MIH poison, poetic history, value of good players

2883

If you’ve been here for 12 years you’ll know that Celtic Quick News started because there was a great untold financial story going on in Scottish football. Celtic were castigated by many, including a large portion of their own support, as “prudent”, while Rangers, then under the majority ownership of Sir David Murray, were lauded for their willingness to ambitiously push the boat out.

But there was a problem. Celtic were losing millions every year. Rangers were losing a lot more, £35m in one season alone. David Murray’s company, Murray International Holdings (MIH), were ½ a billion in debt to Bank of Scotland, and rising.

By this stage MIH’s steel business was dwarfed in significance by its property portfolio. They borrowed from the bank and, perhaps with an eye on the fantasy Ibrox Super Casino, gambled that the market would rise inextricably.

For a few years the debt kept rising. “What’s the problem?” many said, if the Bank are prepared to lend MIH and Rangers, their strategy must be sound. These were difficult times to be preaching financial responsibility in Scottish football, but the reality was written in mile-high font for many of us. “They’re going to crash and burn”, seemed inevitable.

Today we read the news that MIH are, like Rangers before them, finally liquidated. Ignore the reported £200m that Lloyds Banking Group (now owners of Bank of Scotland) lost, that’s just the loose change. The Bank had swapped debt for shares in MIH as clouds gathered. The true financial cost to Lloyds (significantly owned by UK taxpayers) is vastly higher.

Much of the story of David Murray will never be told, not while he’s alive, anyway, as it took place well away from verifiable sources. This might change after he’s dead. The one redeeming positive he brought to football was to end the sectarian signing policy at Rangers in 1989. For that he should be lauded, many before him had the chance to do the same but chose not to.

That aside, the influence of Murray and MIH was poisonous to his club. He sold out for £1 to a liquidation expert in May 2011, against the wishes of his own board’s advisory committee, as his club claimed its last ever league title. The rest, is poetic history.

As luck would have it, tonight I’ll be with some Celtic supporter friends.  We’ll raise a glass to Sir David and his legacy.  Thanks for all you achieved, David, it could never have happened without you.

Erik Sviatchenko is a lesson in the difference good players make to a team. He’s started 11 games since joining in January, we’ve lost four goals over that period. In our previous 11 games we lost 12 goals. His impact on team performance has been phenomenal.

We’ll miss him tomorrow – so should make tactical changes to accommodate the perceived risk.

Motherwell are on fire. Less than two months ago they were in the play-off spot. Now they need just one point to guarantee a top six finish. They will battle every second for that point. If we are going to win tomorrow’s game, we will need to put in our of our best shifts of the season.

Time to get it together, Celtic.

I’m often left feeling uncomfortable when Boyata has the ball at his feet. I agree he has a bit of pace and wins a good amount of aerial challenges but I still see too many possible mistakes in him. I’d like to see Ambrose and Mulgrew given a shot together.

Ronny will certainly have a tough decision to make, especially if Eric is available.

  3. It’s to their credit that the RES.12 Bhoys amassed sufficient evidence to now put a case before UEFA. I’m sure they have the backing of many Shareholders beyond the landmass that is the UK.

Too many supporters opinions are formed by the admass driven media. Instead of consigning the print matter to the bin – think environmentally friendly. For the gardeners, add it to your own biomass compost heap – it breaks up when mixed with camass-type (grass like) leaves.

Plenty of time this week for those attending mass today and those attending mass before kick-off next week to discuss the massive opportunity we have to put them in their place.

Hopefully we won’t have a Massif to climb and that we massacre the masscult next Sunday.

Will catch any replies after my visit to the masseuse!

