Narrative is clear: Celtic improvement is profound

1001

When you and I write, whether you are aware of it or not, there’s always a narrative.  Behind the words the subtext explains why we think a game was won or lost, why events on the park reinforce our world view, or, for some, just that they are angry people.

For most, our narrative is bound by the constraints of realistic parameters, although some are so afflicted by a heavily prejudiced world view that no amount of evidence to the contrary would convince them, for example, that they are being led by the nose by charlatans.

As the game drew to a conclusion last night, this troubled me.  I was proud of the way Celtic played.  They attacked a team from one of the top leagues in a way we’ve not seen since Juventus visited in 2001.  It was glorious and gutsy, skilful and dramatic.  But with 92 minutes on the clock, it was heading towards defeat.  No matter the circumstances, defeat binds any narrative as a failure, glorious or otherwise.  It didn’t feel like failure, but this was how we would remember this game.

John Guidetti’s 93rd minute equaliser changed the result and created some memories, but the underlying narrative would stand, with or without that goal: the improvement in Celtic since our August debacle is as profound as anything we have witnessed in 49 years.

Delighted to announce that our treble winning captain, Tom Boyd, will be attending CQN11 St Patrick’s Dinner at the Kerrydale Suite on Friday 13 March.  We also have big Packy, wee Joe and conventionally-sized Tommy Coyne.  And Archie Macpherson’s going to talk about the transformation which got underway 50 years ago that week!

Fill your boots at what will be a great celebration of our club and heritage, with a wee song or two from Patricia Ferns, and you’ll also help to build a school kitchen in Malawi for kids who often go without a proper meal.  For tickets and details, email me, celticquicknews@gmail.com

Congratulations to the SPFL, Hamilton Accies, Georgios Samaras, Celtic and Scottish football fans for last month’s Goal of the Month award, which was won by Jay Beatty for his strike at New Douglas Park.  Up with this sort of thing.

my first Celtic game was on a school visit to a league game versus Kilmarnock (circa 1994). 2-0 down with 5 mins to half time. We scored 2 quick goals before the break and went on to win 4-2.

I was already a Tim thanks to Joe Miller’s winner in the 1989 Scottish Cup final. I was at Cub camp and had to pick a side. I picked Celtic and we won. So that was that.

    What was your first game?

Sectarianism is back in the news in Scotland courtesy of Sevco. The indecent haste by the establishment media to standardize it as prevalent on both sides keeps the new club

    squarely with full Zombie status.

The Sevco bears are bubbling under with a sense of grievance, things are looking more grim by the day, and the decision taken for all Scotland at least publicly to be unable to hear banned songs now common place, will much more quickly kill Sevco, than it helped kill Rangers.

If they had ditched the history they would have had a chance as a new club, someone somewhere might have believed them that they wanted to start a fresh.

The introduction of Sevco sectarianism with new vim and vigour from an old songbook, means they are untouchable and toxic, and the delicious irony is that’s they want to be, no one likes them they don’t care.

They commit the crimes, self inflicted bear on bear, the ultimate victimless crime.

I’d typed a longer reply but my blinkin’ screen froze so it’s gone.

In short, I attended one of the first FAC meetings. It was the one where around 30 Rangers casuals had turned up and were already sitting inside when I arrived.

Their claim was that the summit, and our attendance at it, was an indication that the impending OBAF Bill (as it was) was a law aimed at both sets of supporters.

It was incredibly short sighted and naive of us to recognise it by taking part.

Having brought my wee lads to the game from Ireland on Thur have stayed on for Hamilton game.

They want to get there early to see players get off bus. Anyone know how long before a game they tend to arrive?

Also, I have 2 tics but need 2 more. What’s the best bet? Ticket office or just pick 2 up outside ground?

Whether crayon, pen or laptop……………the Celtic malcontent is given a scoddish platform.

That platform is denied to the likes of Tom Boyd because they happen to talk about facts and

    inconvenient truths.

The Rotten Mob are forever Boys Brigaders who march to the beat of a weel-kent drum, where breaking ranks is frowned on.

