Narrative is clear: Celtic improvement is profound

1001

When you and I write, whether you are aware of it or not, there’s always a narrative.  Behind the words the subtext explains why we think a game was won or lost, why events on the park reinforce our world view, or, for some, just that they are angry people.

For most, our narrative is bound by the constraints of realistic parameters, although some are so afflicted by a heavily prejudiced world view that no amount of evidence to the contrary would convince them, for example, that they are being led by the nose by charlatans.

As the game drew to a conclusion last night, this troubled me.  I was proud of the way Celtic played.  They attacked a team from one of the top leagues in a way we’ve not seen since Juventus visited in 2001.  It was glorious and gutsy, skilful and dramatic.  But with 92 minutes on the clock, it was heading towards defeat.  No matter the circumstances, defeat binds any narrative as a failure, glorious or otherwise.  It didn’t feel like failure, but this was how we would remember this game.

John Guidetti’s 93rd minute equaliser changed the result and created some memories, but the underlying narrative would stand, with or without that goal: the improvement in Celtic since our August debacle is as profound as anything we have witnessed in 49 years.

Delighted to announce that our treble winning captain, Tom Boyd, will be attending CQN11 St Patrick’s Dinner at the Kerrydale Suite on Friday 13 March.  We also have big Packy, wee Joe and conventionally-sized Tommy Coyne.  And Archie Macpherson’s going to talk about the transformation which got underway 50 years ago that week!

Fill your boots at what will be a great celebration of our club and heritage, with a wee song or two from Patricia Ferns, and you’ll also help to build a school kitchen in Malawi for kids who often go without a proper meal.  For tickets and details, email me, celticquicknews@gmail.com

Congratulations to the SPFL, Hamilton Accies, Georgios Samaras, Celtic and Scottish football fans for last month’s Goal of the Month award, which was won by Jay Beatty for his strike at New Douglas Park.  Up with this sort of thing.

Jackson will soon be in Melbourne to speak at a conference called “money in sport” his topic of choice is Rangers and he’s titled it “the financial wrecking of Rangers” the conference will be held at the Etihad stadium.

From what I gather his whole piece will be about how Rangers fell victim to crooks and swindlers and how it could happen to any football club.

There will be no mention of the tax avoidance, unpaid tax or spending money they didn’t have, he has already contacted the zombie supporters clubs here and they are promoting tickets within their membership.

    Quote:

Money In Sport’s inaugural sports conference, held at Melbourne’s Etihad Stadium on Tuesday 17th March and Wednesday 18th March, 2015, will venture into the heart of the business plans of some of the most active brands in sport and examine the business of sport through the insights of over 35 guest speakers and panelists, including:

•Tom Payne, the man responsible for luring David Beckham from the world’s biggest football club, Real Madrid, to the lesser known MLS franchise, LA Galaxy,

•FFA CEO David Gallop who has steered Australia to 2015 Asian Cup Champions,

•Todd Greenberg Head of Football NRL,

•Leading sports journalist from Glasgow Keith Jackson and many more”

  5. Marty is the man on

On Thursday night, I took my 8yr old daughter to her first ever football game, knowing the atmosphere might hit home and have an impact. And it certainly did.

Despite the wet and cold, and not knowing too much about football, she sang her heart out. With 10 mins left, I told her it was nearly finished and she was gutted. Good, I thought, she isn’t bored, and will want to come back. Then Guidetti scored, and bedlam ensued.

Surely a memory cemented for life, and a new Celtic fan to boot.

She loved the GB too (as did I). Their display and their singing.

    Good times.

  6. RWE,

Sorry to hear about your loss, condolences on the passing from this World of your son Tony, may he rest in peace and may you find yours.

Brilliant, mate. Always a delight to make a convert.

I took my kid sis to her first game when she was ten or eleven. Against Thistle,I think, and 5-0.

Stood her behind an exit in The Jungle so she could get a clear view. She got Celtic right away. Still has her season ticket xx years later, and was ‘buzzing oot ma nut’ after Thursday’s match!

Flick back a page or two, find the ‘Moravjic’ clip someone posted, and sit her down in front of it. Just to be sure…

  15. Morning all.

Was half listening to Radio 5 Live earlier. They were interviewing Donal McIntyre, their journalist who investigated the Chelsea Headhunters (a racist mob) some time ago. It was, of course, because of the trouble in Paris. The English are waking up to the problem of racism in football. McIntyre mentioned the undead v us as games where sectarianism still raises its head. While he didn’t say one was as bad as the other, he was making the point that the powers that be are not facing up to the problem. (I would have been a lot happier if he had condemned our then Justice Minister for actually praising the shameful songbook; but he is probably unaware of that.)

It’s not only the powers that be in Government, look at BT’s treatment of Collymore for speaking out against it.

  16. PCs- After 10 mins of last night I switched over from BT as the stuff coming from the away end was beyond the pale.

Wife couldn’t believe her luck when she got to watch Eastenders Live live.

(The storyline on that is more believable than the Establishment’s silence on Sevco)

  17. Throughout the world our club is praised. Our successes, our history and our support are celebrated.

Why is it then that so many of our ex players happily kick us at every opportunity?!

The decision by the football authorities in Scotland to ignore the sectarianism and racism from the Mount Florida end at Hampden has provided the monkeys with a blank canvas for bigotry.

    This will get worse.

  20. Just popped in to say ………thanks to Roy croppy for the music last night all sorts all class ……..especially highland paddy which took me back to the bayview in Dungloe many moons ago ……..and brought a wee tear to my eye …….great times !!!

  21. Returned to gym yesterday, so still sore today, got to watch the dodgy back.

    Two quick comments…

1- watch how the media will spin the Orcs chanting as sectarian, no racism will be mentioned.

2- noticed that the RST were “shocked” at the TONE of the Sevco boards comments about the 3 Bears “amost shitting themselves” when asked to find the cash. No reference to the substance, just the TONE.

    Bury them now…..

  25. HT,

Imo, our Government’s calling of the infamous summit after the shame game has made matters a great deal worse, because the legislation was already in place. They simply refused to enforce it, as it only really affected those who support the dead team from Govan.

In answer to question about our ex-players and their treatment of our team: money talks. They know that if they tell the truth, they’ll not be getting further invites. I have no respect for the likes of Bonnar but I feel really sorry for Nevin, after what WC wrote the other day.

SoT posted that Italian commentary felt it was almost a sin to talk over the Walk On on Thursday night. Meanwhile we have Sutton claiming that we should be beating teams like Inter by several goals.

  27. Hamiltontim when it comes to the political stuff there are no absolutes. A while back I spoke to a Zimbabwean White land owner. He had a story to tell. Not the same one we hear. It is not alway black and white when it comes to who is right and wrong in any conflict where people die or are enslaved even if that happens after their emancipation. Hail hail

  28. HT I know mate , I don’t care that the rags in my own country can hate their own so much it matters not. I played heaps of the links at full blast and my two daughters at home had a buzz on the Celtic support and the GB. Another day at paradise. Ignore the haters .
