Narrative is clear: Celtic improvement is profound

1001

When you and I write, whether you are aware of it or not, there’s always a narrative.  Behind the words the subtext explains why we think a game was won or lost, why events on the park reinforce our world view, or, for some, just that they are angry people.

For most, our narrative is bound by the constraints of realistic parameters, although some are so afflicted by a heavily prejudiced world view that no amount of evidence to the contrary would convince them, for example, that they are being led by the nose by charlatans.

As the game drew to a conclusion last night, this troubled me.  I was proud of the way Celtic played.  They attacked a team from one of the top leagues in a way we’ve not seen since Juventus visited in 2001.  It was glorious and gutsy, skilful and dramatic.  But with 92 minutes on the clock, it was heading towards defeat.  No matter the circumstances, defeat binds any narrative as a failure, glorious or otherwise.  It didn’t feel like failure, but this was how we would remember this game.

John Guidetti’s 93rd minute equaliser changed the result and created some memories, but the underlying narrative would stand, with or without that goal: the improvement in Celtic since our August debacle is as profound as anything we have witnessed in 49 years.

Delighted to announce that our treble winning captain, Tom Boyd, will be attending CQN11 St Patrick’s Dinner at the Kerrydale Suite on Friday 13 March.  We also have big Packy, wee Joe and conventionally-sized Tommy Coyne.  And Archie Macpherson’s going to talk about the transformation which got underway 50 years ago that week!

Fill your boots at what will be a great celebration of our club and heritage, with a wee song or two from Patricia Ferns, and you’ll also help to build a school kitchen in Malawi for kids who often go without a proper meal.  For tickets and details, email me, celticquicknews@gmail.com

Congratulations to the SPFL, Hamilton Accies, Georgios Samaras, Celtic and Scottish football fans for last month’s Goal of the Month award, which was won by Jay Beatty for his strike at New Douglas Park.  Up with this sort of thing.

  1. Campagnaro hails Celtic Park

Hugo Campagnaro spoke to Inter Channel after the Nerazzurri took part in a six-goal thriller at Celtic Park. “”It’s a shame we conceced that goal at the death but it’s not a bad scoreline for us to take home,” the 34-year-old mused. “It could have gone a lot better for us but we ended up with three big away goals to take home. In any case we played better today so I’m happy. “Their second goal? The ball took a deflection, that sort of thing can happen sometimes in the area, especially when the game’s being played so fast. We have to be careful.” The veteran defender also had this to say on Celtic Park itself: “It’s an amazing ground, the fans really get behind the team. Now we’ll have the same backing on our side at San Siro, and we have to put everything into it.” (www.inter.it)

  2. Brilliant atmosphere at the game and superb display from the GB yesterday. That’s been a new revelation for fans who have not experienced it, and for players too.

I said last night, that I would prefer playing this brand of football, as opposed to the ultra defensive displays previously on show in Europe. There was merit and effective results previously and I’ve no wish to criticise them, but for me seeing our team at home attacking in waves at pace was so refreshing.

While I did say that we were maybe naive, and although that remains true to an extent, individual errors rather than tactics cost us two goals.

This journey will be a thrill a minute, and we will improve.

  3. Dundee United set to sell out League Cup Final briefs

Dundee United’s League Cup Final ticket allocation will be close to being sold out by the time it’s due to go on general sale.

By first thing on Thursday, sales were hovering around the 15,000 mark, meaning the full 18,000 briefs earmarked for them will be handed over by the SPFL.

And with sales still brisk, they could be virtually all gone by the time the general sale is due to start at 9am today (Evening Telegraph)

    …… ……………

The fellow Tim was a mature fella like myself :-)) he had offered to see the two young lads safely into town but they were intent on a night out in an Irish pub in The Merchant City. The gent on the train had behaved in a very hospitable Celtic-like manner but I think he was intent on going home for a hot cocoa and then bed – again a bit like myself:-))

  7. cont’d…..was our staple diet.

Last season was for me a ‘running on the spot’ season, Although we reached the CL groups, we were soundly beaten, and at home, only the title was won.

Neil’s heart was nor really ‘in it’ at the end, he was job-hunting and after the departure of Mjallby, he was basically going through the motions, as were the team.

Ronny has ‘picked up the reins’ and is stamping his vision and style on the club.

Above all else, last night showed that we are ‘on the right track’.

The optimism gushing out of everyone coming out of the stadium, was not that of a 3-3 draw, although it did feel like a win, rather it was borne out a belief in what we saw, that the best is yet to come.

Ronny was right to say outright he wants the treble – if you don’t identify your target you have no chance of hitting it – Forza Ronny – Forza Celtic

  8. I enjoyed this.

Perhaps most of all the picture of our management team’s celebration.

