Narrative is clear: Celtic improvement is profound

1001

When you and I write, whether you are aware of it or not, there’s always a narrative.  Behind the words the subtext explains why we think a game was won or lost, why events on the park reinforce our world view, or, for some, just that they are angry people.

For most, our narrative is bound by the constraints of realistic parameters, although some are so afflicted by a heavily prejudiced world view that no amount of evidence to the contrary would convince them, for example, that they are being led by the nose by charlatans.

As the game drew to a conclusion last night, this troubled me.  I was proud of the way Celtic played.  They attacked a team from one of the top leagues in a way we’ve not seen since Juventus visited in 2001.  It was glorious and gutsy, skilful and dramatic.  But with 92 minutes on the clock, it was heading towards defeat.  No matter the circumstances, defeat binds any narrative as a failure, glorious or otherwise.  It didn’t feel like failure, but this was how we would remember this game.

John Guidetti’s 93rd minute equaliser changed the result and created some memories, but the underlying narrative would stand, with or without that goal: the improvement in Celtic since our August debacle is as profound as anything we have witnessed in 49 years.

Delighted to announce that our treble winning captain, Tom Boyd, will be attending CQN11 St Patrick’s Dinner at the Kerrydale Suite on Friday 13 March.  We also have big Packy, wee Joe and conventionally-sized Tommy Coyne.  And Archie Macpherson’s going to talk about the transformation which got underway 50 years ago that week!

Fill your boots at what will be a great celebration of our club and heritage, with a wee song or two from Patricia Ferns, and you’ll also help to build a school kitchen in Malawi for kids who often go without a proper meal.  For tickets and details, email me, celticquicknews@gmail.com

Congratulations to the SPFL, Hamilton Accies, Georgios Samaras, Celtic and Scottish football fans for last month’s Goal of the Month award, which was won by Jay Beatty for his strike at New Douglas Park.  Up with this sort of thing.

We should keep things in perspective. I know that is difficult for people who believe in fairies and the plc`s infallibility. Mainly due to keeping an eye on their own shareholding mind you, and that the blogs babysitters prefer fairy stories for our resident children but some of us are adults. All of what I have written is very topical just now. All been in the hews headlines. So why not ? Je Suis Charlie but not when it concerns our parasitic board ???

Have you read todays report about sectarianism in Scotland being more linked to football than matches.

Nothing stopping any CQNer taking his coloured photograph of Peter Lawwell into the bog when I am on CQN or ignoring me. Trolls find that difficult though

We don’t care about the San Siro after experiencing Celtic Park last night.

Celtic cannot approach the Euro night phenomena for the bread and butter SPL day, especially when we find ourselves in the Europa and forced for invisible TV revenue reasons to play at mid day on a Sunday.

60,000 Celtic fans isn’t just a song, and one Barcelona night plants a seed in the Celtic DNA that leads to the next. You can never imagine where Celtic and Celtic feeling will take you, and last night was such a night, where pent up Celticness was realeased under a giant umbrella of attacking football that makes our club unique.

The singing and dancing Celtic fans will dissolve in time for the switch from Milan to Hamilton, but the heart and pulse of our the club will never be broken, and it beats louder than any worldwide.

Attending Thursday night matches is impossible for me so I gave little thought to booking flights for last night’s fixture. I booked my usual break to Spain only to realize that the home leg was during my mid-term break. “Oh well”, I thought, “I’ll watch it in Tom’s Irish Bar”. This is a small bar near Fuengirola but it has six tv screens and ex-pats and holiday makers frequent it to watch a variety of sports. Whenever I’m over I watch Celtic matches in it. I always meet another ghuy there who makes the pub his base for Celtic matches. Usually, there might be one or two other Tims in it but the pub can be full of other supporters, mainly of EPL teams. Most supporters do not express themselves too emotionally, except when their team scores a goal. I don’t know about you but watching the Hoops among your own is very special, and if it is not to be at Celtic Park, a pub full of Tims makes the occasion memorable, especially for big matches.

