Messi, La Gran Muralla, Celtic and England squad

1017

A crucial aspect of the season just past was the form of goalkeeper, Fraser Forster.  Fraser has been Celtic’s first choice goalkeeper since joining on loan from Newcastle United as a 22-year-old but his deal was only made permanent 11 months ago, when he was secured for a fee reported as £2m.

Now 25, the keeper has enjoyed a dream campaign.  Celtic’s major achievements this season were winning the league and qualifying for the Champions League group stage, but for Fraser more than anyone else at the club, that night against Barcelona produced an outstanding personal performance.  La Gran Muralla had arrived.

Now a regular member of the England international squad, Fraser is the identikit of what Celtic are about right now.  Scout players with potential and provide them with the opportunity to mature to Champions League standard.  The added bonus of picking Rangers International’s partner-investor, Sports Direct’s pocket makes the deal sweeter.

Fraser has it all: presence, fast reflexes and an instinct for angles, but the most important item in a keeper’s armoury is a relationship with a rock solid defence.  Celtic demonstrated they could deliver on this front on Champions League duty, until they faced Juventus, but the picture has been far less convincing in the SPL.

The most striking aspect of Fraser is his sheer physical size.  His 6’7” he fills the goal frame, considerably reducing the space between keeper and post at penalty kicks, which his stats are well above average for.

Fraser was disappointed not to be included in the England squad for friendly games against Ireland and Brazil over the next week but Roy Hodgson will be mindful that Celtic have a shorter summer break than any other club he will be following, and Fraser will need some break-time before preseason starts in around three weeks.  This is good squad management.  The keeper is likely to make his full England debut as his country prepare for the 2014 World Cup, leading to a whole raft of revised comments on the Scottish game.

Have you bought a raffle ticket for the framed Celtic top signed by the Seville squad?  It costs you £1, or £10 for 10!!  All to benefit the 125415 campaign, aligning Celtic with our 125-year-old heritage.

Not only that, but………….

We have a framed Messi top signed by the great player who was able to breach La Gran Muralla after 183 minutes trying, available for auction.  It’s not often you can buy such a memento of the world’s greatest footballer, and help Celtic charities too.

The Seville strip raffle closes on Friday but you have until Monday to bid on the Messi auction.

The bond was backed by merchant bankers Noble & Grossart, Ally McCoist did a video appeal to bears and bearettes on Rangers TV introduced by Archie MacPherson, the whole nine yards.

The Bond was advertised as allowing the holder into Ibrox for European ties and not just football, but all events at Ibrox and now they canny get a seat up there.

    Oh dear, how sad.

But the saddest thing of all is that if Walter tried the same bond scam next season they would buy into it, because like SDM he is one of the people.

David Cameron and Nick Clegg are on a plane, Cameron looked at Clegg, chuckled and said, “You know, I could throw a £1,000 note out of the window right now and make somebody happy.”

Clegg shrugged his shoulders and replied, “I could throw ten £100 notes out of the window and make ten people happy”

  12. It was 125 years ago today, on May 28, 1888 that a crowd of 2,000 braved a chilly evening to watch the newly-formed Celtic Football Club take on the established side from the South Side at the first Celtic Park – or where the new-builds now are on Springfield Road.

The Celts took to the field in their original outfits of white shirts with green collars with a red and green Celtic cross on the breast as they recorded a win in their first ever game against a side who were to become their greatest rivals.

The game was won 5-2 with the honour of scoring Celtic’s first ever goal falling to Neil McCallum who, just nine months later, would also score Celtic’s first Scottish Cup final goal.

The Scottish Umpire of the day said that Celtic played with: “a combination which could scarcely have been expected from an opening display.

“It would appear that the newly-formed Glasgow club, the Celtic FC, has a bright future before it. At any rate, if the committee can place the same eleven on the field as opposed Rangers last Monday evening, or an equally strong one, the Celtic will not lack for patronage or support.”

One of the bits I like the best is where the BDO letter says: “A number of creditors and shareholders have asked us to clarify how the SPL prize money due to the Company for finishing second in the 2011/12 season was dealt with.”

It suggests that BDO are bending over so far to avoid saying their club is dead that it is now saying explicitly that the old company finished second in the SPL. I mean, no wonder Celtic walked it, if the next best team was a works team.

…” I get knocked down, but I get up again..”

Started today, in hospital, sedated, starved, having my colon examined again with a bazooka..

However, making my escape at lunch time, that roll and cup of tea ALWAYS taste SO good after my starvation….

Got home and reckoned I d pass the fitness test for Celtic Graves Day visit..

MRS AB dropped me in the pouring rain at Cathcart Cemetery on Glasgow South..

Around 20 of us, happily representing the Celtic support the world over, visited the grave of Willie Maley and his family- wife,mum,dad..

His grave is as humble as you can see..set in from the main thoroughfare, in a tree lined, grassy, mossy path.. Many of the surrounding graves are also old.. Birth dates in the 1850’s etc..

Willie Maley s name therefore is not even on THE FRONT of the headstone.. It’s his dad and mum I reckon named on the front, and Willie s name low down on one side and his wife low down on the opposite( she died on Christmas Day, I note!)

Around 20 of us gathered, reverently, many I m sure said some quiet prayers, grave yards have a way of making you grateful for life..

Some photographs were taken, and one by one we drifted away..

All united as Celtic fans,family..All representing those of you not lucky enough to live nearby..

I WAS glad to get along- especially after MY day.. (bazookas are not mean to go up there, hence sedation)

I took some photos but will need a junior AB to show me how to post them..

A truly lovely evening to be part of the Celtic family. I hope some of you can FEEL how it was to be there, part of the very fabric, the core of this great club..

Proudly carried on by Neil Lennon..

As we gathered tonight, I was reminded of the words from the bible that said

” where 2 or 3 of you gather in my name,I am in your midst”

And so this is how it felt for me to be standing at Willie Maley’ s grave tonight, in a very wet, quiet Glasgow cemetery – representing all the Celtic family far and wide…

Loving the fact that the Oldco/Newco argument has turned full circle and is now being used against the poor fans of the Tribute Act. Seriously, haven’t they been punished enough?

While on the subject of the Sevconians, how do we see the next stage of the circus playing out after Whytes lawyers sent that letter today? What kind of timescale would we expect before court proceedings?

Finally, in relation to our famous Club, when will work on the Celtic Triangle actually begin??

The Bible is an amazing gift from God, but it exhorts the people of God, not to have a Bible in the house and study it (a brilliant thing to do though that is), but to gather together, to listen to the Word of God and to break the bread.

Not just the Eucharist, but all of the sacraments are based on Scripture and include Scripture readings. The first half of the Hail Mary is from Scripture. The Our Father is from Scripture. The Angelus is from Scripture. Thirteen of the 15 traditional mysteries of the rosary are described in Scripture; 18 out of 20 if you include Pope John Paul II’s Mysteries of Light.

For the vast majority of the Catholic Church’s history, the vast majority of people have had no access to a Bible to read and no literacy skills with which to read it. So we have these other ways that help us know our Bible. We also have stained-glass windows and statues.
