Moneyball student of the game

1434

The extent of Celtic’s pursuit of Ronny Deila can be seen from the fact that Peter Lawwell established a false identity before setting up a Norwegian football blog in early 2012 to allow him to pen this article titled, The Awesomeness of Ronny Deila.  There is a chance the blog wasn’t written by our CEO, but the appreciation of Ronny’s talent is clear.

No deal has been concluded, so it would be a mistake to get too worked up yet, but the fact that we have got to this stage clarifies where we are, and are not, looking.

Neil Lennon resigned two weeks ago and a whole series of names, most of whom are freely available and would be delighted to accept the Celtic job, have been hotly tipped by media and bookies alike.  Celtic will not be appointing the likes of Owen Coyle.  Suggestions, by many who like to knock the club, that they will make a dash for season ticket cash by big name are also wrong.

Roy Keane was a serious contender, wanted by some within the club.  He was in pole position a week ago, forcing those who only days earlier had proclaimed with great triumph that Neil resigned due to budget constraints (he didn’t) to re-write their script, but Roy had other plans.  As did some at Celtic.

The club have been busy looking for an intelligent, technically gifted, coach.  One who has a track record of innovation, improving players and improving teams.  Ronny will not sell tickets on the basis of his own identity, become none of us knew him, but it was absurd to suggest Celtic would look for a short term fix with enormous Champions League qualifiers looming a few weeks away.

By any measure Ronny is a student of the game, a “Moneyball” candidate, according to the above ‘Awesomeness’ article.  We don’t need the archetypal British shouter-manager, renowned for his inspirational abilities.  You can get the guy who puts the cones out to do the shouting.  We don’t need a media darling either.  Someone already alerted me to the fact that surely ‘Ronny brings it on himself’, whatever the media decide ‘it’ is, and the manager doesn’t need an Irish granny.

I’ve not seen too much of Lennoxtown but what I have seen is a campus with talented coaches, fitness experts, nutritionists, sports scientists, scouts and analysts.  We need a manager in tune with this approach to the game.  Someone who will dovetail with this infrastructure, who intuitively recognises its value without needing to be told.

These appointments are always a risk, but if we’re looking for someone to fulfil this criteria, we’ll do very well. I’ve yet to back a managerial appointment by our board in 10 years writing this stuff. This could be about to change.

Portsmouth are not a bigger club than Celtic. They, fortunately for them, trade in a larger and more financially successful footballing market.

With regards my apparent contradiction. i do not believe Peter Lawell makes budgetary, financial or policy decisions with regards the overall running of our club and by that I mean he is told the policy, the financial constraints and the budget to which he has to adhere. He is not working in an industry were he can truely market a profit for the company or a major dividend for it’s shareholders. His job is to balance the books or keep the loss’s to a minimum. Within the restrictions of his role under that guidance I do not believe he is worth the salary he is afforded within the Scottish football market. What he does appear to have been afforded is the ability to manipulate the financial situation within the confines of the overall policy, budgetary, and financial constraints to facilitate a larger bonus for himself and I imagine those working with him to facilitate his objectives.

Although i understand and accept that the football on the park and in particular the SPFL and the Cahmpions League I believe he medals with the assistance of John parks far too much in determining the squad members of our team without the agreement of the football manager in place. I believe Neil Lennon has had more than his fair share of players enforced upon him whom he felt were not good enough for his club when overall the cost of 3 or 4 of the unwanted players last season would have purchased the player he wanted (my understanding). That to me is unacceptable. Is this what Paul67 is referring to when he state “dovetail with the infrastructure”?it is obvious that this policy strategy’s aim is to maximise profit from 1+ players being sold on rather than the potential profit from just 1 player. One of the major determining factors for PL’s bonus, in my understanding and please correct me if I am wrong, is that a bonus is paid for player sale profit no matter whether company make a profit for that particular year.

So yes there was an apparent contradiction in my previous post to you but hopefully this one fills in the gaps.

