More to gain from Croatia progressing than Japan

160

With 12 days before Celtic are back in action, Cameron Carter-Vickers and Aaron Mooy are now out of the World Cup and will soon be back in Glasgow, rested and ready for action.  This afternoon, either Josip Juranovic (Croatia) or Daizen Maeda (Japan) will also be out of the competition, while one will progress to the quarter finals.

Daizen is likely to be eased back into action gradually, I don’t expect him to see our next outing at Aberdeen.  Josip is the clear first choice at right back and with Alastair Johnston unable to play until the transfer window opens on 1 January, Josip is the player we are likely to miss most, if his stay in Qatar is extended again.

Winners of Croatia- Japan are likely to face Brazil (should they overcome S. Korea) at the quarter final stage on Friday.  If Josip is looking for a move, that would be a perfect theatre to showcase his talents.  You might also consider that it does our competitive advantage in the Japanese market any good if Japan continue to beat quality European sides.  Maybe best for Croatia to progress.

It’s a stretch, but if Japan or Croatia managed to overcome Brazil of S. Korea, one of them would be in Qatar until the final weekend or the tournament, after Celtic kick off against Aberdeen.

  1. I’ve always liked cricket, it goes back to being one of the few live sports on TV, when i was a wean……the new TV technology makes itmuch better nowadays ,someone was asking about the commentators earlier ,i think the ones on Sky are excellent, Atherton,Ward,Hussein ,Butcher, they explain situations brilliantly, without being condescending, biased? You bet,but it doesn’t bother me in the slightest….

  2. Cricket? I cannae stick it.

Always preferred US baseball as my bat and ball game; a bunch of us used to play Sunday arvo down Glasgow Green with the musical McCluskey brothers, Bobby Bluebell and the like.

But here, downunder, cricket’s very much a game of the people rather than a sport for well-to-dos.

Heh Mick; 33 on Sunday, 14 on Monday; howdya like them apples ;))

  3. Hi QUADRO

La Nenia has messed up our weather big time lol.

Never mind, our big Celtic Sunday in the Dubliner a week on

18 th Dec. should be a Christmas cracker, expecting an upsurge

in attendance after our Sydney visit from the bhoys.

P.s bat the baw, not for me 😜

  4. Aye; early summer and yesterday was blowing a chilly gale up the old dandenongs!

What time’s yer Dubliner debauchery kickoff?

Mrs Quad and I could take the motorbike oot for a wee toddle doon the watter ?

BTW Mick, I told the blog months back that John’s Socceroo brother Harry was a pretty good CB.

Not quite in the Ange mould, but a big braw, brawny Scots defender nonetheless.

The Socceroos did us proud Mick.

  5. Yes, big Harry surprised us, and I remember your

shout about him, not an Ange type right enough, but who

    knows.

Dubliner from 4 until dark o clock, singing and dancing as

Maeda can be proud of his efforts.

Performed creditably and with humility throughout.

    Deserved his goal tonight.

Hilarious watching Barasic continue his personal tailorised tribute to Tight Fit.

    “The Left back sleeps tonight”

Maeda did an Abada on him.

Celts Are Here Weblog need to get a grip with their content offerings.

Bankrupt “Barry Ferguson’s latest Celtic prediction”

    Really guys?

The O** F*** industry is bloated and contrived enough without so called Celtic fans chipping in.

And giving oxygen to a man who sent his players out to injure Celtic players just a year ago?

(Adam King and Mohammed Niang being the most successful on the night)

    Shameful (IMHO).

  8. To all who responded (SFTB, St Stivs, Jinkyredstar, David and a few others ….sorry I haven’t kept a record)

I know Kit well and have stayed with the family a couple of times. He is a peripatetic man in a similarly mobile industry plying his trade across global hotspots – but always keeping his base in Brisbane. My last contact with him was when he was in Azerbaijan (or as we say in Glasgow…”ASDA’S TO BUY JAM”)..I can’t trace his phone or (new?) address via the normal routes/directories. I may visit the other bars we used to swap tales in.

As for the CSCs in Brisbane, they are more fragmented than they once were and although I met many Brisbane Tims at the games Sydney (strangely enough in bars would you believe it!!) none could place yer man.

The main CSC in town that we visited a few tiimes was in a large pub called Mick O’Malleys….(HOME OF THE BRISBANE CELTS back then) – it’s gone, the only remnants now floating down Queen Street in the centre of the city being the two “Celtic/Mick O’Malley” CSC tops I bought there in 2009 and 2011. AND THEY STILL FIT!

(By the way…..tighten your seatbelts; the street level/outside bar that once rang to strains of “For it’s a grand auld team”, “Willie Maley” etc etc….has now been renamed as “The Pig and Whistle”. The last time I was here that pub was located nearer to the Brisbane River and was the only ‘Rangers’ bar -or I now call them”Rangers’ VAR”s – in town.

There are many reasons for being uncontactable deliberate and accidental. There are many ways of navigating the maize to find someone. But I think I’ll stop with the feelers and calling cards I’ve now left. Otherwise I feel I would be impinging on privacy.

If Kit picks up on any of the calling cards, I’ll let you know.

Oh…St Stivs…Re RAMIE….The last time I met him was in Perth when I went to visit our sadly departed friend Kano. Back then we had a few drinks in The Fenians pub (It’s still there but doesn’t show Celtic Games specifically). The main Celtic Bar – Rosie O’Grady’s has also gone and the CSC now runs out of the bar across the corner called Johnny Fox’s. It’s a much more sedate institution than the utter playground and rebel volcano that Rosie’s was.

Perth has changed, Sydney has changed, I’ll find out over the next few weeks if Brisbane has metamorphosed at all….and of course there are still other well loved locations to revisit, before I tie those walking boot laces into their final bow (however you pronounce it).

Conan Doyle did a Sherlock Holmes Story called ‘The Final Bow’ . perhaps I’ll have a reread and pick up some Holmesian tips to find kit….. “Elementary my dear Stewart”, he uttered as he plucked his violin and took a snort of Charlie!

Anyway….it’s 10.41am here, 24 degs with a peak of 31 forecast…I’ve done my early morning run and I better eat this breakfast before the oddly complimentary and colorful Mint Choc-Chip and Vanilla ice cream melts.

  13. Pity that JAPAN are out, as they were Talented, organized and very entertaining.

I was surprised how poor they were at Penalties, given how meticulous Japan as a Nation are in everything they do ?

But, its a game of Fitba and anything can happen….maybe nerves got the better of the Japanese boys at the penalty shoot out ?

Don’t know if you ever saw Kirtsty Alley in ‘Drop Dead Gorgeous’ a paean (no honest) to America’s gift to the world, the Annual Beauty Pageant in small town USA. In this case somewhere in Minnesota. Funny doesn’t cover it, though murder and mayhem might. Kirsty plays the Mom of one the contestants, Ellen Barkin another. Kirsten Dunst also stars, along with Allison Janney, Amy Adams, and one of the few main men characters big Mikey McShane. Madcap and bittersweet, with Kirtsty at her absolute comedy best. A film like no other.

Some weird scheduling going on at this World Cup. I know it’s tight for time to get leagues re-started, but why are Brazil and Croatia playing on Friday when they played yesterday, yet England and France don’t meet till Saturday when they played their last 16 fixtures on Sunday?

Not that Brazil had to over-exert themselves last night. You can only outplay who’s in front of you, but that 3rd goal of Richarlison was worthy of the 1970 or 1982 Brazil World Cup greats ,as was Vinicius’ exquisitely cool finish for the first goal.
