Neil Lennon speaks out for the heart of Celtic

1024

I spoke to Phil Mac Giolla Bhain, a man who wears his Republican heritage on his sleeve, about the hostile reaction to his comments on modernising the Celtic songbook a few months back.  Phil found himself to be an easy target for conspiracy theorists who turned on him for issuing a request to an end of political chanting.  I’m sure Neil Lennon will not find anything like the same reaction to his comments in the Sun today, but it remains to be seen if anyone listens.

Neil said, “It’s important that we put a general message out that these chants have no place around our club. To be honest, we are better than that as a club and we always have been, we just don’t need it.

“We are and always have been a club open to all and we do not have issues around sectarianism. We have our own values and traditions but they do not include these chants. We don’t want them at matches and they must stop.”

This is not the first time Neil has given the same message this year.  After his earlier comments I actually heard, “Who is Neil Lennon to tell me what I can and can’t sing?  I’ve been going to Celtic Park a lot longer than he has.”

We are in a classic social paradox.  The reputational damage of political singing is not felt by those who sing, and the risk of personal consequences arising for any individual singer is probably around 1%.  And let’s be honest here, for all the supportive flags, banners and “I’m Neil Lennon” proclamations, is Neil respected enough to be listened to, or has he become a modern Che Guevara-poster boy?

Whatever you think of Neil, or his rights to say what you can or cannot sing, he has the best interests of our club in mind whenever he speaks on this subject.

  1. Jeezo,

We played Rennes two weeks ago tonight; the Sun reported last week that we were being reported to UEFA for illicit chants and a full week on we’re still allowing this topic to dominate CQN and by our commenting on it so much, allowing the media to maintain the hype and keep this as a “live”issue.

We need to move on. Neil must not talk about it to the press tomorrow – do a Sally and tell the BBC to F*** off if needed since, no matter what he says he will be misrepresented by them; all his focus should be on 3 points on Saturday. The board or PL should comment to the media but I would wait until we hear from UEFA.

We are a football club not a political organisation.

In the meantime let’s all focus on the footie and the points we must take on Saturday

Great to see you back posting again. How old (young) is the wee yin these days? 2 maybe?

And you’ll know your driver that night is now a doctor.

  3. Sectarianism IS NOT A FOOTBALL PROBLEM

If the Currants went out of existence tomorrow…Would anyone notice the difference in attitude in our normal everyday working lives…?

We’d still be hated for being Celtic fans.

Simply because of our clubs connection with dear Ould Ireland.

The 1 thing I am suspicious about is why not just name the songs that is banned.

  6. EDB. Apologies. You are correct. I have amended illicit post and sent an email to Paul apologising and asking for previous one to be deleted.

I cringed last season sitting beside the Green Brigade in upper 112 (Only option at the time) when they sang non Footbal pish, non Football pish they continue to sing despite the best wishes of the Club, wee williams trying to be ‘Ultra’ well done the wee williams. You have made a name for yer selves, well done the wee Williams.

  7. MWD – hehe. Trumped works better.

The more that our support is castigated the less likely the rebel songs will disappear.

We are from a family of fighters and have come to relish resistance.

The most certain way to banish rebel songs from Parkhead is to see equality and fairness within the game and society at large.

I honestly don’t sing the rebs at games, never have. But I can see that this concerted attack on our support will result in rebellious results rather that meek compliance.

It was ever thus. It is in our genes.

Having said that, you do have to wonder whether our enemies know what they are doing and which buttons to press.

    Bluff, or double bluff?

‘The latest information from the Scottish Government which will be published tomorrow would appear to suggest that the majority of sectarian offences in Scotland happen at a particular football stadium; and that stadium would be Celtic Park.’

Well that’s a bit silly given that the number of arrests at CP is tiny.

  11. Estadio- you are way off the mark with your extreme views about the GB. Without them last season and this would have been a total washout. They have provided the only atmosphere, and at times the only reason to keep watching the game. They have driven the team on to a result when it looked lost- most recently being the Rennes game. I dont agree with the Ra add on- but I dont hear ANY other song that I think shouldnt be sung, and I hear the ra bit from plenty of other parts of the ground- so please- get a bit of perspective

  12. Another reason I havent been posting much…

My faith in my Celtic is waining. I need to see some evidence that those who are directly responsibile for the running of the Club are serving our best interests.