On the Boyata subject if he’s good enough for Belgium he’s good enough for us, I think if we get a settled back two he will benefit, until that day Charlie Mulgrew does not let us down at all, I think we have by far the best 4 centre halves in our league dedryeck, simo, Erick & chas, the problem being Ronny has very rarely had the option of picking the same 2 continually

On Ronny anybody else think he has managed both KT & PR pretty well and now reaping the benefits

  8. Felt real sympathy for young Tierney at their goal yesterday, his disappointment in his error was plain to see.

The character of this Bhoy though shone through with his performance from that point on. His accuracy when putting balls into the opposition penalty box is fantastic.

  9. As for Auldheid meeting you, I have advised strongly against such a meeting you are obviously not to be trusted, you have a sinister agenda that is not conducive to the successful outcome of Res12.

If you really think that I’m not who I claim to be, surely you should want me to take up Auldheid’s invitation to meet with the secret donor. You could then unmask me as the fraud you claim me to be.

I’m a fan of Dedryk’s too. He played really well yesterday under a lot of provocation which he didn’t rise too. On a number of occasions Moult and others left their boot in just after Dedryk had made a pass or clearance. I agree with your view that his distribution is showing some improvement. I think he will be a major player for us next season if he addresses this weakness.

Totally agree with your post, I nearly went nuts when Griff went for goal from that free with 60 seconds left on the clock.

I think Griff has had a brilliant season for us and I would love to see him aMASS as many goals as possible but not at the cost of endangering League points.

He is not a great penalty taker & he shouldn’t have taken that last minute pot shot looking for his hat-trick.

Also totally agree with An Teach Solais re Res 12.

Can’t get guys slagging the bhoys who took this on. If it gets nowhere so what, at least they tried.

There are pr**ks here who have done nothing themselves and seem to think it’s OK to slag those who tried, accusing them of being seduced by the Board etc. You couldn’t make it up.

Boyata came to us having played only 32 senior matches in his career to that point, remarkably few given he was 24 years old. He’d effectively been in a 6 year apprenticeship. I can’t think of a footballer who’s played so few times by that age. When Efe arrived here aged 23 for example, he had played 180 games. Virgil, by 21, had made 62starts in the Dutch top league.

Boyata has added a further 25 or so starts to that total since he joined us.

He needs a further 40 senior matches to learn his position. 100 matches at this level is the requirement.

It’ll be this time next year before we’ll know if is a capable centre half, and that’s only provided he avoids injury and is selected to play.

There’s no getting away from it: Footballers need to be time-served.

  18. Great result for the Bhoys yesterday, watched highlights at Heathrow last night. Unfortunately the Lhads team lost 4-3 in a thriller where they managed to do a Hibs with even more style than Hibs. One up after 10 mins and then fell 4-1 down by scoring two own goals and their keeper letting a hopeful punt fall over the line. So no league title bit a well deserved Promotion for a smashing bunch of young lads. In true Sunday league style they do have a case of asking for a rematch as the opposition fielded a ringer, apparently it’s a bang to rights case, so the story may go on….

Great to meet my lhad and to see him settled with a cracking young team who have all stepped up from juvenile football in the last two seasons. I hate to think what some of the grizzly animals who play in the Lanarkshire league would do t them though!

Anyway, may watch a bit of football today from White Hart Lane, could be a cracker.

  20. ClashCB,

Agree on the CL Europe strategy under Ronny.

    Keep ball when winning.

Forgot to mention on last post about Ronny never mentioning that we get kicked off the park most games in his post match comments. Look at the stats list most games. Less fouls more bookings. We are one of the most disciplined teams in the league but our cards per opposition rack up. We’re all already talking about our inevitable red card next week. We need Ronny to be speaking out especially when we win.

On Ronny who I’ve wanted to succeed as his way of playing is the correct way but I’m of the opinion we should be looking for a stronger individual with a lot of the same principles as Ronny but with the experience and fear/respect required to motivate the players.

Always thought the most money we should spend should be on the manager. The most important person at a club.

If we win the double the shout seems to be that we have to keep the manager.

I think it would show serious ambition by our club even if we win the double to say thanks to Ronny but we want to take it to the next level.

