MIH poison, poetic history, value of good players

2883

If you’ve been here for 12 years you’ll know that Celtic Quick News started because there was a great untold financial story going on in Scottish football. Celtic were castigated by many, including a large portion of their own support, as “prudent”, while Rangers, then under the majority ownership of Sir David Murray, were lauded for their willingness to ambitiously push the boat out.

But there was a problem. Celtic were losing millions every year. Rangers were losing a lot more, £35m in one season alone. David Murray’s company, Murray International Holdings (MIH), were ½ a billion in debt to Bank of Scotland, and rising.

By this stage MIH’s steel business was dwarfed in significance by its property portfolio. They borrowed from the bank and, perhaps with an eye on the fantasy Ibrox Super Casino, gambled that the market would rise inextricably.

For a few years the debt kept rising. “What’s the problem?” many said, if the Bank are prepared to lend MIH and Rangers, their strategy must be sound. These were difficult times to be preaching financial responsibility in Scottish football, but the reality was written in mile-high font for many of us. “They’re going to crash and burn”, seemed inevitable.

Today we read the news that MIH are, like Rangers before them, finally liquidated. Ignore the reported £200m that Lloyds Banking Group (now owners of Bank of Scotland) lost, that’s just the loose change. The Bank had swapped debt for shares in MIH as clouds gathered. The true financial cost to Lloyds (significantly owned by UK taxpayers) is vastly higher.

Much of the story of David Murray will never be told, not while he’s alive, anyway, as it took place well away from verifiable sources. This might change after he’s dead. The one redeeming positive he brought to football was to end the sectarian signing policy at Rangers in 1989. For that he should be lauded, many before him had the chance to do the same but chose not to.

That aside, the influence of Murray and MIH was poisonous to his club. He sold out for £1 to a liquidation expert in May 2011, against the wishes of his own board’s advisory committee, as his club claimed its last ever league title. The rest, is poetic history.

As luck would have it, tonight I’ll be with some Celtic supporter friends.  We’ll raise a glass to Sir David and his legacy.  Thanks for all you achieved, David, it could never have happened without you.

Erik Sviatchenko is a lesson in the difference good players make to a team. He’s started 11 games since joining in January, we’ve lost four goals over that period. In our previous 11 games we lost 12 goals. His impact on team performance has been phenomenal.

We’ll miss him tomorrow – so should make tactical changes to accommodate the perceived risk.

Motherwell are on fire. Less than two months ago they were in the play-off spot. Now they need just one point to guarantee a top six finish. They will battle every second for that point. If we are going to win tomorrow’s game, we will need to put in our of our best shifts of the season.

Time to get it together, Celtic.

KT did not make a mistake.

He anticipated where the ball would land, but, unfortunately, a cruel back spin on the ball took it away from him and into the path of the ‘ Well player.

    Leigh Griffiths.

I believe his “problem” is that he is an instinctive player, who doesn’t need time to think, when he gets the ball.

    He hits it early.

It is when he has time to think, like a penalty or going through on a one to one, that he sometimes has a problem and makes the wrong decision.

Thinking and Leigh are not always compatible, as was also evident when he pulled off his jersey.

I suppose that’s why we love him.

I know you mentioned St Mirrenbut also think Aberdeen were sniffing about him a few years ago when Peterhead were banging in 5 & 6 a game, think Rory knocked them back as his job (plumber ? Or other trade) paid the bills….. I have never saw him play but McInally rated him better than part time, we all know players who could probably have made it……or at least better than some who did

Full house at Hampden for a competition that used to attract a similar audience as the Junior Cup Final, and was played at Livingstone, in a half-empty stadium.

If we, as a support, had endured all the sh*t that the Ibrox mob have, albeit totally self-inflicted, just how many would we have brought to Hampden for a tuppence h’apenny final?- I’d like to think the same, but I have very serious and well-founded doubts.

Certainly if it was left to some on here, those ‘holier than thou’ folk, who occupy the ‘moral high-ground’, and who have never made a mistake in their life, we would be lucky to muster ten thousand.

