Motherwell 1-2 Celtic

1066

Paddy McCourt was the difference between the teams today as Celtic came from behind for the second time in three days to beat Motherwell at Celtic Park, securing second spot in the league.  Craig Higdon opened the scoring for Motherwell after 11 minutes with a header from a corner kick but Anthony Stokes levelled, also from a corner, two minutes later.  Substitute Gary Hooper scored the winner late on.

Despite a sprightly first minute Celtic were on the back foot for most of the opening period and it was no surprise Motherwell opened the scoring.  Nor was the manner in which they lost the goal a surprise.  Tom Hately crossed from a short corner which Celtic slept at, failing to mark-up.  The defence also pushed out in instalments, leaving Craig Higdon free six yards from goal to head home.

Celtic immediately pushed forward and Georgios Samaras flicked a Kris Commons header onto Stokes at the back post, who volleyed into the net.

A Commons free kick was blocked by Samaras, whose shot was saved.  Thomas Rogne headed a Commons’ corner on target but the ball was blocked on the line.  On the half hour mark Higdon drew a good save from Fraser Forster.

Four minutes into the second half Stokes should have given Celtic the lead when he latched onto a long ball from Daniel Majstorovic which evaded the defence but Darren Randolph closed the space.  On 54 minutes the lively Stokes cut-back for Commons who took one touch too many and was robbed.  Fraser Forster was called into action again soon thereafter when he blocked a Nicky Law effort.

Paddy McCourt replaced Samaras with 15 minutes to go and transformed the game.  On 79 minutes he collected the ball inside his own half, drifted through a nervous looking Motherwell midfield until he reached the edge of the D before feeding Stokes on the left.  Stokes made space before rifling the ball into the six yard box for Gary Hooper to score the winner.

Tim Clancy was shown a straight red card late on for kicking Gary Hooper.  If referee Charlie Richmond had taken an earlier opportunity to control Lasley or Jennings, Gary Hooper, James Forrest and Beram Kayal would perhaps have finished the game with fewer injuries.

Remember Craig Beattie having a great game his second goal was a cracker, did he score the 2 goals that night?

I think the daily rankers had a cracked crest before that game because L/pool and chelski beat us in friendlies beforehand ,

  6. From what i have heard about the game today it looks like the opposition dished it out a bit……….Not sure that all of this is about they don’t do that against the dark side because they don’t want to, my thought is that they don’t because they know they wont get away with it against that mob. I have lost count of the times that opposition players should have been sent off against us and that’s just this season.

A Celtic-mad pal of mine was a trainee at Bradford in the ’80s and said that McCall was a total gent. That was before he went to R*ngers, though.

That made me laugh out loud and well up (parden the pun considering the day!) how sad am I !?!?

We could do worse than showing this present team some of those dvd’s for inspiration and comeraderie.

When you get that sense of togetherness on the pitch – the most magnificent support in the world feed off it like a drug; when those two are combined it just manifests itself from the butterflies wing to the tsunami.

(Although they must be mindful of the type of scenario today, where Stokes was booked for shouting to the ref from a distance yet Craigan gets nothing for screaming into the referees face)

Wee Jackie McNamara knew how to be cute – do you mind the cheeky left hook he chinned Hately with during a 22 man hand bags session – they were right at the back of the brawl where no one was looking (except one camara man!)

NIP IT IN THE BUD, CELTIC BOARD….THE TIME FOR ACTION IS NOW……

    It is no coincident that….

    1) they are “””over 10 points”””” so early in the season

    2) that we have circa 10 players injured

Every other team in the SPL are ‘lying down’ to them, and going for our jugular……they are ALL fighting for their very (financial) survival, since WHEN rankers go out of business, their already fraught financial situations will worsen dramatically overnight…

We’re up against it even more this season, and we need to address the situation NOW

…and, YES, I’m on again about BHOYCOTING ALL away games, including Hampden, IF the SFA don’t do something quick about all this…..all we ask for is fair refereeing…… Mothersmell should have been playing with less than 11 players by half-time and THEY all know it…

  10. parecepta –

I’ve went for 3 or more goals in the game (to cover my weekend losses) and also with 5 or more goals in the game (to make a wee profit for the weekend).

    Looking decent at the moment.

It’s also partly because teams think we are a soft touch and that kicking us is how you stop us. But of course, they have to be fairly confident of getting away with it.

Jennings would never have taken Commons out of the game a second time if he had been carded for the first. Lasley and Jennings would only have got one kick at Forrest had they been carded.

If a player is on a yellow then the likes of Forrest, Commons or Sammi can go at them confident that they will not hack at them or if they do they will get the player sent off. But when the referee allows three or four dangerous tackles before they get the book out then it becomes a whole lot harder for the guy who is getting kicked.

I suspect also that Rangers quite deliberate ploy of trying to get players booked by diving/ cheating (see S NAismith, Jellylegs, Whiitaker – Jeezo, the whole damned lot of them including the Keeper – McGregors ‘dive at Hibs for example) makes opposition coaches wary about sending players out to be ‘aggressive’ against the Orcs.