I would love to keep him in some capacity as I think he’s got us and Ido like him. I hate posting this about him as he is a good yin. He has an approach to the game that is modern but we need to be strong on and off the pitch next season for so many reasons(PR by our club is brutal at present/players talking/misquotes)

The board need to take responsibility for not backing the fans/club and taking the fight to the SFA/media. I think it would put a good few thousand onto the gate if they did.

Maybe Ronny hasn’t been backed enough from above but bring in an experienced assistant to help Ronny or we should spend big on the next manager.

Not a Ronny slating. Just imo want what’s best for my club.

Still want Ronny to win the double.

Since making the offer to find out if one of the funders was willing to meet Kill Ultra there was a wee bit of twitter behavior that gave me cause for concern, so no point taking risks.

Correct, mate. We should be going into games concerned about two things only.

The damage we can inflict on the opposition.

The damage the opposition can inflict on us.

We should not be concerned about the damage a typical refereeing performance can inflict. No team should, and it’s a disgrace that we continually have to concern ourselves with it.

  24. Kill Ultra,

Wouldn’t go as far as to say you are a Hun, but you might be a journalist. If you are neither and are in fact a Celtic Supporter you are in my opinion a misguided one.

You seem to think that others owe you an explanation. 4 or 5 times you asked “what happened to Auldheid” why the blazes did you not scroll back like the rest of us and find out if you really cared about what happened.

Re the Res12 itself, OK if you initially backed it fine, well done but so did plenty of others, yet you are the only one kicking up a fuss and demanding to know the names of the Financial donors. You must realise there is very little sympathy for your approach on the blog, As I said earlier Canamalar came up with the idea, he was joined by Auldheid, Morrissey & BRTH, they put a mountain of work into the effort. If it fails which it well might, at least they tried and gave it a bloody good shot,

They will still be heroes in my eyes.

  25. BOBBY MURDOCH'S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS on

    AULDHEID

Due to a total lack of shares,I did not contribute to Res 12. But had I done so,I would have recognised the importance of leaving it to a small number of dedicated people with the drive and nous to push it through.

It really is not the stuff of management by committee, that would doom it to failure from the start.

Yes,of course valid questions deserve answers, but the current line of interrogation doesn’t seem to have any other reasoning than to hole it from within. Kill Ultra has had the best part of three years to raise his concerns, yet all of a sudden springs into life with repeated and unreasonable-IMO-demands.

    Stick to your guns,bud.

    Vive le resolution!!!!!

  26. I’m undecided on RD.

After the performance v Dundee I thought it was time up but yesterday was chalk and cheese.

The same situation arose before we played Hearts at Tynecastle. In the previous game, v Motherwell I think, we were awful yet at Tynecastle even after two injuries to two players in first half we played well and only a last minute howitzer cost us a win.

I think consistency of performance comes from consistency of selection, I believe Leicester City bear this out but I’m uncertain as to the reasons for changing selections at Celtic. What I do believe is losing VVD and DeNayer cost us a CL qualifying place.

What RD needs is performance consistency and he only has a small number of games to show it. On top of that Simunovic who was bought as a CB won’t get a chance to be part of the consistency process in a key position.

An inconsistent performance next week would tip the see saw heavily against RD remaining at CP.

  27. Hamiltontim,

Totally agree on your post about young Kieran. He was clearly devastated at his mistake. His attitude after that was why we love this bhoy.

Would take 11 of him in the team.

    CorkCelt,

Yeh the wee man has been brilliant. He’s carried us to the title this season but when it’s not going right for him in a game he stops being a team player. His determination to do well blinds what’s required.

Just needs taken aside and reminded it’s not all down to him. Luv The Griff!

I agree with your analysis of Boyata and the need for him, like any pro footballer, to serve their time in a particular position.

Derk has several attributes, that could well see him becoming a very decent centre half but at the moment, with a cup semi final coming up, my preference would be for Mulgrew and Ambrose.
