge numbers this Saturday @ 6pm on the Shankill Road for YCV band parade and protest against the Parades Commission / PSNI for their actions. The band has done nothing other then celebrate their culture and history on the 12th July and for that they were punished. Rather then let anyone just tell them to keep off the streets the band proudly paraded again on the Last Saturday and as a result members are being arrested.

Watching those kids reminds me of how it was when I was a boy- great stuff. And the commentary made about as much sense to me as some of the ‘experts’ here in Scotland.

  5. No raw babies. Slagged off EDB for mentioning his daughter on here and pretty much scatter-gunned anyone who got in his road.

I accept that the right thing to do was ignore, much as you would with the sammys of this world, but that night he showed no mercy.

My main beef was that he used his keyboard in a way he would have had great difficulty in replicating in any face-to-face situation.

Not because I doubt he might be able to physically best anyone in particular, he could be Bruce Willis for all I know, but he would have been overwhelmed by the force of numbers he was abusing.

    Still, I regret getting involved.

    ……………………….

Estorilbhoy, I can assure you that more than you quote from my story above is factual. The guy was angry, very angry. His wife was agitated. His bitterness at our victory was evident in his face, his actions and in the way he quickly departed, practicaly throwing his hun missus out the door was both funny and disturbing at the same time.

Ok, I dont really know what happened after that, and so yes I did kind of make the rest up but ffs, is that so far from what happens when we win and the anger consumes them?

I’ll stick to Tip and Mitten from here onwards. I’ll sleep well anyway buddy.

Sammi always takes the ball and has been a fantastic role model for our young talented team. On his day he is World Class, I just think he has been so important to this team by his whole attitude even more so when some fans were giving him a hard time.

Sammi was the one who was always brave enough to take the ball and try to make things happen, even when it usually mean’t he would get it in the neck if it didn’t happen. It is my opinion that Sammi was the only one who wanted the ball when Ross County defeated us in the Semi Final and I was really annoyed he was getting criticism for his efforts that day.

The guy is already a Wonderful Legend in my mind because he could have left very easily, especially when the younger players were getting the regular games ahead of him but no, the Big Greek guy stayed and has hopefully taught these talented young players a real lesson in life as much as anything else. Patience, hard work, committment and a supreme team ethic.

Sammi is indeed World Class and the future years are going to be amazing for Celtic but I will always remember Sammi always looking for the ball against Ross County when we really needed the players to be confident in their abilities. If we had lost the lad after that day we would not be anywhere near where we are now IMHO.

  9. no room for the imperfect on here eh :o)

EDB wasn’t directly involed. It was a spat from a few night ago which was a one off. Nowt to worry about.

Wee James was electric when Neil introduced him on Tuesday. ;)

I thought he would have started with him but what the heck do I know. :))

The whole lineup was fantastic, it would have been very easy to have started with Joe Ledley in midfield but he knew Charlie Bhoy would do a good job in there.

What a player to bring on when real tactical changes need to be performed to the letter. Joe Ledley is right up there with Scott when it comes to following out the Managers wishes to the finest detail. That is why we must have the finest players from the Celtic nations.

I noticed that Celtic are now into 475/1 on the Betfair exchange, down from the maximum 999/1.

Celtic are going to trailblaze this season IMO and we Must use the element of surprise to the full effect.

We have no worries League wise and we can keep the team as fresh as possible.

The X Factor is that Celtic are a team that Will win the Big Cup again and it is as likely to happen this year as it is in the next 5 years.

Montpellier shocked PSG last season and if they can do that Celtic can certainly, with the full backing of the Celtic support, do it this season.

    ARMAGEDDON!!!!!!!!!!!!! Don’t make me laugh

The next round of matches are up tomorrow evening and may well be worth grabbing some of the action as the bookies have not really adjusted to the new shift in goals scored in a notoriously bad League/Country for goal scored.

    petec,

The jury is still out on James F, I would prefer him to be everything people expect.

