Pitfalls with Malmo and Vidi but AEK remain major hurdle

468

The incentive for Brendan Rodgers and his players is clear, beat AEK Athens and you will face either Malmo or Vidi (known as Videoton until earlier this year) in the Champions League play-off round.

Malmo, who are 16 games into their league programme, will be slight favourites to make the play-off round.  They beat Romanians Cluj in the last round and Kosovans Drita in the first qualifier.

The Swedes were eliminated from the second qualifying round last year by Vardar of Macedona – a stage which did not offer the compensation of a Europa League entry.

Vidi recorded the result of the last round by eliminating Ludogorets Razgrad 1-0 on aggregate.  They overcame Maltese and Estonian opposition a year ago, before recording a remarkable away goals victory over Girondins Bordeaux.  Eventually losing 4-0 on aggregate to Partizan Belgrade.

It all went wrong for Celtic three years ago when former player, Jo Inge Berget returned to haunt us for Malmo.  Berget scored twice in the Champions League play-off first leg at Celtic Park in a 3-2 Celtic win, but the Swedes progressed after winning the return 2-0.

Malmo changed manager in June, appointing Uwe Rosler, who was sacked by Fleetwood Town in February,  Not a conventional route to Champions League glory.

There are pitfalls if we approach the tie as ill-prepared as we were in 2015, or as Bordeaux were last month, but AEK are by far the strongest team we will face in order to reach the group stage.

It’s all about Celtic Park on Wednesday; the hugest or hugest games.

Aek’s Captain has been out for 10 months and was just coming back so hes not really a loss. If Boye starts now its far from a loss they will be stronger,,,he’s very good and will now start up front with their star striker Livaja.

Boye just came on loan from Torino,,is nicknamed the bull and heres a video of his skills. I actually like the look of both their forwards and am very curious to see how they perform. Both seem like our type of player and are around our budget. These two strikers will really be a handful. I expect them to hit the net at least once.

You’ve done your research and I accept what you say. Let’s hope our mids and defenders are on their game. If we don’t concede at CP, we have a chance. This will be a tough tie, I’m sure. HH

    DD,

The ole shrooms get a bad name, and should be at least legalised for medicinal purposes for any poor bugger who has had to deal with serious depression.

Might not be a popular view here, but have an open mind and do some research – and compare it against results from some of the anti-depressives prescribed currently.

I did, mate. Admittedly, they’re playing silly buggers with a heavily subsidised internal fuel price and a worthless local currency, but strictly speaking,it is correct.

Re depression, never tried hallucinogenics as a palliative, respite or cure. I must have tried just about everything else though! Over the years,I’ve managed to self-police mine.

Aye, that was a blast. There’s been so many other “events” here as well. I’ve generally just wandered about doing my own thing, talkin to those who are happy to talk, and givin some space to those that dont. Ye know, just bein the gormless eejit.

You get the odd spanner, but in the main its re-affirmed that people are mostly good, wherever theyre from.

Anyway, thats the sun about to come up… need to get the togs off, dance round the pool, and light a wee bonfire… the hotel guards wont catch me this time

  8. Good Luck to all the youngsters receiving exam results today. Big day in so many young live’s, but in the bigger scheme of things, just another step along the road. ?

  9. Good morning CQN from a damp Garngad

Good luck to any kids and parents who are waiting in exam results.

It is a very trying and nervous time for you all, but please remember that if all does not go your way, it is not the end of the world (although it might seem like that just now).

There are loads of people who left school with very little qualifications and have went on to have a good life.

    So again good luck ???

If Paddy signs on for another year,at 42 months,he’ll have lasted longer than many “permanent” signings.

I very much doubt that many Celtic supporters would disagree with you-my personal priority would be the defence-but,aye,Paddy can get a piece at my door anytime.

I was there in January. Beautiful city.

Found a smashing bar, a block behind the Hard Rock Cafe, and a quarter of the price for drink. A cross section of locals drank there and were very friendly towards Celtic fans. They knew all about 1967.

Very true. While it is natural to give plaudits for exam success, we should equally support and encourage those who do not academically achieve what they desired .

You rightfully point out that failing to achieve desired results is no barrier to success.

  17. For any kids, parent, grandparents or carers that exam results don’t go the way you had hoped.

Please encourage the young person to contact the exam helpline, who can advise on career paths and give you contact details for organisations in your local area who can help with career choices.

In the North of Glasgow there are several very good organisations that will help, I have worked with them and indeed a lot of the local youngsters have attained apprenticeships etc.

Ones that do The Godfather2 , and ofcourse our second treble last year could be argued to be better, however back to my main point, I think that the original KevJ was a lot better than awe they sequels that are floating about now.

Reading back quickly this morning saw HebCelt’s comment:

Thought Michael Stewart conducted himself very well tonight on Shortbread when Kenny Macintyre tried to “ambush” him with the Charlie Adams on the line thing. You could tell he was furious with the sneakiness of it all, there will be pay back for that I reckon worth a listen on the BBC iplayer. Just how thick is C Adam??? H H Hebcelt

I listened to this in the car last night as I was driving home. If you have time and can, it really is worth a listen.

Michael Stewart had apparently rubbished comments from Adams at the weekend, so they got Adams on the phone and had them cinfront each other. Michael was obviously raging with them all…..and proceeded to savage Adams who as a result came across as a complete buffoon. Some of Michael’s comments were as refreshing I’ve heard for a long time.

No desire to defend Pres. Maduro at all and teh country’s economy is under siege and basically done.

You wonder when there is so much to legitimately criticise about the country, why so many right wing sources these days are so happy to go with populist easily-disproved lies? Seems it works quite easily when fact-checking news outlets can be fobbed off as “fake news” and fantasists like Fox News are cheerleaders rather than newsmen.

I checked their story against an online currency converter. Bolivar to pound = .0000037. That puts a pound worth 2.7m Bolivars. At $1.3/£1 that’s 3.5m Bolivars.

A litre of petrol in Venezuela is subsidised, and sold at 1 Bolivar.

Their currency is worthless, and the article plays on that. But it is strictly speaking accurate.

More to the point,we shouldn’t be point-scoring,the Mail shouldn’t be scoring cheap points,we should be grateful for not being Venezuelan, and giving huge kudos to Colombia-hardly the world’s richest country-for their humanitarian efforts.
