Moneyball student of the game

1434

The extent of Celtic’s pursuit of Ronny Deila can be seen from the fact that Peter Lawwell established a false identity before setting up a Norwegian football blog in early 2012 to allow him to pen this article titled, The Awesomeness of Ronny Deila.  There is a chance the blog wasn’t written by our CEO, but the appreciation of Ronny’s talent is clear.

No deal has been concluded, so it would be a mistake to get too worked up yet, but the fact that we have got to this stage clarifies where we are, and are not, looking.

Neil Lennon resigned two weeks ago and a whole series of names, most of whom are freely available and would be delighted to accept the Celtic job, have been hotly tipped by media and bookies alike.  Celtic will not be appointing the likes of Owen Coyle.  Suggestions, by many who like to knock the club, that they will make a dash for season ticket cash by big name are also wrong.

Roy Keane was a serious contender, wanted by some within the club.  He was in pole position a week ago, forcing those who only days earlier had proclaimed with great triumph that Neil resigned due to budget constraints (he didn’t) to re-write their script, but Roy had other plans.  As did some at Celtic.

The club have been busy looking for an intelligent, technically gifted, coach.  One who has a track record of innovation, improving players and improving teams.  Ronny will not sell tickets on the basis of his own identity, become none of us knew him, but it was absurd to suggest Celtic would look for a short term fix with enormous Champions League qualifiers looming a few weeks away.

By any measure Ronny is a student of the game, a “Moneyball” candidate, according to the above ‘Awesomeness’ article.  We don’t need the archetypal British shouter-manager, renowned for his inspirational abilities.  You can get the guy who puts the cones out to do the shouting.  We don’t need a media darling either.  Someone already alerted me to the fact that surely ‘Ronny brings it on himself’, whatever the media decide ‘it’ is, and the manager doesn’t need an Irish granny.

I’ve not seen too much of Lennoxtown but what I have seen is a campus with talented coaches, fitness experts, nutritionists, sports scientists, scouts and analysts.  We need a manager in tune with this approach to the game.  Someone who will dovetail with this infrastructure, who intuitively recognises its value without needing to be told.

These appointments are always a risk, but if we’re looking for someone to fulfil this criteria, we’ll do very well. I’ve yet to back a managerial appointment by our board in 10 years writing this stuff. This could be about to change.

My thanks to Liam, from East Kilbride, who donated his prize memento, a Lladro replica World Cup trophy, commissioned by the Spanish FA in 1978, and acquired by Liam in 1982.  It will be auctioned on Saturday with proceeds going to our Mary’s Meals school kitchen appeal.  You can get involved in the auction, or keep an eye on it as it happens, here.  The auction takes place at Great Western Auctions, on Dumbarton Road.

  1. Greenock women don’t scare me – I married a girl from Kilsyth!

I need to go to Celtic to pick up some strips for charity in Australia so see you tomorrow and remember

    Keep the Faith

Ps saw Paul 67 on the tele and said to my family I know him! It’s great to have our heroes! Blog is doing well – it holds Celtic to account believe me.

  2. Cant disagree with any of the article…..pleased we are not rolling out another mediocre EPL wash out.

The principle of appointing Delia or someone similar is the correct strategy IMO but whoever is spending and wasting money/resources on “projects’ needs to stop or move on really.

The playing squad needs to be kept together for as long as possible to maximise its playing potential at anyone time and NOT be sold from under the feet of the manager every season…….any transfer depreciation or value lost by keeping a player needs to be offset against group CL revenues(or not)

If the present strategy/gambling fails for just 2 successive seasons then we are in a whole world of financial sheite……

We should NOT be selling players to boost the P&L Accounts to give PL a bigger bonus…..and I just realised the irony…….

    P&L Accounts……..PL……!

I was going on about moneyball the concept. I’ve seen the movie. I don’t research baseball executives that to the best of my recollection never got a mention or a credit in the movie. I saw it years ago and it was discussed on here years ago too.

Did you actually google after I posted about lubo and the KOK or did you know all about Sandy before then? Not that it makes a jot of difference to what I personally was posting about.

