Morals and hypocrisy, McCoist nails it, then asks you to bend over

1156

Do you remember the early days of Celtic Quick News when one wit suggested this was a blog for accountants?  Our early years did a great deal to bring a wider understanding of accounts and finance to Celtic fans – which was a good thing.

Today your fan of Scottish football needs to know about more than the game and amortisation, a semester or two in law school is an enormous advantage.  We touch on legal matters here but last night I enjoyed reading the forensic analysis on the wonderful Duff and Phelps on the Web 3D Law blog.  It’s worth 10 minutes of your day, each day, the most recent blog especially.  I also assume you are all keeping an eye on the substantial thoughts on Paul McConville’s blog.  If not, I want to know why.

So much for accounts and the law, today I want to discuss philosophy with you.

When football-types talk about morality and hypocrisy they are usually worth listening to, if only for comedic value.  Anyone experiencing the Scottish media will not doubt that morality is subjective and chameleon in nature.  This question has exercised great minds for centuries, if only they had the benefit of our effervescent radio luminaries.
Despite being metaphorically surrounded by morally opportunistic hypocrites, Ally McCoist felt so secure in his demands for Rangers that he didn’t dodge the issue yesterday.

When asked if Rangers should be kicked out of the SPL he accepted it “might be the right thing to do morally and people will have their own opinions on it, with differences far and varied.

“There’s an argument the right thing to do is for Rangers to go down to the Third Division and that might be the case if it’s a Newco after liquidation.

“But is it the correct thing to do for Scottish football?  Probably not. Everybody’s got a dilemma and that’s why there are so many opinions on it.

“Whether people like it or not, Rangers and Celtic are different because of the size and magnitude of the two clubs.

“Supporters of other clubs and some Old Firm supporters say you can’t have rules for some clubs and not for others.

“In an ideal world, that would be 100 per cent correct. I would absolutely and totally agree with that.

“But the fact of the matter is we’re asking if it would be good for the rest of the SPL if Rangers went down to the Third Division? The answer has to be no.

“I don’t envy the people who have to make that decision. I can understand the hypocrisy of it but Rangers and Celtic are different.”

Rangers are different – no dispute about that, Ally.  Celtic are different again, but if it is hypocritical and morally wrong to provide support for these clubs which has never been extended to a smaller club, we cannot subvert our sport – and remember, the word SPORT implies that outcomes are determined on a level playing field – Rangers must be treated no differently than Gretna.

And just one correction for Ally: liquidation-and-phoenix would not see Rangers drop to the Third Division.  A Newco in the Third Division would not have dropped from anywhere, it would be a new company and new football team.  Rangers would, in these circumstances, go pop!

Starry- I’m hoping there are a few good banners there today, pointing out the differences between us and them

  2. Good morning friends from a fairly bright, sunny but breezy East KIlbride.

Quite emotional today with the thought that I’ll soon be travelling to my last ever Celtic v Rangers game. Well, laughter and happiness are emotions, right?

Had an absolutely fantastic evening last night at The Kano Foundation end of season bash and great to meet so many CQN-ers. Apologies to those that I’ve since forgotten but a big Sunday ‘hello’ to…MWD, Celticrollercoaster, The Token Tim, Tommytwiststommyturns, Kingoh, Sannabhoy, bjmac, praecepta. And even got to shake the hand of the great man himself, Paul67. What a community we have on here.

Enjoy today Bhoys and Ghirls but, more than anything, stay safe

  3. I also think the ref will be even more MIB’d up that usual and for that reason alone I think we should all applaud and cheer every decision that is given against us.

Remember what happened in 1999 when Hugh Dallas was struck by a coin. After the match Celtic and Celtic supporters were blamed. I was at that game and it was a horrible atmosphere. I couldn’t believe the match reports after- they had no correlation with my own experience of actually being there. If anything happens today, then I will not be surprised if Celtic and it’s fans are blamed to some extent, regardless of actual guilt.