We have a well-run club, administered by honest people, who have Celtic’s best interests at heart – sure there have been mistakes, and errors of judgement have been made as we strive to replace players sold on, but at no time has there ever been any suggestion of cheating and/or misuse of funds – if paying a CEO a decent salary and performance bonus is the insurance premium we pay to ensure our club is beyond reproach, then we get a great deal.

Those who repeatedly ‘slay’ our board, are duty-bound to lay out their master-plan, chapter and verse, if they want to be taken with even a modicum of respect:

    1) What kind of change do that want?

    2) How will they effect this change?

    3) Where will the finance come from?

    4) Who are the experienced people who will step in?

    5) How much would it cost?

    6) How long would it take?

    7) What banks & finance organisations would be willing to back us?

    8) What would current sponsors have to say about change?

    9) How many fans would be sickened?

    10) How many season-books would we sell?

So I say to the malcontents, the mischief-makers, the Lawwell-haters and the board-haters – PUT UP or SHUT UP!

BMCUWP@4:22 – Once again you are super-selective – you pick one phrase out of context and answer it in a trite and unhelpful way.

On YOUR point – I always try to answer a point if I reply to a post – the so called ‘mischief-makers and malcontents of twenty-two years ago were taking on a corrupt, malfunctioning and secretative board – they had Keane, Dempsey and evantually Fergus….and a well-thought out plan…..

  22. An Teach Solais on

    CAPTAIN BEEFHEART

My argument with Kill Ultra was not over his views. He is entitled to believe that the Board should be more proactive. I do not even object to him believing that I am guilty of exclusivity because I stayed that I would be offline due to going to Mass.

I object to him demanding information from a group of private individuals who from their own pockets or from one or more sympathisers information which could endanger them or the progress of Res12 whatever he now thinks of that process. I tried to suggest that he get information from CFC ‘re his belief, imagined or otherwise, that CFC was making a financial contribution. I may be well off beam but “Whaur’s Ra Deeds?” was in my mind though he probably had some locus in that matter.

For myself it is not his opinions which are objectionable but unreasonable demands for information from committed Res12 people for which he was willing to pay money when, presumably, as a shareholder he could obtain the information to substantiate or disprove his imagined chicanery.

As for giving him the treatment I questioned his motives, especially at this juncture of proceedings. Everyone is entitled to form their own opinions and express those. HH

  23. I think Kieran’s reaction to their goal was the greatest indication that he knew he’d made a mistake.

As I said it was his performance from that point on that really, really impressed me. Far from letting his head go down he helped drive the team to victory.

    That’s real character.

  24. Beefy There are plenty of new posters. Getting new posters is not the problem hanging on to good posters who get fed up of the trolls & wind up merchants is the problem.

Kill Ultra had absolutely no entitlement to demand that the identity of funders of Res 12 be made known to him.

Yet he carried on a persistent campaign looking for this info.

One would have thought that once Auldheid had been outed by a Hun and his photo published on Social Media that he would have recognised the need for discretion but no he continued his demands unabated.

He was acting the prick and deserved to be told so.

CULTSBHOY@4:32 – You don’t answer because you have no answer.

As usual you deflect by name-calling – I am not one of the people you mention – however I believe I represent the vast majority of season-ticket holders who pay millions to support and watch our club.

As I said earlier, £900k, being Peter Lawwell’s salary and bonus, half of which is paid in legal taxes to HMRC, is the insurance premium we pay for an honest and succesful club – we get a fantastic deal.

    PLUS

We get very low interest on any borrowing from CO-OP Bank – we have the Magners and New Balance deals, plus another couple in the pipeline – top class merchandising – a training ground bought at a wonderful price – safe-standing areas coming in at Celtic Park – the Celtic Way, and tens of millions in transfer-fees over the past five years….all these things are down to Peter Lawwell and his team and ALL for £450/year.

  30. CultsBhoy can not relate to Celtic Board ambitions on or off the park on

    Mr Pastry

I think you’ll find Lawwell is on £1.1m including bonus.

If he’s doing such a great job why are there so many empty seats?

    Why do many fans feel

Disconnected from the views of Board members like Lord Livingstone?

Why didn’t we win a single game in Europe’s 2nd tier cup last year?

Why has the football this season universally been judged to be among the poorest seen in decades?

    I could go on..

  31. Mr Pastry
