MIH poison, poetic history, value of good players

2883

If you’ve been here for 12 years you’ll know that Celtic Quick News started because there was a great untold financial story going on in Scottish football. Celtic were castigated by many, including a large portion of their own support, as “prudent”, while Rangers, then under the majority ownership of Sir David Murray, were lauded for their willingness to ambitiously push the boat out.

But there was a problem. Celtic were losing millions every year. Rangers were losing a lot more, £35m in one season alone. David Murray’s company, Murray International Holdings (MIH), were ½ a billion in debt to Bank of Scotland, and rising.

By this stage MIH’s steel business was dwarfed in significance by its property portfolio. They borrowed from the bank and, perhaps with an eye on the fantasy Ibrox Super Casino, gambled that the market would rise inextricably.

For a few years the debt kept rising. “What’s the problem?” many said, if the Bank are prepared to lend MIH and Rangers, their strategy must be sound. These were difficult times to be preaching financial responsibility in Scottish football, but the reality was written in mile-high font for many of us. “They’re going to crash and burn”, seemed inevitable.

Today we read the news that MIH are, like Rangers before them, finally liquidated. Ignore the reported £200m that Lloyds Banking Group (now owners of Bank of Scotland) lost, that’s just the loose change. The Bank had swapped debt for shares in MIH as clouds gathered. The true financial cost to Lloyds (significantly owned by UK taxpayers) is vastly higher.

Much of the story of David Murray will never be told, not while he’s alive, anyway, as it took place well away from verifiable sources. This might change after he’s dead. The one redeeming positive he brought to football was to end the sectarian signing policy at Rangers in 1989. For that he should be lauded, many before him had the chance to do the same but chose not to.

That aside, the influence of Murray and MIH was poisonous to his club. He sold out for £1 to a liquidation expert in May 2011, against the wishes of his own board’s advisory committee, as his club claimed its last ever league title. The rest, is poetic history.

As luck would have it, tonight I’ll be with some Celtic supporter friends.  We’ll raise a glass to Sir David and his legacy.  Thanks for all you achieved, David, it could never have happened without you.

Erik Sviatchenko is a lesson in the difference good players make to a team. He’s started 11 games since joining in January, we’ve lost four goals over that period. In our previous 11 games we lost 12 goals. His impact on team performance has been phenomenal.

We’ll miss him tomorrow – so should make tactical changes to accommodate the perceived risk.

Motherwell are on fire. Less than two months ago they were in the play-off spot. Now they need just one point to guarantee a top six finish. They will battle every second for that point. If we are going to win tomorrow’s game, we will need to put in our of our best shifts of the season.

Time to get it together, Celtic.

Pretty sure there is only 5 subs on the bench in the cup so there’s not much of an option to cover all the bases.

Obviously 1 of those spots is gonna be a back up keeper, so just 4 outfield players to pick.

Id say one of those spots will be for a defender……probably Efe, as i think its too big a risk to include Erik if he is not 100% and could limp off at any time and not only use an option up, but would leave us without another defensive option if anything happens, like an injury to Boyatta or Mulgrew, or in the unlikely event(tongue firmly in cheek)we get a red card.

Mulgrew must be a great option for a manager at times like this, as he can play in quite a few positions, so he would be a great to have on the bench but right now hes needed on the pitch and id say he merits a start next week.

So……3 subbys left……theres gonna be a lot of disappointed players!

I think we will be starting with yesterdays side, so id say Armstrong and Rogic may get 2 of those spots, leaving Commons, McGregor or GMS for the final spot……

I think your team is right in defence, but

Patrick Roberts will play. Curious that you selected

Stuart Armstrong who hasn’t kicked a ball all season.

I agree regarding Leigh Griffiths, and the booking was as stupid as it was

inevitable. When he missed a third penalty at Hamilton someone else should have

been designated, and shouldn’t have taken yesterdays.

Sick & tired of Kill Ultra and his carry on.

The group that got behind Res. 12 is not a formal Organisation with a written Constitution. Kill Ultra you seem to have a huge sense of Entitlement,a Hunnish trait I may add from where I stand neither you or any one else of us have any entitlement to know who funded the Res 12 campaign.

I’m sure the media would like to know OK but that is their job, and no doubt if the names did become public, some understanding Hun would publish a photo of them on Social Media just to make their life a bit uncomfortable and as warning to tell “Croppies lie down”,

I had forgotten about only 5 subs, although I thought that had been changed, and you are right, if Erik isn’t 100%, then Efe will be on the bench.

That of course leads onto will Lustig last the 90 minutes, and if he doesn’t how do you deal with this.

Only my view, but if Erik is fit, I am sure he could also cover at right back.

