Passing greats, breath-taking negative news placement

912

If you haven’t had a chance to listen to the podcast I did with the LostBhoys on Celtic in the 1950s (superb production quality, you should check out what they are doing), I took the opportunity to mention the Hibs team of the late forties and early fifties, including the celebrated Famous Five forwards.

They won three league titles and narrowly missed out on another two as they unequivocally dominated Scottish football.  They were probably the best team in Europe at that stage, only the lack of a formal European competition denied them recognition.  Celtic battened down the hatches against Hibs in the 1953 Coronation Cup final but nothing would be the same again for the Edinburgh club, although reputation got them an invitation to the inaugural European Cup, in which they reached the semi-final in 1956.

We learned today that the last surviving member of the Famous Five, Lawrie Reilly, died, aged 84.  Their achievement should be suitably acknowledged (this is not an endorsement of Willie Ormond’s later work, obviously).

The news that Hibs have today bid £200k for a striker is significant.  £200k doesn’t buy you much in English football but it is a substantial investment for any club, apart from Celtic.  Maybe Hibs long period in the wilderness is coming to an end.

I only caught up today on the Scottish Sun’s online coverage of the arson attack in Salsburgh (alas, not unique in the bus industry), complete with photographs of Celtic supporters and Neil Lennon (all of whom were four hundred miles from the incident).  I remember reading a story on rape, robbery and assault in London in The Sun back in the 80s, accompanied by inner-city photos featuring exclusively Afro-Caribbean-Londoners going about their business.  Real subtle.

Remember the email Charlotte Fakes produced on negative news stories against ‘other’ clubs being planted?  Utterly breath-taking.  Scottish football, as it was, and for some, still is, is inherently an unstable influence on Scottish society.  We need to take our business elsewhere and I don’t believe any of our top-flight colleagues would object.

The amount of money being wasted by the Focus BS isquite staggering

Unfortunately the First Minister and Chief Constable are too conceited to accept that it’s a waste of time

Add in the craven Crown Office …and …we’ll have to endure this nonsense for some time yet

  2. Anyway we ain’t going to play in England. Why should we replace an English team?

How long ago was that game ??

I’ve been to countless games in England which all passed without any hassle from the opposition support

Why don’t we just give the Wanyama money to Blatter and tell him to make it happen? If you can get a World Cup in Qatar…..

  5. It was 98 I think P. Of course I do not doubt you but the English media and public would rightly be demanding an end to certain chants.

  6. Jackie Mac – depends what you are in to. I’m reading a Gary Leech book called FARC (about the Colombian Guerrillas) which is very good. Also read Jimmy Burns book ‘Roja’ which is basically a history of Spanish football and a look at the many political connections there-in. (He wrote ‘Barca’ and a great book on Diego Maradonna too)

I’m not really big in to fiction but I am going to start on a few classics this summer – ones I should have read when I was younger!

Also want to read ‘The Open Veins of Latin America’ – a classic history of that continent. Been meaning to read that for years……

    Hmmmmmmmmmmmm

    Interesting

    Thank you for that

Insurance job written all over it and with the big blue bus kept there the good old Celtic support will get the blame HH

    =====================================

The big fuss made over the bus when it was given to Sevco and now the burning of said bus. Like a lot of things Sevco – it don’t add up. I wonder s said bus was a bit of a rust bucket underneath it’s shiny sevco paint job? Maybe it wouldn’t see out the season. Maybe……

The shop you should be looking for is the Good Spirit Company situated on Bath St in the premises previously occupied by 23rd Precint Records about 100 yards on the left from Buchanan sTree Precint .there is also Spirited Wines in Sachiehall Street near to. Douglas Street. however Marks and Spencer’s wine range is probably just as good as anything aforementioned shops supply particular their Barbera Di Asti

CFC will generate more revenue than the bulk of EPL clubs

However the submission is concise and the examples given pertinent

  13. Canamalar1 Your shout mate, just felt last paragraph was a little threatening for want of a better expression. To make this sound better if you still want to use the word fail, it could as follows read:

If the Board fail to back this resolution, in line with your requirements would request a written explanation within 1 month of the date of the AGM, justifying their reticence and explaining why there was no financial impact to our club or license issuance irregularities if that is their contention.

    Good luck:)

  14. Masty I remember a seedy bar which had strippers: horrible. I remember also losing all my money before the game. The game itself? Waste of time.

P, we will not generate more money as we will not be playing in England.

  15. On the Rankers coach thing

I was under the impression that the coach belonged to the Bruce’s and was only loaned or leased to rankers for nowt or nominal fee as he is a hun sypathiser

and any insurance claim should go to the Bruce’s

    Could be wrong though

  16. I should state that the strippers and loss of money were not connected. I also remember BNP stickers on buildings. Not fond of Newcastle.

As for names, I’m a fan of little Prince Dodi…

  18. John Oneil

My answer re revenue generation was not related to CFC generating money for themselves but for the league

Clearly the personal interests of CFC will be of no concern of any other club in the EPL

In any event …I’m not convinced we’d be as great a success in the EPL as some think

  20. Pfayr, I tend to agree that we might find the competition too tough at the top but we could succeed at some point. EPL doesn’t need Celtic to generate money. I take no pleasure in saying what I do but the facts are clear.

  21. mickbhoy1888.

Thanks for that. I’ll try the one in Bath Street, then head down to Oddbins behind the Celtic Shop in Argyll Street.

  22. Marrakesh Express on

I think the dynamics of modern football (mainly media driven) will eventually see us play in another league.

Too many huge clubs are being barred from the gravy train and we are one, along with the likes of Ajax and Benfica. In my opinion it will be some form of European Superleague but I wouldnt rule out England. Ukraine and Russia are joining up, Holland and Belgium next?

Who would have thought 20 years ago that an out of contract unknown Belgian would change football employment laws or that the EPL would be so rich that Cardiff and Soton were bidding for our best player? Things change.

I agree our away support would definitely need to ditch the ra stuff if it did come about, we’d still be more welcome than another group of fans who have left a trail of destruction in England, and who’ll never be tamed.