You are correct that our terminology would have to be better defined but I will not be hedged in by the simplistic formula of going rate because I believe all the other clubs are overpaying.

If we employed our recognised club strategy, we should be recruiting a young and hungry CEO willing to work for a fraction of PL’s remuneration but more willing to bust a gut.

What’s Bobo Balde doing these days?

I agree. When he went to Barca I said to the guys in my work I just don’t see where this guy fits in that team.

Wenger is not taking him back and that speaks volumes. He has similar players in already who are just as good as Fabregas was for the Gunners. Ramsay and Wilshire look special players IF they can stay fit.

John Collins was a star midfielder for Celtic during the 1990s. Souness tried to sign him from Hibs for Rangers 9 in a row team but, being a Celtic supporter, JC signed for Celtic from Hibs. We had a very poor team at the time and his only trophy with Celtic was the Scottish Cup. He left us to play for Monaco and reached the CL semi finals. I think he won French domestic trophies with Monaco. He left them to play with Fulham in EPL.

As a manager, he won the League Cup with Hibs. He went to manage a French team and I don’t think they won anything. He was Director of Football at Livingston for a while and is now a mefia pundit. Very articulate, smart and knowledgeable about football.

John Collins managed in Belgium and had a little success there. I think he left Tommy Craig in charge when he left. I believe it was always a short term agreement.

He has never stayed anywhere too long. In fairness I think if John done reasonably well at Celtic as No2 and got offered a big job elsewhere he would be off like a shot. He is an ambitious fella. Not short of confidence. I like confident people. They are good to have around.

Time alone will tell. But I’d rather be going into the qualifiers with Sammi than without him. Unless of course we go and recruit players of a higher calibre than him. Even then I think Sammi’s loyalty to us deserved a reciprocal. That is just my sentimental side talking.

How long before our first qualifier?

  16. MWD

Throughout the continent some of the biggest clubs manager’s do not take responsibility for the signing of players, they may and probably should have their say, but what is the point in a scouting network a head scout etc. whose sole job it is to find rough diamonds, if the manager doesn’t buy into it and wants their own way?

A manager’s job at some of these massive clubs is to get the best out the players and utilize a system that will allow this (as well as manage the coaching and development side of the club).

Not saying PL should take on the role of a sporting director – because he’s not qualified for it – but I don’t personally see the problem in that setup.

  17. Collins as a coach?? Can’t see it myself. Deila, is a training ground coach, is that not the whole point. He worked under a director of football jostein flo in Norway, therefore why would we employ a training ground manager to work beside another training ground manager??. Just doesn’t make sense. He’ll employ his own assistant, someone who shares his football philosophy. Not a Collins, who would debate all day long with him. More than likely we might however see a director of football. I realise he moved down under some years ago, but my shout would be Paul Mcstay.. He has been involved in sports agency work, and obtained good business acumen since retiring from the game. Would be a perfect Director of Football for CFC !

  18. Is there anybody on our books that can play lone striker. Is there anybody on our books playing up front with the aerial presence that Sammi had. I know he wasn’t the best it the game, but who do we have on our books, today, who could play the Sammi role in Europe?

Wilshire looked a phenomenon when he first appeared on the scene. I know he has suffered from injury and I know that has set him back. However, i have noticed that he fancies himself as a bit of a hard man. His willingness to be confrontational with his opponents last season, to be honest, made him look like a bit of a ned instead of a classy midfielder. It also told me that he will not fulfil his potential if he proceeds in the same manner.

I think it was Bada Bing was asking me about it a wee while ago, when I began to get totally fed up with SKY, which had a mind of its own. Some days it worked, other days it didn’t (or at least not very well).

Enjoyed the article, Paul67. I hope we get our man or someone very like him. If he gets our team playing like Johanssen, we will have acquired a winner, imo. We can look forward to seeing a lot more of the old “pass and move”. My auld Dad was of an equal opinion today.