Anyway, how more galling could it be than to be applauded and cheered for every “wrong” or controversial or penalising decision you make? To know that plan A isn’t working? That today at least, the result doesn’t really matter.

Does it really matter who wins today? The game’s up for Rangers (IA), they know it and we know it. This could be the last chance for others to try to show that “we are as bad as them”.

The only and best way to sing the Billy boys is to laugh it. why not extend the same courtesy to the refs by cheering their incorrect decisions that are meant to affect our team and us?

And you get to have a good old laugh at a Celtic Rangers (IA) match.

Laughter is the best medicine csc

    Good morning bhoys

Re the demo to humpdthen .

the SPL chairmen voting for on the CHEATS CHARTER on Monday ,must be really confused .

On the one hand they must be thinking that they are being asked to vote in the club formally known as ragers .

Then they watch 5,000/7,000/10,000 (it’s like a Jelivik transfer bid) walking to Hampden demanding they vote against it .

It’s like an old episode of SOAP .

C,mon you bhoys in GREEN .

  5. 67Heaven:

Never ever forget… they could not have done what they did without the endorsement (encouragement) of the banks and the media (and the SFA/SPL/Authority).

They can hate if they want to, I could hate too but I’d rather not.

Only could find the original version of this song, if anyone has a version of someone singing a Celtic version I would love to see it.

    Oh Hampden Park was crowded

    The fans began to roar

    The Rangers fans were singing

Of the sash their father wore.

    But very soon

    The changed their tune

When the Celtic plan was set,

For Lennox crossed to Billy McNeill

And the ball was in the net!

    Chorus

    Putting on the agony

    Putting on the style

One, two, three, four lovely goals

    Scoring all the while.

There’s nothing in this whole wide world

That makes you want to smile

    Like watching Glasgow Celtic

    Putting on the style

    Now Lennox he caused trouble

    With his running through

And from a long ball from defence

    He made it number two.

All that day he worked his way

    To make the Rangers prance

And the Celtic End went round the bend

    Doing the victory dance

    Chorus

    Now just before the interval

    Came goal number three

And this time it was slotted in

    By young george Connelly

    in his first cup final

    A day he’ll not forget

When he walked the ball round big John Greig

    Into the Rangers net.

    Chorus

    Chalmers was our centre

He gave his all and more

And to him fell the honour

    Of scoring number four.

A dribble down the left wing

    A shot which goalward sped

And once again the Scottish Cup

    Was resting at Parkhead.

    Chorus

  11. Oops, and hello to Celtic Soul Brother too…

Right, off to early Mass in the expectation that I might not be in a fit state for the evening mass later on…

    Take care everybody,

Alistair McCoist gives us an interesting lesson in moral philosophy, perhaps without realising it. He seems to say that to relegate Rangers to the Third Division would be the ‘moral ‘ thing to do. But then he makes the amazing leap in judgement by saying that it would not be the ‘correct’ thing to do. This leaves us to conclude that to do the correct thing would be immoral. Well I ask you – is this where we are in Scotland in the 21st century? He then goes on to say that Rangers (and he adds Celtic) are different and should have different treatment from other clubs. Well I do not remember any such clamour in the early 1990’s for separate treatment for Celltic. So that seems to leave Rangers standing alone where they always have been. After all – ‘they are the peepil’!

  13. Morning all,

40 minutes walk from Paradise and it’s looking like a perfect day for football. Blue sky, sun and hardly a breath of wind. Deceptively cold though.

Been up since 7.30 with that knot in the stomach from knowing that there’s a big party this afternoon. Off to the game nice and early, cup of tea and some chips from one of the vans and just soak in the build up and the atmosphere. Into town for a couple of beers after.

  20. huge challenge for a young team today, leaving the honest awarding of red cards to us but not to them issue aside, Rangers exploited our weaknesses well at the halting site. we can expect them to do the same especially if we don’t have pace like JF. Days like this are made for lennie