    FACT!

  10. pailreverecsc you should have no problem getting tickets for Sunday. Ticket office or Celtic shops if you want to sit in a particular area. Get to the ground by 11:30 should be ample time to see the team, then a quick visit to the kerrydale. Hope your bhoys are not expecting a repeat of Thursday! I’m sure they will enjoy it nevertheless. Hail Hail hebcelt

Sorry, was trying to organize it but got caught up at work and ended up having to go straight to CP as usual.

  13. Stanley Victor has a high profile down south.

His campaign to highlight their sectarianism will get a lot of light.

Hopefully , he will embarrass those in charge here to take action.

The type of stuff they sing is illegal .

My Da would for ever refer to this to anyone who would listen and even to the who wouldn’t

“In April 1963, the South African Minister of Justice, strident apartheid enforcer and supporter of Nazi Germany B. J. Vorster commented that he would be “willing to exchange all the [South African justice] legislation… for one clause of the Northern Ireland Special Powers Act.” “

  18. HT I am very sure that those words were spoken. We are pretty good at screwing it up. Bankers get record bonuses, the rich get richer the poor get the picture and yet we still comply with the voting monopoly to keep the status quo. Better get back to Celtic stuff, well proud of my team, crystal palace mate came across the Jay got and just emaile me saying quality. Glasgow is green and white.

    HT,

Imo, our Government’s calling of the infamous summit after the shame game has made matters a great deal worse, because the legislation was already in place. They simply refused to enforce it, as it only really affected those who support the dead team from Govan.

    Summit Sequel

Raith and Sevco officials called to St Andrews House to explain involvement in Friday Horror Show.

Both hope for leniency given it’s their first experience of such a summit.

English press report concern that the streets of raith may have been full of blood.

Daily Record highlights Raith chairman’s ‘provocative statements’ and the time of previous ‘liquidation and demotion of the greatest football team in the world’

Speirs and English agree he brings it on himself.

Raith are docked 6 points at behest of new SFA chairman J Edgar House (till recently a policeman given to losing bad files) and new SPFL chair Kenny McCaskill.

These points are given to Sevco cos a 9 year old Sevco fan from saw a Raith rovers sticker in a toilet and was traumatised.

Ann Budge says……..nothing. Seriously conflicted. Loves pristines toilets. Empathises with fellow stickies.

The Herald runs a front page article citing how in a survey (of the 12 guys in the news team) 90% questioned blamed Kafflik skools and Green Brigade as principal causes of the troubles in falkirk.

They highlight the actions of 60,000 racist bigots on thus night who sang YNWA so loud it threatened to damage the hearing of some italian nationals and undoubtedly seared a memory of paradise on their soul’s forever.

  23. The feel good factor is definitely back at Celtic and I’m basking in it. I know its inevitable from time to time that the antics from the dark side crop up and are discussed and laughed at on the blog. However inmo it is overdone on here, Keep it Celtic is my motto.

Armstrong & GMS have made sensational starts to their Celtic careers and whilst I hope they kick on from here, we all know how fickle this game is. A couple of poor games or bad results and the real football experts will be back, telling us how the Club bought cheap and sold us down the river again. To-morrow is now a very big game, hangover or party time?,

same team or freshen it up?. Can’t wait.

  26. So, PL / JP / the ‘bored’ have – finally / hopefully – realised that ye dont need to recruit players who have a foreign-agent…although…a fair few foreigners have turned out to be diamonds rather than pebbles…but…kissing 20+ frogs afore ye get a – Ki / Vic67 / Nir – is oh so fecking frustrating…SA & GMS are what ye call players who ooze Celticness…imho.

The continued pursuit of foreign-agenty-players was causing me to suspect that there was Arthur Daley-type stuff going on…if I’m wrong?….sue me!

The other night was Celticness personified from A-Z…imho.

The 2nd leg is another game were…anything can and, probably will happen.

For me…looking at the reallity-big-picture…I fear Jackie MacNamara and…Ryan Gow.
