Neil Lennon era ends

1817

Neil Lennon ‘got’ Celtic.  He was a rookie appointment, and the early weeks were far from comfortable, a Hampden defeat to Ross County looked like an ominous early sign, but from the start of his first preseason he didn’t look back.

He was a hugely successful Celtic manager in Scotland and in Europe.  The Barcelona team of the last six years, possibly the greatest team in history, were at their peak when they visited Celtic Park in November 2012. Neil came up with the game plan which brought Celtic victory and raised our profile across Europe.

What he had to endure off-field during his time at Celtic was atrocious and a blight on our society.  But he overcame it.  He stuck it out when you or I may have left, and now he leaves on his own terms – an undisputed winner.

More at another time on who next, but if we get a man nearly as capable we will be doing well.

Take care, Neil.

Good luck to you Neil. An example to all of us in your courage and fortitude for all you had to put up with. Always Lennon in the SMSM unlike Ally, Coisty, Watty or Walter. They shamefully wound up the orcs prior to the Celtic visit then expressed horror when Neil was assaulted. The subsequent not guilty verdict was yet another shameful episode. Then there was the so-called old firm shame game when in truth all of the transgressions, including McCoists whisper, were all down to Rangers that night.

No. Not likely to either, at least not publicly, or officially.

  14. All the best for the future, Neil.

  18. Ernie Lynch – if NL stated in an interview something like “yes there were one or two issues with the board regarding players and budget but my primary reason for leaving was my need to return to a normal life” would you accept his words or think he was using a bit of PR speak?

Like everyone on here I am shocked at the news about Lenny. It goes without saying that I am grateful to him for his fourteen years of wholehearted effort on our behalf and I wish him a happy future away from the hassle that has followed him in his time with us. We will never forget his tremendous courage in the face of so much bitterness shown towards him by sections of Scottish society.

With the CL qualifiers looming ever closer, we must move on and I just hope that those who have the final say in these matters are listening to what the fans are saying. If we have any desire to move forward in Europe we must purchase the right sort of player for that task and also hold on to the stars we have. I will wait to see what PL does before making any other comment.

Those things come with the job for a player and a manager. At least for one who’s ambitious.

No more and no less than Neil Lennon, Davie Hay, Billy McNeill. You could even argue that Jock Stein only had Hibs and Dunfermline on his CV. Tommy Burns basically had Kilmarnock.

Of course the corollary is (are) Liam Brady, John Barnes, Lou Macari.