    CQN…….. HELP

  13. It’s the GB today and when they sort them out it will be the rest of us tomorrow.

Stop griping about which songs are allowed, the fact is they do not want to hear us at all. The bigots are going belly up and they are furious, that is why the offensive bill was dreamt up. It came in the aftermath of the billy boys being sorted out by UEFA for their sectarian singing. We do not have and never did have any sectarian baggage so a new law was needed to sort out the fenian hordes.

We should be taking as much legal help as we can to fight this dictatorial SNP government.

Finally for all you Celtic supporting SNP voters out there, you were warned by your fathers and grand-fathers not to dabble in

independence. Let what is happening to our club be a lesson to you.

    Re the songs debate .

IMO we are witnessing the backlash of UEFA sanctioning and branding the Ragers fans sectarian bigots .

The fact that the SFA have never felt the need to do so should not be lost either .

We were getting plaudits from UEFA and even AWARDS (the first ever given to FOOTBALL FANS I believe )and they couldn’t have that could they ,if they were not going to be able to carry on their bigotry and bile in their best tradition then the (we are different sides of the same coin) argument was in danger of being blown out of the water .

So what happened since their ban for bile and bigotry ,

We have seen the poppy given greater prominence in Scotish fooball

We have see more British soldiers paraded at football

We have seen celebrate Britain days at football

We have seen microphones placed outside away grounds before a minutes silence

Coincidence ,well I will leave that up to each individual to decide .

I said on here when they were forced to stop their bile and bigotry (don’t laugh at the back )that they would be coming for us and here they come .

They played the only card they could BRITISHNESS and the BRITISH ARMY and some of our fans ,correction it seems one 17yr old sang illicit songs and before you know it ,Celtic fans are all IRA supporters in the eyes of Europe .

Now I do not sing about the IRA at games and I hope the guys that do decide to drop the add ons .

but surely any neutral looking into the goings on in Scotland in the past 2yrs or so would conclude that there is something sinister going on .

As soon as UEFA found them guilty and banned them were the SFA frightened or even warned that they would have to act in their domestic capacity ,who knows ,but they knew they could not get us on sectarian/bigotry chanting so up pops illicit/offensive chanting (not even law yet )and low and behold we are the 1st and only ones brought up for it twice in one week and both HOME games .IMO they can dress that up anyway they want but I for one am not fooled .

I Agree that there is a desperate attempt to push through this stupid and embarrassing legislation at all costs and we have to be shown to be as bad as them ,no need to tar them the evidence is already there .

There is a bloody good book to be written about all this some time in the future ,so I hope someone is keeping notes .

    hail hail

Songs about hats / machine guns / plough boys …

I stopped singing these in the late 70’s.

    Couple of cameo performances since.

Never forget the company of a lot of boys from the 26 Counties when I was an egg chaser for one of the WoS’s more working class tertiary education establishments.

Sing song of the bus coming back from Dundee …

I seemed to know more “Republican ballads” than the Irish guys, strange.

We had one Hun actually “Bluenose” in the team who was well the worse for wear so I had to help out with his repartee.

Started out the “Sash my Father wore”, and then rapidly became the “Gash my mother bore”

And the cry was no contractions …

Finally for any KDS’rs on here.

I have found out the identity of the ship the TFOD were pushing in the flyers for their “Armed Forces Day / Commando Comic” fest.

WW1 era ship that I think was claimed as a battleship.

The missus is Parisienne and one of my best pals is a psg man from Paris. He has explained the situation to me. Even explained how people of a non white appearance are first advised by stewards to go to the opposite end of the stadium and then escorted by police if they ignore this advice.

As for drinking in the home counties recently. I’ve been to Kent, surrey, east Sussex and Berkshire within the last few months and the only issue I’ve had is being a sweaty sock as they say. I’ve never been welcomed with open arms anywhere down there but not as a result of being a Celtic man.