Welcome to the best club in the world Ronny

  6. Mr. Wallace

Big John Hughes got a wee bit of criticism for being very candid about some of Big Jock’s failings, thereby giving our pressmen another excuse to try to rubbish Big Jock.

You were more guarded in what you said in your book but the implied criticism was still there in the story of your own transfer to Palace.

Do you think Big Jock’s reputation can cope with a bit of “warts and all” revision?

  7. Willie Wallace……The “real deal” Wallace?

    Nah…its a wind up……. LOL

  8. Hail hail Willie great to see you on again.

  11. I really can’t believe that Celtic are prepared to take the gamble on Delia. Im hearing “now is the time, what have we got to lose? The very thing that keeps the operation ticking over CL money. Without a credible challenge for the league Celtic have two main but crucial objectives. Win the league and qualify for group stages CL. Nothing else really matters in the grand scheme of things.

So with that in mind who would you back to get us there. Someone with next to no european experience who has done well in Norway but with all due respect ive seen the standard in Norway and its not great.

Or someone like Steve Clarke who has already worked with the best players and has that know how. Who is the gamble here?

Are we really needing to re-invent the wheel because the way i see it get into CL group stages for the next two years and we blow domestic rivals away maybe even put one of them down for good.

I was surprised(although i shouldnt have been) how many people see Delia as the correct fit.

The public want what the public get.

This is the mother of all gambles and being so close to losing last year im surprised the happy clappers are willing to gamble again.

Don’t qualify for the CL and a man with his experience could be ruined by the fallout.

    Play it safe Celtic.

When they went bust I thought my paranoia would go away – it would seen not

When I read CQN yesterday I felt I was being sold Mr Deila ??? Today I feel I am being prepared for the news that Mr Delia is our new manager

I have no idea if he is good or good enough for Celtic – but I will bac him if he is

My paranoia is based on P67 writing style – I assume it’s a done deal and all that’s needed us white smoke – Paul are you testing reaction on behalf of PL – how can you be so assumptive in your theory

As for my opinion – we are not an experiment – I want the real deal – first choice Moyes second Clarke third McKay

What a coup for Big Jock, signing Wispy from under Rangers’ (blue)noses.

And his goals were a vital part of our greatest ever season.

  19. sid – I appreciate your concerns and I think they’re totally valid but there’s not a manager in the world that could guarantee qualification.

What we do know is that he likes a 4-3-3 and I would say that we’ve already got the players that can make this formation work.

  20. I have not yet had the chance to read the replies to Paul’s article so this may have been answered

Paul you state that Neil did not resign because of budgetary constraints. Can you please advise me why he did resign then?

  21. Kojo if John Collins gets a coaching job with Celtic will you support him .I look at hibs now , they seem to get rid of there managers to easy. John Collins wasn’t doing to bad when he was there,i believe some of the players weren’t happy about him being a fitness fanatic , Michael Stewart was one of them who didn’t like John Collins , John Hughes was another who like Pat forget his second name .got the bullet to soon, Big Butcher I thing will dodge the bullet ,for now

They’ve still not reported on Lisbon 67 they’re so far behind the times!

  23. Frantic calls being made from London Road to Vatican City.

If they’d only asked CQN we could have told them:

But what gives the conclave smoke, or the “fumata,” its thick, distinctive coloring is a certain chemical mixture.

According to the Vatican press office, the black smoke is produced by a mixture of potassium perchlorate, anthracene and sulphur.

The white smoke is a mixture of potassium chlorate, lactose and a pine resin, also known as Greek pitch.

I suspect he’s been a bit interpretive there. I personally don’t think it was any one of the many reasons we’ve seen on here for his resignation but a combination of some or all of them.

If only we’d had the web and CQN in those days.

I can imagine the flouncing at HT on CQN.

Every new manager will require to put his own stamp on the team. Going to be an extremely interesting summer to see who the new boss brings in. I notice his squad at Stromsgodset was mostly Norwegian, I’m sure our scouting department will be utilised fully however.

    Bring it on!
