One man’s cloud

1060

Adam Matthews has been on top form this season, his pace and partnership with Mikael Lustig have been unfailing for Celtic, so Neil Lennon will clearly feel robbed at a top players injury-enforced absence for three months.

It could be worse.

An injury to Forster, Ambrose, van Dijk or Izaguirre would be difficult to accommodate but we are not short of right side-midfield options.  James Forrest is now back from injury and although Derk Boerrigter joined as a left-sided player, he has already featured on the right for Celtic.  If Boerrigter plays on the left Samaras, Commons and Stokes can all feature on the right.

One man’s cloud is another’s silver lining, just ask Beram Kayal, who kept Victor Wanyama on the bench until he was injured in December 2011.  Victor got the run in the team he needed and never looked back.

Signing van Dijk was a response to an unexpected transfer request/not in the right frame of mind to pull a jersey on statement from Kelvin Wilson, but the major planned summer activity was to inject pace into the team for Champions League games, specifically through Boerrigter and Pukki.  For various reasons we’re not there yet, maybe Ajax at home later this month will change that.

Blown away by the 1254125 donations, which have flooded in since Friday. Each donor, from those who donated £5 to the several who gave £125 (like it!) are a credit to the spirit of those whose footsteps you walk in.  Promise to stop pestering with a link to the page.  Soon.

Thank you.

As long as the cable is OK you should just use the AV button on the remote to select the Ext1 or Ext2 (think that is what they are called) and press Play.

I only included those names to get people thinking, and I can’t fathom why but when you mentioned Blinker, I immediately thought of Nacho Novo, what a sleekit little creep he was. He’s well into their ‘Hall of Shame’. We’ve never had a player of those genes.

  3. Braw tale from Scottishleaf…spent a few years in the “Toon”…amazing place …drank at the Corner hoose …as it was near the flat …first pub to turnover a Million a year..(ca 1985) but you couldn,t say you “pulled” tottie there …you judged it and then picked it up… braw …flat mate Phil wis a Maccam …couldn,t open his moo anywhere in the toon …hahahhappy days …The Bear was managing the toon at the time …he didnae like it though …some strange folk doon that way…hahahaha but we had some braw braw times …

  4. Remember a Wednesday night game at Ibrox, when John Grieg broke Bobby Lennox’s leg

in a “challenge” and the subsequent DR story where the Celtic completely, exonerated the Rangers player.

I worked in Swindon a couple of years ago and went to Celtic Pub for games, but usually went to old town for a drink

  6. I was in the Nike megastore at Oxford Street Circus yesterday.

Looking along the full range of strips on show, The Hoops really stand out.

Then behind the counter a member of staff was resplendent in The Hoops.

He told me that he was Greek , that his club Panathanikos , shared the green and white , plus a Shamrock.

I told him ours was a four leaf clover, but we also share a love of the Shamrock.

He told me that he loved Sammy , that he was awesome against Barca, and that all of Greece were talking about his performance.

For me he is frustrating , murder , then unplayable.

He is worthy of a new contract .

When Broony was sent off he went up another gear.

Slide tackling and running his heart out.

I enjoyed that almost as much as his goals at Killie.

  7. Davie Cattenach, who played very few games for the first team in the ’60s and early 70s, had a bit of a reputation as a ‘commited tackler’.

He once ‘sorted out’ Alex McDonald (dirty bassa) in, I think, a Glasgow Cup Final.

He tackled him at neck level, and McDonald was carted off on a stretcher.

During the half-time interval big Jock, apparently, gave him pelters but Sean Fallon pulled him to one side and told him … – “Catt, that was one of the finest tackles I have ever seen!”

Cattenach, incidentally, was one of Davie Hay’s best pals.

Had many a good night in the Tyneside Irish Centre as well over the years as well.

Love Newcastle as a city, great night out and the people are great too but have never particularly cared for the football team.

Was staying in Newcastle for work recently at the Sandman Signature and my window view was of the Sports Direct arena or whatever they call St James Park these days. On the wall were pictures of the stadium and Saint Alan! Luckily I wasn’t in the room that much!!

    SCOTTISHLEAF

Enjoyed your tales today. Great stuff and took me back.

I stayed in East Boldon in the mid 80s for a while. To be honest,I watched Newcastle as Beardsley played for them.

Only went to Roker Park-not the ground-when planning a wee trip along the Marsden Cliffs wi my lass.

Finest people I have ever met are from my time there.

But they had the effin cheek to say they couldnae understand me!

  12. In fact I should mention the kindness shown to me by a complete stranger in Newcastle one Saturday night.

I’d been up on the Sunderland bus for the Celtic home, details of who we played are fuzzy for reasons that will become clear!

Anyway had a fair amount of drink on the way down the road and the bus stopped at the Irish Centre for a few jars. Anyway I ended up pretty drunk and decided to stay in Newcastle when the rest of the guys got on the bus and headed over the river.

Somehow I managed to spend all my money and being a skint student was all out of options as the Irish Centre was closed and I was on my own! So I reversed the charges and called my dad at 3 o’clock in the morning and explained my predicament (in truth I was drunkenly crying down the phone), his response will stay with me till my dying day, he said “Scott you daft bugger, what do you expect me to do, it’s 3 in the morning and I am in bed in Somerset” Anyway he suggested I start walking and to call him I the morning when I had sobered up and was at home.

So I got off the phone and a women had overheard my side of the conversation and I will always be grateful to her as she handed me a twenty pound note and put me in a taxi back to Sunderland. I was never able to repay this kindness but part of me hopes she got her reward for this kindness from something or someone else!

As I say, I love Newcastle and love the people!

  13. Scottishleaf……I was never at a game on St James ,s…..as the Bingo Club on Condercum road was busy busy ….and my good self had to entertain the Ladies….mugging old people en masse ….but the toon was good to me …even had a wee China Town ….and the infamous “Stage Door”….braw

For shame – if you were in East Boldon you should have been a mackem ;-)

Ah Marsden Cliffs/Grotto – one of my favourite spots as a kid, spent many a summers day on the beach there. Visited it last year with my wife and son and went down to the beach, the rock has partially collapsed but they had replaced all the stairs down the Cliffside. Have a great picture of me and Conor on the beach!

  15. Scott that was probably one my old dears …how she managed to get oot ma club with a 20 poond note though ….dodgy customer…

  16. Roker Park: scene of one of Yogi’s finest games. I think we hammered them 4-1 in a preseason friendly. On the railway platform after the game, got Jock Stein and Charlie Tully’s autgraphs.

No, back up the road. I worked there for about 15 months and had a flat there. Flew back and forwards from Bristol most weeks but my wife and weans came down a few times. I lnow the town is a bit of a mess but I liked it and it was handy for travelling from. I went to the Oak most nights and the Tap for games. Most folk were very friendly but you did see hun tops regularly. The worst snow I have ever seen was in Swindon and I couldn’t even get the car put the driveway or the street I lived in. Got my DR daily in shop in the old town and the lady owner loved Andy Murray. Good memories: and that mad roundabout!

  19. Loved Davy Hay, remember him scoring a screamer from 25 yds against the Huns in a Scottish Cup game, 3-1 to the good guys, in the Jungle that day, magic.

My first memory of Davy hay was a pre season (i think) friendly against Leeds Utd.

A Leeds player launched himself into the young Celt and he seemed to just bounce off him.