I was looking for big dan or someone to ‘sort someone out’ but with hindsight I am glad the team won by playing fair. That is the Celtic way. Wanyama and Kayal were both tremendous today. They tackled hard but they were clean. Others who talk about dignity would do well to look at those who practice it.

we just need to be better at committing fouls without getting caught: we need to encourage,

    – collisions in the opposition penalty box, our 2 centre halves basically forget the ball and batter in to their worst culprit at the back

    – when jamsey gets kicked then the oppostion’s smallest forward gets it and then warned the next one will be worst.

    – serial mis-timing of headers onto their biggest forward, a few sore ones to the back of the head

…. our ghuys have all week to work out what to do …..while we are doing a proper job

…. our tactics seem to be, accept getting fouled….. roll about for a bit (that is probably OK, as it should assist in getting the opposition booked) , ask the ref to book the opposition.

I want our team to dish out some stick and stop accepting the crap on the field….. we should also start surrounding opposition players and refs in a staged managed expression of our concern ……when we are foulded against ….

In short tougher and more professional ….. forget the refs , when we are 3 or 4 at CP, lets remember who tresspased against us in previous games and get stuck in ……

  14. Lostinbonnybridge – my Missus is fed up with me telling her that I would do Burley/ Booth/ Walker – the whole damned caboodles job better than they do. They don’t even know the basics. They were pro footballers but seem to have forgotten everything they ever knew as soon as they stopped playing.

And I would also do it for 75% of what they are on.

    Where do we apply?

  15. Historical note on wee teams getting in about big teams …

    The CY derby circa 91’ish.

MH in his pomp, leading the line and scoring goals.

The entire StM backline took turns to put him up in the air.

Ref knew something was up but couldn,t catch them.

Of course it helped that half the StM defence was ex Celts.

However that was a one off, from memory it might have been a cup game.

M/well have previous on bursting a gut against us and start gazing against the TFOD.

The comments from M/well before the game were just there to set out the context.

Make sure the MIB knew what was happening and to make sure he would react accordingly.

Doing nothing will just get more players injured.

We should have but the boot in at the first sign of agendas, cheapshots or players playing “Buddy Ball”.

If that is beyond us then the least we should do is mob the first guy to go in heavy.

Six guys around him shouting abuse will get the foul noted.

The ref is then on the spot, he has to react.

We have to fight for everything with everything at our disposal.

If players don’t have the heart then they surely have a good set of lungs.

Make a fuss, show up the TFOD fellow travellers / MIB apologists for what they are.

    Cheats, cowards, wallopers …

  16. Watched my boy’s U-16 team this morning play against a bigger, stronger and dirty team and we won 4-1. Stomach in turmoil as he got carried off.

Sky+ our game (No way to watch a Celtic game and wont be doing that again) and couldn’t believe the refereeing decicions. Hideous. Celtic must complain.

  17. RT

dignity …is their own fabrication…………..their own thought……their own perception

nowhere except in this footballing backwater are they considered anything else other than the scum they are

I think, I think it was wee Jackie Mc who was done by Eagles.

I thought that was the Giggs testimonial at OT? Pretty sure, although I had blagged a spot in a box just above the corner where the teams come out so was a long way away from the incident. I remember in the second half when Sutty was walking back to the tunnel on his own, as all the Manc prawn sandwich munchers were giving him verbals all along the touchline, Sutty was blowing them kisses and really winding them up.

By the way I think its worth pointing out – because I have criticised Lennons tactics and substitutions in the past (which were and are still genuine concerns) its only right to give him credit when its due.

He has got it spot on in the last 2 games.

Thats not to say Im overly happy at seeing us more or less neck and neck with any Motherwell team – but thats a separate argument.

    Dropping Hooper has worked.

Samaras has had 2 good/decent games.

Stokes has given his best 2 performances in a Celtic jersey.

    Kayal is back

Substitutions have won us 2 games (I know Hoopers goal didnt win it, but it sealed it at a tipping point time)

Commons today in the hole didnt work – but what it did do, with Samaras being the diagonal ball – was freshen things up and take away that element of predictability Celtic have become complicit in (with a subutteo 442 formation)

(Wasnt happy to hear we hadnt registered Rogne mind you)

And Im not sure whether by hook or by crook – but a central midfield without Ki has given us a more solid core and a pairing of Wanyama and Kayal looks like it has enough potential that we wont see teams running through the middle of the park uninterupted again, so again a positive move.

    So well done Neil.

    More of the same please.

McCall was a thoroughly decent man at Bradford. He was a leader, he started youth initiatives to try to bring in more Asian players from the Bradford City catchment area, he did huge amounts of work to make Bradford City a club relevant to the modern Bradford.

He is still regarded here almost in the same way as we think of Tommy.

But then he went to Scotland.
