Oh Charlie (swept aside) Green, you’ve got Celtic wrong!

1150

Sevco owner, Charles Green, got himself a bit confused last night when talking about Celtic, saying, “Our main rivals, or our former main rivals, across the city, they have had three different companies in their lifespan.  In fact if you look at their corporate structure now it’s more complicated than Rangers”.

For the record……..

Celtic were formed in 1888.  The officeholders of the club accepted personal liability for all debts until the club became a limited company on 12 April 1897.  On that day registration number SC003487 was given to The Celtic Football and Athletic Company Limited – a private limited company.

In 1994 Fergus McCann opened the club up to 10,000 supporters by making the club a public limited company, which then became known as Celtic PLC.  It is the same company, with the same registration number, SC003487.  On the same day the company became a PLC, Fergus, in his wisdom, registered a new company, with exactly the same name as the old company (The Celtic Football and Athletic Company Limited), in order to prevent another party registering the name, which retains an historical association with Celtic.  The new company is wholly owned by Celtic PLC.

Celtic now have in the region of 29,000 shareholders.  They, alongside every shareholder in our 125 year history, have made sure that every debt was settled.  Go to Companies House web site, click ‘Find Company Information’, search ‘CelticPLC’, for 115 unbroken years of limited liability history.

Swept aside

Green’s problems, of course, are not that people don’t understand Celtic’s corporate structure, they are that last month he told a BBC TV camera that if Rangers were liquidated “the history, the tradition, everything that’s great about this club is swept aside”.  Even he must suspect that he is not the best guy to lead his new club forward.

On the alleged illegal registration of players issue, Green was more contrite: “HMRC has still to reach a decision or announce their decision. I understand the SPL has put a panel together to look at this issue and we will contest it every inch of the way.  The view of the club, the fans and indeed newcomers like myself is that those titles and those games were won fairly and belong to this (sic) club.  We will fight it to the finish.”

At last we can agree.  If Rangers won trophies fairly they must (and will) retain them.  Speaking to Sky News in March Sir David Murray could not have been clearer that no Rangers players had dual contracts while his board was in charge.  If this is the case, Rangers have no case to answer.

However, if the old Lumley-troubler’s memory of this issue has failed him, then matters will take a different course.  If Sevco inherit Rangers SFA membership, they will be looking at many years of penalties to compensate for their decade or more of illegal player registration.

As far as HMRC are concerned, no. Sevco won’t be liable for the debt.

Sevco have agreed to accept any punishment the SFA/SPL will deliver regarding the double contracts. I can’t see how that will work. Stripping oldco/oldclub of titles has nothing to do with newco/newclub, and in any case isn’t a punishment, just a correction of the record books. The only punishment that would be appropriate and proportionate would be suspension or exclusion, and that’s not going to happen.

  3. For anyone who missed this excellent post from last night……… enjoy.

In which I look at the joint SFA/SFL/SPL/Sevco statement.

Who owns Rangers Football Club right now? Not Sevco Scotland according to the statement.

Plus why Brechin have three chances to defeat Rangers FC, one on the pitch and two off it.

Why it seems to me that the SFA have granted Sevco Scotland Ltd a membership which does not exist and why possibly there are simply no players of Rangers FC registered to play tomorrow.

    Bella Figura .

I’ve been living here for 12 years but the Bella Figura thing never ceases to amaze.

    For example — yesterday .

Walking up the wooden ramp from the beach to a beach bar . 3 women in microkinis and flip flops walking in front of me . At the top of the ramp , each proceeded to stop , fish in their designer beach bags , remove high heeled sandals and replace flip flops with said high heeled sandals . That done they checked [ and adjusted if necessary ] that the view from the rear would have an impact and positively wiggled into the bar —–..

The ramp was narrow , I had to wait . Some queues are better than others.

  9. I get the feeling that the importance of the tax tribunal decision will not be so much the decision itself (which as far as the huns are concerned is academic, as they will be liquidated by then, though the bit relating to MIH will be interesting) but rather the detailed exposition of the arrogant, brazen and blatant disregard for the law and all forms of authority shown by the board of directors.

In that regard it could be reminiscent of Sheriff J. Irvine Smith’s decision in the case brought by the widow of one of the victims of the Ibrox disaster.

There’s a continuing thread of triumphalism and supremacy attached to the huns and recent events show no sign of it dissipating.

Aye you are right, the stripping of titles are not a punishment.

They have won, they will not be punished for their cheating, the damage has been done to all of scottish football.

The powers will do everything they can to facilitate their swift return to the top league, and there is nothing that the other clubs will do to stop it, it’s all about the money.

    The game is a bogey.

I agree with that, and this is simply a gesture so as Sevco can use the old badge and pretend they are the same club. I reckon HMRC will be keeping a beady eye on these developments.

Accepting responsibility over double contracts could be a minefield for Sevco though in terms of financial ramifications.

Say for example Celtic, Hearts and Dundee United take umbrage for missing out on possible Champions League revenue and European clubs seek compensation for monies lost in tournaments. Things potentially could get very messy for Sevco. They can hardly claim it is nothing to do with them when they have accepted responsibility.

  20. From Video Celts

Alejanddro Bedoya is the latest Rangers player to turn his back on Sevco.

The 25-year-old joined Rangers from Orebro and is believed to be returning to Sweden to join Helsingborgs.

Bedoya started five SPL games last season but returned to Murray Park to take part in pre-season training.

Ten of last season’s Rangers first team squad refused to TUPE their registration over to Sevco leaving Ally McCoist to complain about the size of the squad he had to work with in pre-season training.

Carlos Bocanegra, Dorin Goian and Maurice Edu have all been back to Murray Park but are unlikely to play for Sevco since it could jeopardise their chances of a move during the transfer window.

Should any of those players transfer their contract to Sevco it would put a strain on the club budget that already has Lee McCulloch, Lee Wallace, Neil Alexander and Kirk Broadfoot collecting large salaries as well as the three year commitment to Ian Black.

Today’s team line up at Brechin will give the most accurate reflection on the status of Sevco who have been granted conditional membership of the SFA- a term that doesn’t exist in their own Articles of Association.

Rangers still retain SFA membership as members of the SPL with their share expected to be transferred to Dundee this week.

Clubs competing in the Ramsdens Cup are allowed to field two trialists but it’s unknown which players have been able to register with Sevco since they weren’t given clearance by the SFA until Friday night.

Orebro have still to receive the full transfer fee for Bedoya who joined Rangers in a deal reported to be valued at £300,00.
