Motherwell 1-2 Celtic

1066

Paddy McCourt was the difference between the teams today as Celtic came from behind for the second time in three days to beat Motherwell at Celtic Park, securing second spot in the league.  Craig Higdon opened the scoring for Motherwell after 11 minutes with a header from a corner kick but Anthony Stokes levelled, also from a corner, two minutes later.  Substitute Gary Hooper scored the winner late on.

Despite a sprightly first minute Celtic were on the back foot for most of the opening period and it was no surprise Motherwell opened the scoring.  Nor was the manner in which they lost the goal a surprise.  Tom Hately crossed from a short corner which Celtic slept at, failing to mark-up.  The defence also pushed out in instalments, leaving Craig Higdon free six yards from goal to head home.

Celtic immediately pushed forward and Georgios Samaras flicked a Kris Commons header onto Stokes at the back post, who volleyed into the net.

A Commons free kick was blocked by Samaras, whose shot was saved.  Thomas Rogne headed a Commons’ corner on target but the ball was blocked on the line.  On the half hour mark Higdon drew a good save from Fraser Forster.

Four minutes into the second half Stokes should have given Celtic the lead when he latched onto a long ball from Daniel Majstorovic which evaded the defence but Darren Randolph closed the space.  On 54 minutes the lively Stokes cut-back for Commons who took one touch too many and was robbed.  Fraser Forster was called into action again soon thereafter when he blocked a Nicky Law effort.

Paddy McCourt replaced Samaras with 15 minutes to go and transformed the game.  On 79 minutes he collected the ball inside his own half, drifted through a nervous looking Motherwell midfield until he reached the edge of the D before feeding Stokes on the left.  Stokes made space before rifling the ball into the six yard box for Gary Hooper to score the winner.

Tim Clancy was shown a straight red card late on for kicking Gary Hooper.  If referee Charlie Richmond had taken an earlier opportunity to control Lasley or Jennings, Gary Hooper, James Forrest and Beram Kayal would perhaps have finished the game with fewer injuries.

McCall’s comment about Lasley and another midfielder Forbes? last season that they absolutely had to play against Celtic while carrying knocks tells us all we need to know abut the man.

If I can remember correctly they did not play the week before or after.

Although today was bad,the game last year with the boy Forbes will take a lot of beating,,,,how that boy stayed on the park defies belief????

HI paul. I learned three things today, our team badly needs an enforcer to protect our ball players. 2 AS has probably hit home , the MIB. Influence is very much in evidence , despite regans promise that an even playing field for all. 3. OH for an owner like the Qpr owner. A guy with a real feeling for his club ,

  4. Guys, didn’t watch the game as the wee man had a party so had a stroll round Strathclyde Park with the daughter hooked up to livescore.com. Was happy that we responded quickly to going behind and whilst it’s looked like we have turned the corner a few times before, we look more likely with Kayal back to bossing the middle and stokes playing great with Hooper getting a well deserved boot up the erse – one which he has responded to.

Still more than confident about the league…

  5. the long wait is over on

Massive result today against a background of a disgraceful refereeing performance.

Coming from behind to win as we have in 2 games this week shows character.

Keeping discipline in a game where youre being kicked with impunity shows character.

Early days in our recovery but still early days in the league, too.

As a regular knocker of Sammi I’m happy the big guy’s played so well for the last couple of games.

Does anyone else think Jennings shouldnt be allowed to play until this betting scandal has been cleared up. Maybe it puts pressure on referees not to send him off incase they get dragged into any upcoming trial or do you think that he just likes kicking us and the referee enjoys letting him do it.

Re the talk of enforcers and Martin O`Neill`s team-

I remember Celtic playing Man Utd in a preseason friendly in the USA in 2004 in a nothing game.

That wee loser Chris Eagles went in heavily on Alan Thompson and injured him; a daft challenge to make in a preseason friendly. Chris Sutton then followed Eagles about the park, waited for the right moment, and cemented him good and proper to exact retribution.

We need to get better at the dark arts …. it does not always have to be uber balant….

If we stood up for ourselves better the volumes of fouls would reduce, Gary Hoops would dramatically reduce the foul count against himself by mis controlling the odd ball and stretching through the ball onto the opposition centre half, preferably when we are a few goals up… make these twats think twice when they are kicking

More effort today, we only get kicked because we do not dish anything back out.

    ————————————–

I think Celtic players get kicked, without fear of reprisal, because of the crest on their jersey.

The inforcers you mention from MON’s team regularly got booked for a stray dirty look. Back then we faced MIB injustice, just as now, but we were so much better than R*ngers that no amount of honest mistakes could stop us.

Today Stokes got booked for a one-second outbust- what do you think would have happened if Dan or Vic67 actually commited a professional foul?

Anyone would have thought he was trying to get sent off today.

    Except the ref.

Then up pops the wee hooligan who gets sent off anyway.

Anyone have a bet on that?

  15. I dont know if this has been posted before but it happened

ArdMacha, i remember last season against MWell, Forbes booted everything that moved. I think he eventually got booked on his 8th tackle. He was then promptly subsituted for another clogger. Today Lasley and Jennings should have been off before half time. Great disciplined performance in midfield from Kayal and Victor.

    Some things never change!

It is time for Celtic FC to stand up for Celtic FC.

Before someone suffers a career or life threatening injury.

    Step up peter Lawell!

Actually I think today was/is the normal for the rest of the season.

Unless of course the board grow a pair!

    Each, that is.

  21. Myself and G64 were telling his son about the rotation system from the big huns, i.e you kick them you kick etc,ten men later back to the start.

Why the feck would you want to pay money to watch a sh1tey

    team like that?

Please note 11 of the 12 spl teams pay this system.

  22. parity of esteem…..some one wants to tell these huns ……be careful what you wish for

after today ..i am resolute in my position that nothing has changed

the MIB cheating is as it was and ,unless there is radical change , for ever shall be

I think, I think it was wee Jackie Mc who was done by Eagles.

In the row that escalated after Sutty gave Beckham a b.i.a.t.c.h slap for simply being there.

After that I think it was Thommo and Sutty in particular who made it their mission to seek retribution ‘law abiding citizen’ style. Any time he got the ball near another Celtic player – they saved Thommo or Sutty the 50 yard dash.

What a team to have pride in.

We would have all taken a bullet for them bhoys – something the mrs still doesnt get!