  9. Haven’t read back the last 24 hours or so but I want to congratulate everyone who represented our magnificent club last night (players, coaching staff, Lisbon lions and supporters)! It may have been a Europa league tie by title but the occasion, atmosphere and dare I say it quality of attacking football (maybe not quality of defensive football haha) had Champions League written all over it!

I thought to a man everyone in the side showed great bravery on the ball (especially at 0-2) when it would have been easy to let the heads drop and accept the defeat to a bigger, more expensively assembled team. Matthews epitomised our positivity in the first half and I was delighted at his composure for the first goal.

Second half, Nir Biton and Scott Brown were immense! If those two were EPL players their value would be £10 million each without question. Brown is now a true captain in every sense of the word, compare his performance to the home tie v Barcelona last year, controlled aggression and over 80% completion of passes.

Also, note how we kept trying to play the right way even deep into stoppage time. Absolutely no offence intended to Neil (and I think to be honest Ronny tried similar tactics when he newly arrived) but had we been down 2-3 at home 6 months or a year ago the long balls would have been punted up to makeshift striker Van Dijk and we would be feeding for scraps. Ronny has give this team belief that they can beat teams such as Inter playing the same way we do against Dundee Utd and Motherwell, that’s the biggest thing to come from last night. It was fabulous beating Barcelona the way we did back in 2012 but if we’re being realistic we know that’s not a sustainable path to try and follow and to be honest it’s not brilliant to watch as a long term strategy. We went toe to toe with a quality side last night and although I was nervous of what the consequences might have been for doing that, Ronny certainly wasn’t! Last night was the night that Ronny and his team needed. I also think that as a support, we needed it too! A lot of fans had plenty of hope before last night that Ronny and his side were capable of producing good football at this level but not many had real belief that we would. I think we all now believe in where this team is going.

Those 1st and 3rd goals were moves of the highest quality and better attacking play than anything I’ve seen of Man Utd this season for example (and how much did their attacking players cost?)

Make no mistake if that been a Van Gaal team that ball was getting blootered into the box long before the 93rd minute. Well done Ronny and the bhoys!

P.S I predict Craig Gordon will produce a stunning performance at the San Siro next week and we will win 2-1.

    That sounds a bit extreme!

Is ronny taking on the d Viking blood eagle treatment for those pulling their weight?

Seriously – to echo an earliest poster – having apparently played his way into Ronny’s world, has he now gone back to Buster Brown and played his way out?

    Dunno?

  17. Our big hearted, beautiful son and brother, Tony, passed away this morning at 8.05am in Lexington, Virginia.

To quote BMCUWP, he won many battles but could never win the war.

When he graduated from VMI in 2001 he put an entry into his yearbook which said it all.

“Though my accent is different, I am and always will be a Scotsman and a Celt..Hail! Hail!”

Our thanks to all on here, past and present, who gave such support to Tony; particularly, SFTB, bognorbhoy, weebobbycollins, sipsini, bournsouprecipe, captain beefheart, thebarcamole, BMCUWP,embramike, ACGR, An Tearnam, blantyretim, and of course Paul – and many others who will need to forgive my dodgy memory at this time.

Tenthirty, if you’re reading this, you are a lion amongst men, and Cora still talks about you. Iain J, just in case you are a lurker hereabouts, you elevated our visits to CP to a level that made them unforgettable for Tony.

We are satisfied that Tony hung on to make sure we got some kind of result last night, and then checked out at 8.05 this morning, just in case we were unsure.

Always wanted to have the last word.

HH Mr Happy – leave the light on.

  18. Saint Stivs….

Ha Ha… Yea, my idea of a placard seemed a good one at the time, but after the third proposition, I had to put it away.. How many times can you take, “Hey auld yin, want a good time??” I think it was only on the intervention of Jamesgang, that got me out a potentially embarrassing situation !!

    I’ll know better next time.

    Can’t agree big fella.

No excuses. Huge football game. Deila is right to discipline him.

There are rakes of flights to Edinburgh, Prestwick and Glasgow from Dublin daily and he has the cash.

It is disrespectful to his manager, team mates and the fans.

I would not play him for a number of weeks. Just on my own views but you have to send out a message to the squad and also the fans who put a lot of money and time into the club.

    Very disappointed with Stokesy.

Agree with the main thrust of your post regarding Peter Lawwell.

Those who ‘have it in for him and the board as basically ‘game theorists’ – they have all the clever answers on how to run the club theoretically, however Peter and the board have to run the club in a practical manner.

They are guardians of the club and must ensure that the club stays alive and in good shape to be handed over when heir time comes to go.

The club is very much alive and….where there is life there is HOPE.

We were given a huge dollop of HOPE last night – HH
