Moneyball student of the game

1434

The extent of Celtic’s pursuit of Ronny Deila can be seen from the fact that Peter Lawwell established a false identity before setting up a Norwegian football blog in early 2012 to allow him to pen this article titled, The Awesomeness of Ronny Deila.  There is a chance the blog wasn’t written by our CEO, but the appreciation of Ronny’s talent is clear.

No deal has been concluded, so it would be a mistake to get too worked up yet, but the fact that we have got to this stage clarifies where we are, and are not, looking.

Neil Lennon resigned two weeks ago and a whole series of names, most of whom are freely available and would be delighted to accept the Celtic job, have been hotly tipped by media and bookies alike.  Celtic will not be appointing the likes of Owen Coyle.  Suggestions, by many who like to knock the club, that they will make a dash for season ticket cash by big name are also wrong.

Roy Keane was a serious contender, wanted by some within the club.  He was in pole position a week ago, forcing those who only days earlier had proclaimed with great triumph that Neil resigned due to budget constraints (he didn’t) to re-write their script, but Roy had other plans.  As did some at Celtic.

The club have been busy looking for an intelligent, technically gifted, coach.  One who has a track record of innovation, improving players and improving teams.  Ronny will not sell tickets on the basis of his own identity, become none of us knew him, but it was absurd to suggest Celtic would look for a short term fix with enormous Champions League qualifiers looming a few weeks away.

By any measure Ronny is a student of the game, a “Moneyball” candidate, according to the above ‘Awesomeness’ article.  We don’t need the archetypal British shouter-manager, renowned for his inspirational abilities.  You can get the guy who puts the cones out to do the shouting.  We don’t need a media darling either.  Someone already alerted me to the fact that surely ‘Ronny brings it on himself’, whatever the media decide ‘it’ is, and the manager doesn’t need an Irish granny.

I’ve not seen too much of Lennoxtown but what I have seen is a campus with talented coaches, fitness experts, nutritionists, sports scientists, scouts and analysts.  We need a manager in tune with this approach to the game.  Someone who will dovetail with this infrastructure, who intuitively recognises its value without needing to be told.

These appointments are always a risk, but if we’re looking for someone to fulfil this criteria, we’ll do very well. I’ve yet to back a managerial appointment by our board in 10 years writing this stuff. This could be about to change.

I would suggest any potential signings would be held off until the new boss is in. A blue chip signing by him would certainly help the fans take to him.

Not saying Gordon is blue chip but signing players without a gaffer wouldn;t go down well.

Any German Bhoys who are partial to a Franziskaner Weißbier and have a Netto nearby, they are selling 2 crates for €21.50 a saving of 28%. Works out at 54 cents a bottle or €1.08 a litre. Need to buy 2 crates to get it at that price, 40 bottles an evenings work for some on here ;-).

“Why wouldn’t you pcik other football clubs (in any league) with comparable turnover or market cap?”

For the reasons outlined in my post that you have not addressed. Football clubs do not make money. They do not need a smart money man to make them money when that is not their intention

“You think the CEO of Celtic should all be remunerated on the basis of producing a financial dividend for shareholders? Not football results then? Sorry – you’ve got me beat with that logic.”

I am guessing that you did not read on a few posts where I corrected that ambiguity.

    ——————————————————————————————

Sorry you are wrong – football clubs DO make money – it’s called turnover. They then spend the money – with the aim of putting a winning team on the park. There are overheads to running this kid of operation including management such as the CEOs remuneration. Celtic has operated as a PLC for some time – you know this already. They have an obligation to get the best people. Could they do it cheaper? No doubt. But the argument centred around whether the Celtic CEO gets “paid too much”. From a standing start I can tell you that, with a question that loose we will not reach a satisfactory agreement on the answer. “Too much” is too vague. What I’m saying is that it depends on whether the question being asked is relative or absolute. If absolute, then ot becomes a moral question. If relative then we need to be comparing like with like.

I did read your follow up but it reads like you’re talking about issuing dividends – which I wasn’t referring to. Here’s what you said about benchmarking CEO pay :

“My benchmark would be to see what salary is paid to DD’s henchmen CEO in his other industries which are more profitable for him and more expensive. Are they all earning around £1m per year for producing so little in financial dividend?”

