Morals and hypocrisy, McCoist nails it, then asks you to bend over

1156

Do you remember the early days of Celtic Quick News when one wit suggested this was a blog for accountants?  Our early years did a great deal to bring a wider understanding of accounts and finance to Celtic fans – which was a good thing.

Today your fan of Scottish football needs to know about more than the game and amortisation, a semester or two in law school is an enormous advantage.  We touch on legal matters here but last night I enjoyed reading the forensic analysis on the wonderful Duff and Phelps on the Web 3D Law blog.  It’s worth 10 minutes of your day, each day, the most recent blog especially.  I also assume you are all keeping an eye on the substantial thoughts on Paul McConville’s blog.  If not, I want to know why.

So much for accounts and the law, today I want to discuss philosophy with you.

When football-types talk about morality and hypocrisy they are usually worth listening to, if only for comedic value.  Anyone experiencing the Scottish media will not doubt that morality is subjective and chameleon in nature.  This question has exercised great minds for centuries, if only they had the benefit of our effervescent radio luminaries.
Despite being metaphorically surrounded by morally opportunistic hypocrites, Ally McCoist felt so secure in his demands for Rangers that he didn’t dodge the issue yesterday.

When asked if Rangers should be kicked out of the SPL he accepted it “might be the right thing to do morally and people will have their own opinions on it, with differences far and varied.

“There’s an argument the right thing to do is for Rangers to go down to the Third Division and that might be the case if it’s a Newco after liquidation.

“But is it the correct thing to do for Scottish football?  Probably not. Everybody’s got a dilemma and that’s why there are so many opinions on it.

“Whether people like it or not, Rangers and Celtic are different because of the size and magnitude of the two clubs.

“Supporters of other clubs and some Old Firm supporters say you can’t have rules for some clubs and not for others.

“In an ideal world, that would be 100 per cent correct. I would absolutely and totally agree with that.

“But the fact of the matter is we’re asking if it would be good for the rest of the SPL if Rangers went down to the Third Division? The answer has to be no.

“I don’t envy the people who have to make that decision. I can understand the hypocrisy of it but Rangers and Celtic are different.”

Rangers are different – no dispute about that, Ally.  Celtic are different again, but if it is hypocritical and morally wrong to provide support for these clubs which has never been extended to a smaller club, we cannot subvert our sport – and remember, the word SPORT implies that outcomes are determined on a level playing field – Rangers must be treated no differently than Gretna.

And just one correction for Ally: liquidation-and-phoenix would not see Rangers drop to the Third Division.  A Newco in the Third Division would not have dropped from anywhere, it would be a new company and new football team.  Rangers would, in these circumstances, go pop!

One* team in Glasgow,
There’s only one team in Glasgow.
One team in Glasgow,
There’s only one team in Glasgow.

*excluding, juniors, youths, lower leagues, amateurs and Celtic Ladies.

Pop!  And they’re gone!

  1. Who was it that said the relationship between the hun, the media, the referees, the banks, the police, an Edinburgh Jury, and the pie shop was incestuous?

  2. Amidst all the noise and colour today, let’s not forget who has guided to us a position of playing possibly the last game v them ever where the actual result has no material significance.

Stand up for Mr Neil Lennon.

Had to laugh yesterday as they discussed on radio what it would mean to be a supporter of the winning club – how winning this game somehow conferred ‘bragging rights’ for the summer. Aye right! Your team has disappeared in a puff of blue smoke, the club shown to be financially bankrupt while the worst manager in living memory shows himself to be morally bankrupt and shameless. Hmmmm, not sure there’s too much there I’d be bragging about.

My advice is Celtic songs and liquidation chants only today. They will show themselves up by giving us their full repertoire of bile and if we are winning by a few I wouldn’t rule out an attempted pitch invasion.I think their fans could lose it big style.Be careful today everyone!!!

  5. Tom, I agree and in their defence, they are spawned of others evils.

McCoist should be asked if this “special treatment” should extent to referee decisions.

Such as decisions made to ensure a debt stricken club is the recipient of £15m champions league money for 3 years on the trot to keep the club alive. For the good of Scottish football, of course.

Or am I just being silly and paranoid and is it only in terms of corporate governance that Rangers are “a special case”.

There are so many “honest mistakes” from 2009-11 to pick from but the one I’ll never forget is motherwell’s goal disallowed against them late in a midweek game at Fir Park. Perfectly good goal, linesman’s flag raised for no apparent reason. Goal disallowed. Points saved for Rangers.

I’m more convinced than ever that steps were taken by referees to ensure the” health of the Scottish game ;-)” was preserved.

Anyways, looks like it was all in vain. We have the last laugh. Let’s go out on a high today bhoys!

  11. Today for me, is not only about watching the Celtic against thems, today is also about knowing this is the last time thems will have the courtesy of being at Celtic Park, their last opportunity to foist their bigotry and bile upon is, I firmly believe they will take that opportunity at every given minute today, in a few weeks time thems will be no more, I rejoice in that,

I hope that those no longer with us who suffered at the hands of these morons look down from above today and rejoice alongside us, for they like us deserve to celebrate, celebrate not only being Champions but the ultimate demise of the two headed snake,

    Thems are going going gone,

  18. Dan, when I saw that photo yesteday I cried for 20 mins. It’s the first time I’ve ever cried enough to flush out a contact lens.

    Fantastic photo.

  19. The last Glasgow derby in its current form? The last of a rivalry going back over 100 years? Good.

Now let’s make sure that the record book will show that we won the first game and we won the last game.

This game may not mean much in terms of the league table, but it is always good to beat the dark side. When they are down let’s give them something else to be down about.

I have worries about what their support might do. But let’s remember that the follow follow mob have shown that they do walk away when they don’t get their own way. A couple of early goals, a convincing victory and one end of the ground will be very quiet long before the final whistle is blown.

As always our players need to be very careful. Any hint of dissent or retaliation will be punished. And the tackles will be snapping in from the first whistle. We need to play football and the result will come.

Just wondering as it seems I am the only christian on here but thought would ask how peoples religious faith is getting then through these tough and turbulent times. For me God is there as a guiding light and too many forget that and I would like to know how many of you like me pray every night to god and put their faith in him that he will help us through this. Anyone else prepared to state that in God they trust?” [yes]

  27. Good morning my Celtic friends and Edward!

I’m not one for cracking posts that will live long in the memory so here we go……

My sainted mother used to try and bribe me with money if I didn’t go to the Celtic v Huns game, she was worried about my safety…. God bless her…… My dad was at ibrox when the disaster happened ……. That was a hard one as he came home a few hours late, we lost a great cousin that day, he was in the rangers end…….

My point, I will be happy if there’s not another game between Celts and gers.

Edward et al, I mean that sincerely.

    One love!
