Narrative is clear: Celtic improvement is profound

1001

When you and I write, whether you are aware of it or not, there’s always a narrative.  Behind the words the subtext explains why we think a game was won or lost, why events on the park reinforce our world view, or, for some, just that they are angry people.

For most, our narrative is bound by the constraints of realistic parameters, although some are so afflicted by a heavily prejudiced world view that no amount of evidence to the contrary would convince them, for example, that they are being led by the nose by charlatans.

As the game drew to a conclusion last night, this troubled me.  I was proud of the way Celtic played.  They attacked a team from one of the top leagues in a way we’ve not seen since Juventus visited in 2001.  It was glorious and gutsy, skilful and dramatic.  But with 92 minutes on the clock, it was heading towards defeat.  No matter the circumstances, defeat binds any narrative as a failure, glorious or otherwise.  It didn’t feel like failure, but this was how we would remember this game.

John Guidetti’s 93rd minute equaliser changed the result and created some memories, but the underlying narrative would stand, with or without that goal: the improvement in Celtic since our August debacle is as profound as anything we have witnessed in 49 years.

Delighted to announce that our treble winning captain, Tom Boyd, will be attending CQN11 St Patrick’s Dinner at the Kerrydale Suite on Friday 13 March.  We also have big Packy, wee Joe and conventionally-sized Tommy Coyne.  And Archie Macpherson’s going to talk about the transformation which got underway 50 years ago that week!

Fill your boots at what will be a great celebration of our club and heritage, with a wee song or two from Patricia Ferns, and you’ll also help to build a school kitchen in Malawi for kids who often go without a proper meal.  For tickets and details, email me, celticquicknews@gmail.com

Congratulations to the SPFL, Hamilton Accies, Georgios Samaras, Celtic and Scottish football fans for last month’s Goal of the Month award, which was won by Jay Beatty for his strike at New Douglas Park.  Up with this sort of thing.

  1. Ronnie D is an honest to goodness football guy. No great pedigree as a player, no billy big boots attitude. He knows he messed up early season. But he stuck at it.

Jeezo -we all know the demands of the Celtic support – could you or me live with them? And he came in cold. Really impressed with him as an individual and he has connected with the support.

Just basking in these good good times as a Celt!

    I repeat…..

I genuinely wonder if any Celtic supporter who criticises the Celtic Trust really has an understanding of what they do.

Well bhoys and ghirls what a night at Celtic park last night.

A total roller coaster of emotions.

Started off with the fabulous John Inness giving us a rendition of nessun dorma. ( wonder if inter will return the favour next week and get some Italian lady to give us a wee Subo number ).

Then wee Bertie got us all going with his speech to the faithful, great stuff Bertie.

Then out come the Lions and the fans give us YNWA. I was lucky enough to share a scarf with wee shades at this point and I can tell you folks standing with your son belting out YNWA in that atmosphere takes a lot of beating.

The game itself was mental you all know what happened but for me the performance of Scott Brown was immense, lots of others gave their all but the skip for me was tops.

The fact that other people in the media and elsewhere dont really get what Celtic park is like on nights like last night doesn’t bother me in the slightest. However Chris Sutton you are dead to me now, if you are on the TV I want 24 HRS notice so I can reset my tivo box and never have to listen to you again. Your just a Frodo .

Do you credit Captain Brown for any of that new found attitude?

ALso, what did you think of his performance last night?

Excellent point. When Celtic play this exciting, thrilling football, you are so swept along in the buzz of it all that it becomes all consuming and freezes Sevco out of the picture. They become totally irrelevant.

I’ve been so caught up in all things Celtic today, that I’ve not given their ongoing saga a second thought. The future without them seems so exciting.

  9. I’ve just watched the game again. Quite a difference from being at the ground. An overriding impression from the TV may be wrong but I feel we were the fitter team last night. For years and more years, I have marvelled at how athletic foreign teams seem to have been compared to ourselves. Not last night.

At Celtic Park, I thought GMS was running about like a lost soul. Didn’t seem like that watching just now. Izzie’s distribution was still dire.

Still on cloud 9 (I’ve even got the undead on in the background: something I never would do usually- hoping they add to the feel good factor and there’s dancing in the streets of Raith tonight). Our manager has us going in the right direction.

  10. Those who are taking cheap swipes at our CEO ought to get a grip. Our players have been playing like this all season. It is coming to fruition now, much to the surprise of a lot of folk on here. Our CEO is responsible for bringing in the mhan who is making it possible.

  11. Just like to say that last night and the reaction to it from the support is what makes being US so worth while..As a Ronny convert i now love what hes trying to do, its like, ” who are you?.well get ready coz here we come”…no fear..its just a great feeling right now…and then you have wee Jay…that whole thing is a story written in heaven….as a side we are getting better game by game as a support we are passionate..The whole Thing we have is growing…Glasgow is Green and White and we will NEVER give it back….great times…wish my uncles were here to see it….bless…

Next season Sevco will drag us EVEN further down to their level. We will be made to pay be rest assured. Any employee with any ambition will leave. If you think I am talking shite then you must be relatively new to Scottish football.

A fair response. For all you `madness` of expression, your football views are usually pretty reasoned and for that reason, I believe you will convert to being a fan of our Captain. I agree it was very much a team effort last night. I believe , though, that Broony was the man who generated that togetherness…..and Ronny, of course.

Historically they have always been allowed to diddle their way along. Hence their incongruent domestic and European histories.

Our present following are probaby “surprised” by that fact. In a few months tbey will be arguing against that contention.