You suggest a comparison of the Celtic CEO’s remuneration with some of Dermot Desmond’s other business’s CEO’s. Makes absolutely no sense – even in the (incorrect) context you set of football clubs not making money. All football clubs make and spend money. The objective should be to fully support the sporting enterprise. Therefore we should be comparing the Celtic CEO remuneration with other like entities! As I say – why not find an example in the same kind of business (football). If all the CEOs in football do the same kind of job (and they do!) – the comparison would be more valid than picking a totally different industry. I was having a look for an example of a club in another country with a similar turnover to Celtic but it’s tricky trying to work at the same time as browsing the web without getting caught….

  10. Did John Collins not win the League Cup with Hibs? I also thought he left and was not sacked. He has also experienced European football at a very high level with Monaco has coached and played in England.

Hibs fans in my work give Collins no praise for that and say it was Mowbray’s young guns that won it. None of them like Collins. For a club that has underachieved for decades I have no idea how they can’t give the manager praise. John Collins was the best manager they had in years.

They also are aware of the players going to Petrie’s house to get Collins fired. He gave in to their demands. The reasons given were bullying so I am told. I asked the boys at work to explain and they said the players were being worked too hard.

These guys were happy with this. They said Collins flashed his 6 pack regulalry and said to the players they should be of similar build. Collins offered to take any of them on at sit ups and nobody did. He can apparently do thousands at a time. John Collins challenged the players to beat him in a running competition. I think he was early 40’s and not one player could out lap him. Some dropped out very early.

I was amazed that they were happy to see the back of a guy who was trying to change the culture at a club who at the time had talented young players who were in more pubs than Scotland squads.

It may not be everyone’s cup of tea of management and maybe these stories are slightly exaggerated but a fit team helps.

Hibernian fans seem obssessed with having a cool team with flair players who socialise with the fans rather than a winning team. Crazy stuff. John Collins would do me at Celtic in a coaching capacity.

Looks like we’ve missed out on fabragas as well now because of this managerial malaise….

    Kenny Miller as well

  15. Since Big Jock Stepped down we have attracted the following to the managerial post:-

Billy McNeil- rookie manager- a few months at Clyde and a year with Aberdeen

David Hay- rookie- one year at Motherwell

Billy McNeill- brought back after being in charge of TWO relegated English clubs

Liam Brady- rookie manager- 1st post

Frank Connor- caretaker but no rookie- given 4 games and was undefeated on leaving

Lou Macari- 5th club managed and 9 years experience. He lasted a year- a poor year

Tommy Burns- rookie – 2nd club- 2 years experience- unlucky but only one cup win

Billy Stark- 3 games as caretaker- undefeated

Wim Jansen- experienced- 15 years in management and 5 as Head Coach. recruited from Japanese football- left after one glorious winning year- no achievement post-Celtic

Jo Venglos- 32 years in management when he came but was manager of Oman when he arrived. Left after a year

John Barnes- Rookie manager- 1st job- did nothing of note after us. Lasted 8 months

Kenny Dalglish- experienced (15 years and 3 previous clubs) but uncommitted- saw out 4 months of Barnes era, mostly on the golf course.

MON- 13 years experience with 5 clubs

WGS- 9 years experience with 2 previous clubs

Tony Mowbray- 7 years experience with 3 different clubs

    NFL- rookie

So, where does this expectation come from that we are capable of attracting sought after managers with a winning European record?

MON had one prior Eufa tie which he lost, same with WGS.

I keep saying that we invent new ways to call the club a disgrace by failing us. We have never recruited top drawer highly sought after managers. We have created a few but that is not where we have recruited. Some rookies have failed but so j=have some experienced ones. A couple of rookies did well but not well enough (McNeil and Burns) but there is no obvious template.

The commonsense deduction from the above list is that we should appoint a caretaker from within but employ him for more than 4 matches.

So, Dermot tried to get Keano on board, and now Peter is going down a different road. Could be the right road, maybe the wrong road, could be a song in there somewhere, along the road. The fact is now that Danny has been sidelined, we need to replace the coaching staff, not just Neil Lennon. So if it is Ronny, he is going to need a lot of help, maybe a John Collins on board who knows? But whoever it is needs to make it clear to Celtic, nobody leaves unless on my say so, add 2-3 to first team squad, and bring 2-3 into the 25 for the full season ahead. Now, let’s get to work.