I checked out a new bar last night, The Celt, which was recently highlighted here. When I arrived at 7.30pm I was the only customer and feared that the pub’s location and the low holiday season would mean very few fans and poor atmosphere for such an important game. More arrived and by kick off there was twelve of us in there. All tims, all passionate about Celtic and all knowledgeable about the current team. Even if Bhoylo88 was there the average age wouldn’t have slipped below 60!

From the tv broadcast it was obvious the atmosphere in the stadium was electric and the good early start to the game bhouyed us up no end. Alas, by the fifteenth minute we were just hoping not to suffer an embarrassing defeat. Like the fans in paradise, we willed the team not to give up and when our first goal arrived we let a collective roar that younger more energetic fans couldn’t match. At the second goal we jumped out of our chairs and danced with unrestrained joy. We were all hoarse now but we willed the team on through every kick, header and tackle.

The two ghirls in attendance matched the old bhoys for enthusiasm and encouragement. Like the team we never gave up and believed that we could get something out of the game. Imagine the cheers, dancing and celebrating after Guidetti’s equaliser! That’s what makes Celtic special – the cameraderie, the unique bond that unites people all over the world, the joy a great performance like last night’s brings.

Well done to Jay for winning Goal of the Month.

  15. I’ve always wondered in past years why we changed our game in Europe especially in away games.

We played systems that were alien to us and usually had a predictable result.

RD has a plan, a way of playing that doesn’t change and that’s why we are progressing.

The players are comfortable in playing this way and getting better each game.

Last night, more than the result , was a victory for attacking , stylish football, slick passing and good close control.

I predict years of enjoyment for us Bhoys.

Not a very superstitiousguy but today I put all the cloths I was wearing last night in the bottom drawer, lucky shamrock boxer shorts aswell btw. Never even washed them and I’ll be wearing them next week for the return game.

What a great night, still on a high because of last night’s perfprmance. Celtic exsist for those night’s. The emotions went from deep dispair to total joy, the 1st half seemed to last about 5mins. Injury time and that goal can’t really be explained in words, I had my jeans down at my knees showing off my lucky shamrock boxers. The guys behind me must have thought I was mad.

When I got home the house was in darkness as Isobel was in bed. Opened a bottle of red wine and sat for about an hour reliving the night in my mind. I still have a wee smile on my face just now.

Everytime I witness a night such as last night I always think it can’t be beaten then we go and do it again.

Maybe not the greatest result in our glorious history but you know what? That was up there with Barca for atmosphere and sheer drama.

Someone wrote yesterday that we should judge Ronny after 18 months, if last night was anything to go on then bhoy are we in for a great ride.

Mr Lawell take note, playing football the way we did last night will put more bums on seats than any reincarnated version of the huns ever will.

What a time it is for us Tims.

PS Delaneys, did you see my post re ticket for yourself on Sunday?

  20. Football pundits are awful generally. They are paid to be controversial to some degree but they often don’t seem to get basic things like why fans are reacting or responding in a certain way, what just happened to an injured player and so on and so on…

Add to that the pain of being a Sevconian or being in the pay of the Sevco media (I believe Sutton is just a big whining sod with no particular axe to grind but a need for the cash he gets for winding people up) – and it just becomes white noise. Laughing at them as they struggle with the truth is my favoured approach.

Imagine – they are crapping it that their favourite team of the moment might lose against whatever team they are playing tonight (I forget) in the Championship! If Dodgy Dave ‘wins’ the day they’ve no idea where the money is coming from to keep the lights on and the asbestos in, never mind revamp an awful and expensive squad of alleged footballers. If Mike seizes yet more of the day they are faced with mediocrity in perpetuity while he creams off whatever profits there are and if he loses maybe he’ll just call in his dough and bring it all crashing down. Hobsons choice!

Meanwhile – We’re hoping we can do something special against Inter to add to the three goals we got against them last night – top of the league, cup final to come, Scottish cup quarter as well…..

But we show no obvious signs of being fitter than last season? Oh dear.