    Another year should tell us.

  17. canamalar

I’ve made my mind up about him, he is a belter and even though I loved Aiden at Celtic and his trickery, I’d much rather have Jamesie. He has shown away from home in Europe, and that is why I am raving about him, that he can really hurt teams who are not concentrating on nullifying him.

I don’t expect miracles from him in matches in Scotland where they just shut down the game where he is concerned, it is up to others to exploit the openings elsewhere.

Its all Good in the hood.

Here have a read at this conspiracy…….

  18. Not sure if any other Irish fans posted this earlier(had the yen and yang of working late and then slap up dinner earlier) but the Irish Indo had a full page spread today on Shamrock Rovers v Celtic back in 86 today. Last ‘proper’ away win in EC for us until this week is the idea despite the format changes.

I really enjoyed it due to the fact I was at the home game v Rovers and didn’t realise this was their purple patch(I arrogantly assumed at the time as a teenager that we would pump them).

Hopefully itbis on the online version so people can access but I love the picture of Brian McClair in the lime green top I had at the time and I also had the mullet hairdo as well!.

Poinant for me because my father in law(my mentor and great mate) passed in Tallaght hospital last recently which is beside the new Rovers ground and he always talked Celtic with me(as well as politics, horses etc) with genuine interest and camaraderie despite being a through and through Munster rugby man.

For a strange oblique route, that article has made me feel better and massively positive about life and about my love for that man.

Sorry for the irrelevant post but couldn’t help it as I would have discussed the article with him and no-one else here in Dub

    Hail hail

  19. The new Muse album is dire….I have everything of theirs….been to see them three times…but they have hit their creative wall….absolute rubbish, The 2nd. Law. Avoid.

  20. Aiden’s CV being micro managed again,FWIW ,he was a player who came through the ranks and we got a Club record fee of £9-10 million. He was a first team player for about 6 seasons,we were on a downward spiral and sold him at the right time for both parties.A great Celtic bhoy who is doing very well in a good league, the only guy who entertained me after Naka left.I wish him nothing but good luck, and a warm welcome whenever he comes back to CP.

I have no info on that but it would be foolish not to be checking it out and with more income coming in our scouting network will be developed further.

The Air is just so free now the cheats have been removed. I think Neil Lennon is finally able to enjoy being the Manager of Celtic.

I really felt for the young man that he felt under incredible pressure just to get into the CL proper and that he couldn’t sleep right.

There was no need for Celtic to win the League last season in my mind as it was all about Supporting Neil Lennon after what he had been through.

Dermot, I think Dermot was giving the journalist the full respect he deserved and enabled him to go with the story that he had SCOOPED.

  23. Neil Canalamar

I think every promising young Scottish player has too much expectation at too young an age these days. Reaction to the dearth of successful home grown players I think.

You are probably right on the 1 year to see if he is a superstar but I would settle for star.

List of ‘stars’ who fizzled lot

    Eoin Jess(stopped scoring)

    Joe Miller(disappeared after Celtic)

    Simon Donnelly(faded fast)

Ian Durrant(2 good Scotland games post injury and that was it)

John Robertson(did well at youth level and for Hearts then a limited run with Scotland)

Steven Naismith(explosive at Killie and OK for rangers but cannas heid a ba)

Something wrong in Scottish coaching but I really do think James has it. Always does something in a game.

Best thing in his favour is that my Da thinks he is mince(he didn’t live Nicholas, McAvennie or Larsson at first either)

  24. Aiden McGeady in this present Celtic side would be awesome. He would have a manager and players who understood football. I loved WGS but at times his sides made me want to hide–too much respect given to sides who didn’t deserve it. He knew he was fighting 11 against 14 every week. He’s clever. His dismiviness of the MSM was on the ball. But–unlike NL he was hesitant to take a chance in a match. He would be a briliant manager for Scotland. Lieven is a toady. Commons behind 7 other players? Play the game and don’t say anything about Sevco–the way to get on in Scotland.