    BSR

Although the overt hammer throwers like McCulloch and Black are gone, they always use physical intimidation, and I expect next Sunday to be no different, hence using Armstrong who is physically stronger for first 55/60 minutes.

My instinct is the game will be like last year, where we win comfortably, but it is not high scoring.

Then -‘that booking is going to be costly’ – I didn’t say it like that :@ – agree a fine is needed to remind anyone else similarly inclined.

I also agree we need pace at cetre back next week – For me it’s Efe or Dedryck beside Chic even if Eric is fit, simply because we need one real pace player beside a ball winner and Chic is fit, can slot into a few roles and in reasonable form but, most importantly, he knows the script with Mibs

We need to go straight for the winning goals and hold nothing back. Keep middle and front same as yesterday and launch Tom Rogic at 55 minutes for whoever is tiring or to cover the inevitable red card…

I went to Vigil Mass last night. I pointed out earlier in the week that we only had your say so that you were one of the signatories to Resolution 12 and there is no doubt in my mind that you are a Hun Lovin’ Chancer. Auldheid would be well advised not to have any meeting with you. We’ve got your number. All you want to do is expose signatories and delay the Res 12 process. Crawl back under your slimy stone.

  17. Joe Filippis Haircut on

A lot of chest beating about resolution 12 will it succeed wont it succeed ? well it depends I suppose on your view of success. It is over 3 years now since it was submitted and for me an ordinary fan no amount of hopeful posts from Auldheid or Canalamar will convince me that it will succeed my view is that the Celtic board took control of the resolution and slowed it down to where it is now no more than limping along and will fizzle out.I dont blame the Bhoys for the resolution as it was well meant but the supporters are no match for the Celtic board and the tribute act join us in the SPL next season and it is my belief that was the wish of the Celtic board all along. H.H.

  20. Hi

A few points on yesterday’s game.

A tough win. We deserved it and it should have been more comfortable.

What I’ve thought for a while now it’s the small basics that can let us down or put us in trouble in games and it all stems from strong management.

Ronny for me should have changed the pk taker after the Hamilton away game. Also taking your top off after scoring. Jesus Leigh yeh it’s a stupid rule but…aagh!

A throw in should 95% of the time be down the line. Less chance of damage being done(Mon tactic).

Running the clock down? Ronny should have been screaming, going mental at Leigh lining up to take that injury time free kick. Selfish and totally naive from Leigh but Ronny and possibly Broony should have been directing him to keep ball. What did he do? Well we know Well created a great chance after it. I was raging. Shouting. Pacing the floor at the naivety of it. Such fine lines. We got away with it but it’s something I’ve noticed under Ronny. It’s like he lets the players decide. Commendable but sometimes not required. Lack of fear makes players do stupid things.

Delighted at the result yesterday but all the hard work for the 90 mins was nearly lost in injury time.

  28. Saltires,

Hope you are well, and nice to read your thoughts on your dad.

I won’t be at game either next week, as I have a prior event organised, and whilst I will miss the camaraderie with the crew, I can’t honestly say I will miss not being at the match.

On the line up, I am probably in a minority in that I rate Boyata, and I think he will get better.

He is big, strong, good tackler, scores goals, and has a bit of pace.

His distribution has improved from poor to reasonable, as has his positional play, and IMHO he will get better.

If at the end of the season we were told we were paying £7/8 m for a guy who is a squad player at the second ranked country in FIFA rankings, I am sure we would be ecstatic.

The reality is we have a guy who fits those criteria, except he is ours and we only paid £1m.

I don’t see Boyata being a big money sale soon similar to VVD, but , IMHO, he is one of the very few (only ?)RD signings we would make money on if we sold him after Euro Championships

  29. KILL ULTRA

We all know the agenda of Resolution 12 & those behind it; what is your agenda?

    My opinion, ofcourse.

  30. An Teach Solais on

For someone who states that he was an original signatory but no longer believes that Res12 will make it to Switzerland he is spending a lot of time trying to gather information about on going expenditure.

If I had lost interest in a project I would not be giving a damn about how private individuals spend their money on the project nor spending hours of my time questioning people who are trying to progress the project of which he (better put in /she as well, so as not to appear exclusive) has no interest in its success.

If he thinks that CFC is involved in funding then let him address his concerns there.

He may not be a member of the press but any flow of information at this juncture upon which in SMSM “investigative” journalism (copyright Feilim Mac Giolla Bhain) might use to criticise the Resolution should be resisted.

    Good post

Totally agree on our naivety, and that both RD and Broony should be ‘managing out’ the game by retaining possession

It’s very simple, if we have the ball the opposition can’t score.
